For many of us in Malaysia, Petaling Street is known as a very popular landmark in town. It&rsquo;s not only a marketplace but also known as the local Chinatown and is bustling with activities throughout the day and night.
Despite how much culture or heritage the name has as a tourist hotspot in Malaysia, Petaling Street is also known for its growing reputation for selling counterfeit items.
United States Govt Names Petaling Street As A Notorious Counterfeit Goods Market

Recently, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) published the findings of its <a href="https://ustr.gov/sites/default/files/2023-01/2022%20Notorious%20Markets%20List%20(final).pdf">2022 Review of Notorious Markets For Counterfeiting and Piracy (the Notorious Market List)</a>.
It listed 39 online markets, including AliExpress, Shopee and Tabao which are commonly used among Malaysians and many others worldwide. They also listed a total of 33 physical markets consisting of 18 countries which included the likes of China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
USTR shared that the markets listed had reportedly engaged in or facilitated substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy. These markets are well known for selling large volumes of counterfeited items ranging from handbags, wallets, watches, shoes, sunglasses and consumer goods.
&ldquo;Although market activity has not returned to pre-pandemic levels because foreign tourism remains depressed, the majority of goods that are currently available appear to be counterfeit,&rdquo; wrote the report.
Blames Local Authorities Over Slow Response

Aside from listing Petaling Street on their list of Notorious Market Lists, USTR had slammed the local authorities over the lack of enforcement activity without the right holders&rsquo; initiative. They state that even when right holders attempt to initiate enforcement activities, they are difficulties due to local favouritism due to the involvement of organized crime in the market.
Despite what the USTR report claims about local authorities, Malaysia has taken a step towards this issue. Between 2019 and 2022, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) made 1,160 seizures of counterfeit goods which are estimated to be worth RM94.7 million.
The seizure was done across the country with the help of 14,187 inspectors to stamp out the production of fake goods under the Trade Description (Amendment) Act 2019 following complaints from trademark owners.
Those guilty under the Trade Descriptions Act 2019 will face a fine of up to RM15,000 for each fake item on the first charge and RM30,000 for each item on the second charge and so on.

Datuk Ang Say Tee of the Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association also commented on the report stating that it was untrue.
&ldquo;This is an exaggeration and we doubt the relevant authorities have actually conducted research on Petaling Street. Only 10-20% of the hawker stalls on the street are selling counterfeit goods,&rdquo; he said.
The USTR report has been published annually since 2011 and its purpose is to increase awareness and help governments and market operators to prioritize intellectual property enforcement efforts that protect American businesses and their workers.
Despite what the reports claim, our own local authorities in Malaysia do try their level best to combat the issue of counterfeited items. Hopefully one day with their hard work, we can eliminate this issue.

When it comes to the Ramadan season, we all know we&rsquo;ll hear the usual questions from our non-Muslim friends such as:
&ldquo;Bro, how do you stand not eating or drinking all?&rdquo;, &ldquo;Can you drink your saliva?&rdquo; or even &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t know that during fasting month you have prayers every night, is it a must to go?&rdquo;
Yeah, we Muslims probably heard it all but if there&rsquo;s one thing we also have to respect is when our non-Muslim friends attempt to fast with us as they too want to challenge themselves.
Sharing Perspectives Of Fasting
Recently, Malaysian celebrity Daniel Fong and foodie influencer Ceddy Ang took up the challenge to try fasting during the month of Ramadan.

Fong shared that after he returns from his holiday in Japan, he wanted to challenge himself by fasting during the second week of Ramadan. He has never fasted before and this will be his first time attempting it. The experience and joy of fasting for himself have also gained the support of other celebrities such as actress Ruhanines and singer Dr. Soo Winnci.

In fact, Dr Soo herself says that she would fast alongside her Muslim friends every year during Ramadan. Her practice had also inspired many to try doing so as fasting has many health benefits.
&ldquo;My friends have always encouraged me to try fasting. It&rsquo;s a great opportunity for me to learn more about other cultures and religions,&rdquo; he said. In addition, he aspires that his openness to new experiences would motivate and stimulate others to gain knowledge about his religion (Buddhism) as well.

