Everybody knows that plastic can be found everywhere, especially in the ocean. In fact, plastic was also found in the Mariana Trench which is the deepst part of the ocean. Scientists also revealed that the micro and nano plastics were found in every human tissue they sampled! But how many of us are actually thinking of ways to solve them?
It is understandable as we see the solutions are pretty far-fetched. But we never know until we try, just like these students from APU, who are determined to address the global issue of plastic pollution.

They called themselves Techgasus, starring an Industrial Design degree student Mostafa Marzouk and four Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering students called Chan Jing Hung, Lim Cher Khai, Lim Joon Yi and Tan Jia-Hao.&nbsp;
They invented &lsquo;<a href="https://www.jamesdysonaward.org/en-MY/2022/project/whalecro/">Whalecro</a>&rsquo;, an underwater propulsion vehicle with an all-new micro debris filtering system. Chan Jing Hung explained that they were inspired by the filtered feeding system of the whale shark.&nbsp;

&lsquo;Whalecro&rsquo; is an underwater propulsion microplastic clean-up vehicle targeted at the eco-tourism market.
&ldquo;We designed a whale-like structure with a filtering system in it that is made up of Velcro straps, a commonly used material with a hook-like surface that can efficiently capture micro debris in the ocean,&rdquo; he added.
To ensure the practicality of the products, they conducted numerous experiments including the test in the beach every time they designed new shapes and details. When they find a perfect shape to use, they start to get them refined and enhanced.
The interdisciplinary concept had surely benefited the team.
Chan said, &ldquo;Mostafa&rsquo;s role as an industrial designer is the cornerstone of our project as he transformed our technical idea into an attractive and visually appealing product without forgoing the ergonomics concept.&rdquo;

They worked it out to understand each other&rsquo;s way of thinking and create valuable takeaways for the projects.&nbsp;
Their mentor, Mr. Eekang Ooi, also pointed out the beauty of this concept:
&ldquo;While the engineering students focused on the technical side, the industrial design student looked into the User Experience (UX), consumer market and transforming intangible ideas aesthetically to attract the end users. The combination of both sides' efforts brings an attractive and fully functional product to the market.&rdquo;

Indeed, interdisciplinary projects need further encouragement so that students can learn to work hand in hand with others from different backgrounds and create more comprehensive projects while learning each other&rsquo;s skills and area of study.
With months of work and determination, team Techgasus won the runner up of Malaysia James Dyson Award 2022 that was held recently.&nbsp;
The tree winning team from the national competition will be sent to compete at James Dyson Award International 2022, next month. Congratulations peeps!
They will be showing how their &lsquo;Whalecro&rsquo; works in the upcoming international area- The vehicle would move forward underwater, which makes the water current flow in the opposite direction and pulls the surrounding micro debris!&nbsp;
Sounds interesting, right?
Ooi, the mentor concluded that &ldquo;in the future, the team could enhance the efficiency of the product by experimenting with different sizes or surface designs of Velcro straps. Furthermore, we would like to raise awareness of ocean pollution through ecotourism [through this invention].&rdquo;&nbsp;

With good intention we can literally create anything! Right?
