It&rsquo;s a dark day for those sports lovers especially if you&rsquo;re Singaporean as their first Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling has now been suspended from competition after he had admitted to consuming cannabis in Vietnam back in May.

The 27-year-old became Singapore&rsquo;s local sporting hero as well as an eye candy to many after his victory at the 2016 Rio Games where he bagged the first gold medal for Singapore. It was also noted that his father had passed away last year and Schooling was facing immense pressure as an athlete.
Netizens had expressed sympathy for him and some wrote that every young person tends to make mistakes. Some people even highlighted that this shouldn&rsquo;t be much of an issue as many have tried it overseas.
Unacceptable circumstances for an athlete

Despite netizens siding him, as an athlete, it&rsquo;s totally unacceptable as athletes should be seen as a role model to many.
Singapore has banned the consumption of drugs. This ban includes those who consume the drug within the country and abroad. Citizens or permanent residents who fail their urine test for illegal drug can face up to 10 years imprisonment or a S$20,000 (~RM64,003) fine.
There is also a mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking which is now the more increasingly controversial sentence among Singaporeans and many as they speak up against the punishment. Earlier this year, a <a href="https://myc.my/articles/1222/death-sentence-carried-out-on-nagaenthran-in-singapore-condolences-to-his-family">Malaysian was sentenced to death</a> due to the penalty but another man was seemingly spared due to the protest of the whole ordeal.
Schooling was not the only athlete who was involved in the consumption of the drug as national swimmer Amanda Lim (29) had also admitted to consuming cannabis abroad and she too was given a warning by the Central narcotics Bureau after an investigation.
Swimmers issue an apology

Shorty after a statement was given by Singapore&rsquo;s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and SportsSG, both Schooling and Lim had issued an apology.

Schooling admitted that he&rsquo;s demonstrated bad judgement and said it was a moment of weakness for him as he was going through a tough period in his life.
Lim also said she was &ldquo;deeply sorry for her actions and there&rsquo;s no excuses for it&rdquo;.
The Ministry of Defence had stated the Schooling did pass his urine test but confessed to his actions while he was on break from his military service as he was training to participate and Southeast Asia Games in Hanoi in May.
Appropriate action to be taken
Both athletes have owned up to their mistake and that the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) and the Singapore national Olympics Council (SNOC) will be reviewing appropriate actions on their part.

Minister of Youth for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, had shared his thoughts on the incident. He does indeed agree that it&rsquo;s a serious error of judgements and it&rsquo;s not to be taken lightly.
&ldquo;Facing up to their efforts is the first step to a proper rehabilitation&rdquo;&rdquo; said Tong.
He also acknowledges the sacrifices the two had made for the national team and he urges the public to give the two empathy and understanding to go through this difficult situation.

What now for the two swimmers?

As there is a protocol currently in place, Schooling will be placed on a supervised urine test regime for a duration of six months. He will also no longer be eligible for leave or disruption to to train while he is serving his National Service as it had been previously delayed multiple times due to him competing.
As for Lim, she recently appeared in a campaign for Pokka and the company says that the partnership has completed. &nbsp;They had also expressed for Lim to bounce back after this issue and they also highlighted that they don&rsquo;t condone the usage of banned substances. It is likely she&rsquo;ll be having the same faith as Schooling for now.
Sad to see some of the top athletes facing these kinds of issues but rules are rules, as an athlete, they should all understand the consequences of drugs and things like this should never be taken lightly.

According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.

Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

In his statement, Fadhil invoked the legacy of Anwar Ibrahim himself &mdash; who, as a student leader in the 1970s, led similar acts of protest. He pointed to Anwar&rsquo;s involvement in burning a copy of 13 Mei, a book by Malaysia&rsquo;s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, during a student demonstration over perceived injustices.
&ldquo;We were inspired by Anwar&rsquo;s own activism. Just as he once burned a book he believed undermined the truth, we burned his caricature to highlight betrayal and hypocrisy,&rdquo; Fadhil wrote. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think Anwar, upon seeing the video, would be reminded of who he once was.&rdquo;
He also added that the outrage from Anwar's loyalists &mdash; including youth groups such as ABIM and AMK &mdash; missed the point, as they were more concerned with optics and reverence than the actual issues being raised.
UMS: Burning Was &lsquo;Immature and Uncivilised&rsquo;

UMS, however, has firmly condemned the act. Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor described the incident as &ldquo;uncivilised, immature, and unreflective of the intellectual standards expected of university students.&rdquo;
He confirmed that 13 students had been identified as participants in the protest, and two were directly involved in burning the caricature. The university indicated that disciplinary proceedings were being considered under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). A committee of academics would be established to review the matter and determine appropriate action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
Despite the criticism, the protest&rsquo;s central message appears to have struck a chord with many Malaysians disillusioned by the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts, particularly in East Malaysia.

Datin Vivy Sofinas Yusof and her husband, Datuk Fadzarudin Shah Anuar &mdash; co-founders of the once-celebrated fashion and e-commerce brands FashionValet and dUCk &mdash; are set to stand trial in 2026 for allegedly misappropriating RM8 million in investment funds. The funds, entrusted to their company by two government-linked investment giants &mdash; Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) &mdash; were meant to support and develop local entrepreneurship.
Instead, the high-profile couple is accused of transferring the RM8 million from FashionValet Sdn Bhd into a separate entity they also owned &mdash; 30 Maple Sdn Bhd &mdash; without obtaining approval from FashionValet&rsquo;s board of directors. The alleged financial misconduct is said to have taken place on 21 August 2018 at Public Bank&rsquo;s Bukit Damansara branch in Kuala Lumpur.
Trial Dates Set for 2026

After months of legal developments, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has now fixed 15 days for the full trial next year. Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad confirmed the following dates:

The next case mention is scheduled for 27 October 2025, allowing the defence team more time to examine forensic reports and prepare their arguments. According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, the prosecution intends to call 26 witnesses to testify over the course of the trial.
Vivy and Fadzarudin, both aged 37, were not present during the recent case management hearing on 23 June 2025, as their legal counsel had secured an exemption from court attendance. The couple continues to be represented by lawyer M. Athimulan.
Pleading Not Guilty to CBT and Alternative Charge

The charges, first read in court on 5 December 2024, fall under Section 409 of the Penal Code, read in conjunction with Section 34, which pertains to criminal breach of trust (CBT) committed by a public servant or an individual in a position of trust. If found guilty, they face between two and 20 years&rsquo; imprisonment, whipping, and a fine.
Additionally, the couple faces an alternative charge under Section 403, also read with Section 34, for dishonestly misappropriating property belonging to the company. This charge carries a lighter penalty &mdash; a prison term ranging from six months to five years, and may also include caning and a fine upon conviction.
Both Vivy and Fadzarudin have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Controversy Surrounding Internal Acquisition

The acquisition was made through the issuance of 851,686 new ordinary shares in FashionValet. According to filings with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), the internal valuation placed the value of the dUCk brand at RM68.8 million, with an additional RM21 million assigned as goodwill.
Although 30 Maple had posted profits of RM8.5 million in 2017 and RM7.7 million in 2018 &mdash; along with a RM10 million dividend payout &mdash; the timing and structure of the RM95 million acquisition deal sparked scepticism.
Critics argue that the founders effectively channelled public investment funds back into their personal company, raising ethical concerns over whether such internal transactions should have received greater scrutiny, especially given the involvement of taxpayer-linked capital.
From Digital Darlings to Legal Defendants