Caddy's Attempt At Fasting

Meanwhile, foodie influencer Ceddy has shared that he&rsquo;s been trying to fast since Day-1 of Ramadan. Before Ramadan started, tweeted that many of his followers asked if he&rsquo;ll attempt to fast again in 2023 and announced that he&rsquo;ll be doing so for 20 days. He even added a cheeky tweet and reminded his followers that he will need to do food reviews, hence why he can&rsquo;t fast all month long.

He later updated at 5 pm on the same day, he did not feel hungry or weak and was left mind blown. He even looked it up at ChatGPT for an explanation behind it.

The outcome of Ceddy&rsquo;s attempts at fasting this Ramadan also sparked a movement among his non-Muslim friends who also gave it a go for themselves!

A month ago, 14-year-old Putri Mumtaz Luthfiya, better known as Piya, went viral after receiving backlash for flaunting an RM1.8K Starbucks Tumbler, which gained over 2.7 million views on TikTok. This time, it looks like she&rsquo;s made headlines again but for a good reason.
The only reason why she managed to purchase the RM1.8K tumbler from Starbucks with her own money is thanks to her business. At the age of 14, she&rsquo;s already a founder of a body-slimming product.
Her product &ldquo;Bebycurf&rdquo; is a &ldquo;coffee sachet&rdquo; which is marketed as a slimming drink and it&rsquo;s been around in the market since 2019. Her mother who&rsquo;s known as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B0kORKCFmse/">Kak Bie</a> has also been promoting it and claims that the product is a weight-reduction drink that works by reducing your appetite and improving the digestive system.
Piya who currently markets the product posted a TikTok video saying that she has lost 30KG by only drinking her weight loss drink without the need for an exercise routine or dieting. As a reward for her weight loss, her mother gifted her a Volkswagen car for her birthday and also promised that she will lose more weight in the future.
Proud Of Her Achievement 
Piya went viral again after paying RM10,000 in business zakat (tithe) to the Kelantan Islamic religious council and is now considered the youngest zakat payer in the state.

According to Bernama, Piya handed the zakat to chief zakat officer Ameer Azeezy Tuan Abdullah while accompanied by her mother Bibi Hasnalinda Zainal Abidin, 46 and her father Mustaman Che Yusof, 60.
Despite only being in Form 2, Piya made her money from the business between September 2022 till now and managed to collect a total sales revenue of RM400,000. She couldn&rsquo;t imagine that she would reach six figures in sales by working on her product. &ldquo;Despite generating that much sales I also did not forget to fulfil this fourth pillar of Islam,&rdquo; said Piya.
Although she has &ldquo;haters&rdquo; she still thanked them for sharing her video and the publicity has helped with her success. With the money earned, she even managed to bring her family to perform Umrah in Mecca with her hard-earned money.
Now that&rsquo;s what you call a hard-working entrepreneur. Let this be motivation to many Malaysians that we can all reach our dreams if we work hard enough or if we may say, smart enough.

During the raid, authorities had foiled the woman&rsquo;s business after they discovered as many as 20 packets of rice with chicken stashed inside a washing machine.

Not only that but there was also a plastic colander that was marinating the chicken inside and was placed next to the washing machine inside the toilet. There were even a bundle of drinks that was stored in a bucket placed in her bedroom.
Secretly Selling The Food To Muslims Who Were Not Fasting
Authorities interrogated the woman and she admitted that she was selling the food and drinks to Muslims who were not fasting. She would directly sell the food from her home to the customers who have contacted her in secret.

&ldquo;We advised her not to sell food and drinks to Muslims who weren&rsquo;t fasting and she promised not to do it again,&rdquo; said Bachok Islamic Religious Office officer Suratemi Mat Yusof. In the end, the woman was issued a warning and would be sent for counselling on her action. As for her &ldquo;customers&rdquo;, by the time the authorities arrived, they had already fled the scene and no arrests were made.
The Bachok District Council had also warned that those who are found guilty during their inspection will be fined up to RM3,000 or jailed.

Let&rsquo;s talk about food and more specifically how we try to satisfy all our craves in the next coming month as it&rsquo;s Ramadan and we all know we can&rsquo;t resist all the irritable food that we see at the bazaar.
Now, going to a Ramadan bazaar is almost like a &ldquo;food fiesta&rdquo; to many and there are endless of options of bazaars all over town. From the crowded streets of the Taman Tun Dr Ismail Bazar to even the crowds at the Stadium Shah Alam bazaar.

But in our opinion despite how much good food they have, the crowds at these two bazaars are too unbearable as many have stalls and waiting for lines up to over 30 minutes long.
Being the true Malaysians we are, we tend to forget how unhealthy our food can be and recently, two food experts said that we will need to be wiser by eating smaller portions and practising restraints. Dietitian Rozanna M. Rosly shares that the fasting month is one of the best months to start adopting good habits that can help benefit our health.
&ldquo;A variety of dishes will be sold, but selecting unhealthy food and overeating would be harmful to your health.&nbsp;Remember, Ramadan is not a food fiesta. Choose your food wisely,&rdquo; she said.
What Foods Should We Avoid?

When fasting, there are quite a few types of food to avoid such as deep-fried, salty and high-sugar foods when breaking fast or even during our pre-dawn meals. Though the food can make us feel full quickly, the consequences will be felt later as it&rsquo;s going to make the fasting hours tough.
Additionally, these foods are also considered high in calories which can increase health risks such as high blood pressure. At least one-third of Malaysian people are currently hypertensive and the figure is worrying as most of our foods fall under this category. &nbsp;Another type of food to avoid is salty food as it can exacerbate thirst which can lead to the craving for soft drinks or even drinks that contain sweetened condensed milk and cordials such as &ldquo;sirap&rdquo; or &ldquo;sirap bandung&rdquo;.

Next up, we need to address breaking fast time. At this hour, we tend to eat a bit more than usual but it&rsquo;s also notable that it is considered the best hour to eat regular serving portions and to consider healthier dessert options such as fruits, a smoothie or even yoghurt. Unlike junk food, these foods are back full of nutrients that can fill the stomach without needing to worry about digestive issues or even weight gain.
Addressing Bazaar Food

Since living in the city can really set us back on time (no thanks to traffic), we typically don&rsquo;t have a choice and need to purchase food at the bazaar. The harsh reality is that bazaar food is certainly not the best choice to take on a daily basis.
&ldquo;For sahur (the pre-dawn meal), it is best to take high-fibre and high-protein food such as wholegrain bread, brown rice, oats, and wraps, with healthy lean protein such as eggs, fish, and chicken cooked with little oil. It is very important to make sure vegetables and fruits are taken to sustain energy longer during the day. It is also important to make sure an adequate amount of water is consumed,&rdquo; said Mushidah Zakiah Mohad Akran who is a senior dietitian.
Everyone&rsquo;s body is different and requires between 1200 to 2000 calories and this too is determined by their activity level, weight and gender. If you&rsquo;re looking to eat heavy for pre-dawn (sahur) meals, then it's best to eat high-fibre and high-protein foods such as brown rice, oats, lean protein such as chicken, fish or eggs or even whole-grain bread.
If you&rsquo;re thinking of losing weight, now is the best time to do so and it also gives us time for our body to reset and adapt to the new cleaner intake of food. But before we do so, we&rsquo;ll need to ensure our bodies are properly hydrated and eating fruits or vegetables during breaking fast can do so.

<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@kinnnn_">@kinnnn</a> had carefully planned out the return of her little brother and wanted to surprise their parents. With that, her little brother had disguised himself as a delivery man with a facemask who was set to deliver a box of cake to their home.
The idea was that the &ldquo;delivery man&rdquo; was sending a cake to the family in conjunction with Ramadan while he was away in New Zealand. He was later invited into the house and handed the cake and the family requested him to help record a thank you wish that was meant to be sent to him.

During the thank you speech, their mother started crying as she couldn&rsquo;t contain her sadness as she really missed him. Before the big reveal, the delivery man was about to take a selfie with the entire family and the sister had asked him to remove his helmet for a better photo.
Little that their parents realise, it was him all along under the helmet and their parents received a heart-warming surprise and burst into tears as soon as they saw who was under the helmet. Throughout the video, the father was fully composed but was later drowned in emotions as they got together for a group hug.

We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of Phase 3 of the Good Virtues Co. #DoGoodChallenge! In the past few months, we have been honoured to collaborate with Good Virtues Co. and with UiTM students by exclusively offering them a platform to present their innovative Do Good ideas, with a chance to win a substantial cash prize of RM30,000.
Our journey took us to UiTM campuses across Malaysia, where we were impressed by the creativity and passion of over 7,000 entries. We faced the challenging task of narrowing down our selections, but we are proud to present the Top-9 teams who had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to our esteemed panel of judges.

Phase 3 of the Good Virtues Co. #DoGoodChallenge was an electrifying event that kicked off with a bang! The teams were given the ultimate challenge of presenting their innovative and creative ideas to an esteemed panel of judges, in a thrilling Shark Tank-style session that lasted over two days.
The energy was palpable as the students took centre stage and showcased their incredible ideas to the table. From heartwarming initiatives to help communities in need, such as the homeless and less fortunate around Pulau Pinang, to innovative strategies to bring about change within their campus communities, we witnessed a truly diverse range of ideas that were nothing short of mind-blowing.
As we watched these brilliant young minds strive to make a positive impact, we couldn't help but feel inspired and hopeful for the future. These ideas have the potential to spark a ripple effect that will touch countless lives and create meaningful change for years to come. We can't wait to see what the future holds for these talented students and their innovative ideas!

As this is a Shark Tank session, you&rsquo;d expect to see some creative presenting skills and the students definitely did not disappoint. One of the most creative presentations we saw had to go to Amjad Aslam from UiTM Permatang Pauh as he had demonstrated his Do Good Idea while giving a haircut to a fellow competitor and friend Muhammad Haziq Rezzuan from UiTM Bertam.

One of the best moments was when it came to the next presentation, the judges were shocked and had a good laugh to see Haziq return looking nice and fresh for his turn.

The excitement was at an all-time high during the intense 2-day Shark Tank session, as the judges listened with rapt attention to the incredible ideas presented by the students. The competition was fierce, and it was evident that every team had put in their all to come up with innovative and impactful solutions.

As the judges had a challenging task at hand, they deliberated over the impressive ideas put forth by the talented participants. With so many great ideas on the table, it was undoubtedly a close battle, and the competition was nothing short of thrilling.
Finally, after much anticipation, the results were in! Out of the many outstanding entries, only the top 5 were selected to proceed to Phase 4 of the challenge. It was a moment of triumph and exhilaration for the finalists, and we couldn't be more excited to see what they have in store for us in the upcoming stages of the Good Virtues Co. #DoGoodChallenge.

Completion Of Phase 3 Of Good Virtues Co. #DoGoodChallenge!

Back on 1 April 2022, the borders between Malaysia and Singapore were finally reopened for fully vaccinated travellers, marking the end of the international travel ban since the pandemic began.
With Singaporeans crossing the border to Malaysia, it saw a slow but steady incline in our economy as things were returning to normal.

But there&rsquo;s a few things that remain the same and that is that Malaysia still has better food and that some Singaporean's attitudes have not changed one bit.
Banned From Refuelling RON95

Recently, a man was caught red-handed as he was filling his Singaporean-registered car with Ron95 in a petrol station in Johor Bahru. The incident was shared on SG Road Vigilante &ndash; SGTV Facebook group and got quite a lot of attention as it quickly gained 123K views and 759 comments at the time of writing this.
The video began with the man saying &ldquo;cannot ah&rdquo; as he places back the yellow RON95 nozzle back into the pump. The woman continued on stating that he cannot do the action he&rsquo;s done while in Malaysia.
This prompted the man to say &ldquo;even though I am Malaysian also cannot, uh?&rdquo;
The woman in the video then explained to the man stating that Singapore-registered vehicles are not allowed to refuel using RON95 petrol while in Malaysia. &ldquo;If you said you are Malaysian, you should know, you cannot fill up the petrol using a Singapore car,&rdquo; she added.
Disobeying The Law Multiple Times

After retrieving his receipt, the man stated that while he was in Kuala Lumpur and Melaka, the petrol stations he went to had allowed him to refuel his vehicle with RON95 with no other objections. He later walked away with no action being able to take upon him.
In fact, this isn&rsquo;t the first time that this has happened as in the past, the public had called out and shamed many Singaporeans for their selfish acts.

As RON95 is heavily subsidised by the Malaysian government to ensure it&rsquo;s the cheapest grade of petrol available for Malaysians as it only costs RM2.05 per litre. The law states that only Malaysian registered vehicles are allowed to fuel up the petrol as the sale of petrol has been prohibited to foreign vehicles since August 2010.

Meanwhile, foreign-registered vehicles are only allowed to refuel with RON97 at RM3.35 per litre, RON100 at RM4.70 per litre or Shel V Power Racing at RM5.50 per litre.
Those guilty of breaking the law are liable to a fine of up to RM1 million or a jail sentence of not more than three years, or both in accordance with the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Petrol station operators meanwhile are liable to a fine of not more than RM2 million.
First Case Of Operator Being Fined

On March 21, a petrol station operator was fined RM40,000 in default of five months in jail after pleading guilty to allowing a Singaporean registered BMW to fill up 54 litres of RON95 at a Petron petrol station at Jalan Tun Abdul Razak on 13 May 2019.
I wonder, when will they ever learn their lesson? For now, I guess it&rsquo;s up to authorities to take action on the video and perhaps we&rsquo;ll finally be seeing a Singaporean get fined for refuelling with RON95.

Recently, netizens on social media have been left in an uproar after videos of officers from the Petaling Jaya City Council had allegedly assaulted a 69-year-old man who tried to protect his dogs from being captured.
The issue was raised by Facebook user <a href="https://www.facebook.com/rekhamorgan/posts/pfbid022TedwwoVmsuJuZUAbDSE7qt2GcjTZqZHtbyQnkxRAjcLkxBZmBTiNTTTEPWYtjfdl">Rekha Morgan</a> who claimed that she was on her way home when she stumbled upon the incident along Jalan 18/17 in Taman Kanagapuram at 8:55 pm.

As Reksha was driving by the area, she noticed that 6-7 enforcement officers were assaulting an old man. The post stated that the officers had threatened the man and also struck the senior citizens using an iron rod while trying to protect his dogs from being injured or captured.
&ldquo;I stepped out of my car to stop them from harassing him further and told them this is not the right way to carry out their duty and the officers responded &ldquo;kita government, memang begini kita buat kerja&rdquo;. &ldquo;Report polis la&rdquo;, said one of the officers.
After 5 minutes of explaining the situation to the elderly man, he had agreed to hand over 3 of his dogs one of them was a puppy. Reksha also explained that the officers had allegedly not shown any proof of identification nor copies of any reports that had been lodged against the elderly man and his dogs before the assault happened.
CCTV Footage Exposes The Acts Of The MBPJ Officers
In the CCTV footage from the scene, it showed the dogs running back to the man as they were being chased by the officers with the iron poles. Not knowing what was going to happen to the dogs, the elderly man had tried to protect them and was struck by one of the poles in the process.

The second video showed that as the elderly man tried to close the door, the officer forced it open and held its side, forcing the man to keep it open.&nbsp;

As a result of the MBPJ officers&rsquo; action, the elderly man sustained a few injuries. From a cut on his wrist and also a swollen jaw and cheek.

It was noted that Rekha had seen the elderly man and his dogs in the area for years. From walking the dogs twice a day to keeping them well-fed and sheltered with his own expenses.
&ldquo;These dogs are harmless and even if mistakes were committed, physically or verbally abusing anyone in the name of power is a hard no. This is a classic example of power abuse in the name of duty. Hooligans in the name of government officers.&rdquo;
Police Report Lodged Against MBPJ

According to The Star, the man was identified as Patrick Khoo and he has since lodged a police report over the incident and used the CCTV footage as evidence. He also noted that the dogs have all been vaccinated and neutered.

As the news of the incident broke out, Lee Chean Chung, who is the MP for Petaling Jaya, requested for a comprehensive and open inquiry to be carried out regarding the incident, as well as any possible violations of the code of conduct by the enforcement officers.
&ldquo;More fundamentally, we have to review the standard operating procedures when dealing with community cats and dogs. As mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysia Madani concept requires us to treat animals respectfully and justly,&rdquo; he said.
He also confirmed that PJ residents are required to obtain a dog permit which needs to be renewed annually. Despite any possibilities of wrongdoing by Khoo, it should not have been a reason for officers to physically assault him.

Caught On Camera: Startling Footage Shows Alleged Assault Of Senior Citizen By MBPJ Officers

Whenever you go out in Malaysia, you&rsquo;ll probably notice that many of our malls or entertainment outlets actually have dedicated areas and facilities for the disabled (OKU). If you were to go to any mall within the Klang Valley, you&rsquo;ll frequently notice that they too ensure that there are sufficient restrooms for them whenever nature calls.
The good thing is that many Malaysians out there all respect the OKU citizens and always offer a helping hand to them in any way possible to ensure that what they are doing can be done smoothly, especially if they are taking public transport.
Unfortunately, not all people are good and sometimes they really need to be thought a lesson on how to respect the disabled.
OKU Man Waits 1.5 Hours To Use OKU Toilet
Recently, Daniel Lee who is a para-athlete advocate recorded an incident that he faced after needing to use the restroom at Pavilion KL.

As Lee was making his way to the OKU restroom, he found out that it had been occupied by someone else. He then suspected that the occupant was not a disabled individual and proceeded to wait outside for 1.5 hours.
He then knocked on the door 3-5 times to ensure that someone was inside and that&rsquo;s when he heard someone yell, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not done!&rdquo;.
Frustrated at the situation, Lee then contacted the mall's management and a staff member came to his aid. Shortly after, the man who had been hogging the OKU restroom came out and also attempted to shrug the issue off.
The Man Was Allegedly Washing His Clothes

Lee had confronted the man for hogging the OKU restroom for 1.5 hours and asked why did he do so. The latter answered that he had recently moved out and that he wanted to wash his clothes before his trip back to this home town.
He even gave the excuse stating that he only used the OKU restroom as he claimed that there had been no one using it and thought the people knocking on the door were the cleaners. Additionally, he did not want to use the normal restroom to wash his clothes.
I&rsquo;m Not In A Wheelchair Like You
When Lee requested for the man to wait till security arrives to assess the mall&rsquo;s policy regarding the issue, the man later got angry and tried to walk away.

He then proceeded to question the latter on why did he use the restroom thinking if he had any disabilities or if he was homeless and why he had used the OKU restroom.
In a rude manner, the man replied &ldquo;Of course, I don&rsquo;t have (any disabilities). I&rsquo;m not in a wheelchair like you&rdquo;. He later got more aggressive towards Lee and even told him to shut up. As the man lost his patience, he attempted to escape via the lift and eventually walked out of the shopping mall.

Mixed Reactions Among Netizens Online
As Lee did explain to the man that if there is a penalty for wrongfully using the disabled restroom, he would not pursue it further as he just wants it to be a stern reminder to the man. Lee also explains that the point of his post was not to shame the man but to help raise more awareness of the issues that are faced by the disabled community on a daily basis and hopes that more individuals would be more considerate in the future.
Yes, the man did apologise but no action would have been taken against him as Pavilion does not have any policies in place that could penalise or reprimand anyone who abuses the OKU restrooms.
Netizens reacted to a series of videos posted by Lee and despite having support for it, some also questioned why didn&rsquo;t Lee go to another OKU restroom instead of waiting for 1.5 hours. Some even condemned Lee for &ldquo;running the man&rsquo;s reputation&rdquo;.

Despite the negativity by some, many stood by Lee&rsquo;s side and supported his decision to voice the issue.

I do agree with Lee that the man shouldn&rsquo;t have done that in the first place and I do hope that lawmakers would not close one eye on issues like this in the future and would amend the law to have appropriate action to individuals who do such acts.
