In recent years, Malaysia has seen a growing awareness and commitment towards achieving gender equality, but the journey has its challenges. As the nation strives to break down traditional barriers, the gender disparity in various workforce sectors remains a critical focal point.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, in a promising development for Malaysia's pursuit of gender equality, recent data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) indicates significant improvements in various facets of the nation's gender landscape. The statistics reflect significant strides in various sectors, showcasing a gradual but notable shift towards a more inclusive and equitable society. We see an increase of 0.2% from the previous year &ndash; scoring 69.4% in the Malaysia Gender Gap Index (MGGI).

In a media statement dated 13 December 2023, DOSM published a report on <a href="https://www.dosm.gov.my/portal-main/publication">Statistics on Women Empowerment in Selected Domains in Malaysia</a>, focusing on the core set of gender indicators covering eleven domains altogether. The report also highlighted the Malaysia Gender Gap Index (MGGI) for women and men across four sub-indices encompassing economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

To sum it all up, while we see an increase in MGGI compared to last year&rsquo;s, the breakdown shows that women are still undervalued in certain sectors, especially in the Parliament and ministerial roles. Currently, out of 220 Dewan Rakyat seats, only 29 of them are women. As exhibited in the infographics, our political empowerment MGGI scored the lowest in uplifting and mandating women with ministerial roles.&nbsp;
In the media release, Dato&rsquo; Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia, commented that Malaysia ranked 93rd out of 146 countries in the world based on our MGGI scores and stood at 11th position in East Asia, ahead of the Republic of Korea (0.680), Brunei (0.693), China (0.678) and a slew other countries.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Recognising the significant role of women, Malaysia is dedicated to achieving gender equality and promoting the rights of girls and women nationwide. The government&rsquo;s continuous efforts and commitment to achieving gender equality &ndash; in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMK Ke-12),&rdquo; added him further.

In other news, Bursa Malaysia Berhad, in a press release dated 13 December 2023, shared the joyous news of being crowned as Asia&rsquo;s Leading Exchange In Gender Equality In Corporate Leadership in a report published by the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchange (UNSSE) and International Finance Corporation (IFC).
According to the report, which analyzed Exchange&rsquo;s top 100 listed issuers by market capitalization, Malaysia leads the Asian region regarding the percentage of women on board. To top it all off, 44% of the publicly listed companies (PLC) in Bursa Malaysia exceeded the target of having at least 30% female board members.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This recognition or finding speaks to the commitment and progress of Malaysian PLCs. We celebrate their positive actions to inculcate gender equality in their board compositions, reinforcing the benefits of a gender-diverse board,&rdquo; said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, the Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia.
#WomenEmpowerment From Now Onwards

Malaysian police have confirmed that the decomposed body found at a construction site in Bangsar is that of Jordan Michael John Johnson-Doyle, a 25-year-old British software engineer who had been reported missing since 2 June.

The discovery was made during a search operation on 4 June, at a partially completed condominium along Lorong Maarof. The search was initiated after Johnson-Doyle&rsquo;s movements were traced to the area. Over 30 officers took part in combing the site, and at approximately 5pm, a body was found face-down in a partially submerged lift shaft at one of the still-under-construction blocks.

A post-mortem conducted at University Malaya Medical Centre revealed that the cause of death was a chest injury sustained from a fall from height.
&ldquo;There were no signs of foul play or criminal elements at the scene,&rdquo; said Rusdi. &ldquo;The case has been classified as a sudden death.&rdquo;
The body, which was discovered with most of its clothing removed, was recovered at around 9.30pm on the day of the search and taken for forensic examination.

He had sent a photograph from the bar to a friend, but after that, his phone went silent and his social media activity abruptly stopped. Concerned family members, unable to reach him, reported his disappearance to the authorities.
Staff at the bar confirmed his attendance that evening, but were unable to provide further details about his departure or movements afterward.

A fatal accident involving a Taiwanese man who fell onto the Light Rail Transit (LRT) tracks at Pusat Bandar Puchong has prompted renewed scrutiny over safety standards at Malaysia&rsquo;s public transport hubs. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has since instructed Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the LRT system operator, to accelerate the installation of platform screen doors across all LRT stations to prevent similar tragedies.
Evening Commute Turns Tragic

The victim, later identified as 63-year-old Chang Pao Shih from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, died on the evening of Tuesday, 3 June 2025, after reportedly falling onto the tracks at around 5.54pm. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.05pm and swiftly deployed a team from the Subang Jaya fire station.
According to Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the man was found unconscious beneath the train tracks and was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial confusion surrounded his identity and the circumstances of the incident, but authorities later confirmed his nationality and retrieved his passport from the scene.
CCTV Footage Points to Accident

Transport Minister Loke, speaking at a press conference, confirmed that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the incident unfolding, and that there were no indications of foul play.
&ldquo;A report was presented by Prasarana yesterday, and it was an accident whereby the person may not have been aware about the platform,&rdquo; he stated. &ldquo;Let the police do their investigation. The CCTV recording will be shared with the police so they can conduct a detailed probe.&rdquo;
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed to coordinate with the Taiwanese embassy to assist in notifying and supporting the victim&rsquo;s next of kin.
Safety Barriers Now a Priority

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve asked Prasarana to make the necessary arrangements. They are currently in the planning stage and we hope to push this initiative forward,&rdquo; Loke said, noting that the installation process will require substantial financial support.
&ldquo;To retrofit older stations with these doors will incur a huge cost and we will need additional budgets,&rdquo; he acknowledged. Nevertheless, the minister emphasised that improving commuter safety must remain a national priority.
Previous Incidents Sparked Earlier Warnings

Throughout May, participating students have been able to join Bootcamp sessions, where they can learn the basics and get a feel for the game. Then in June, casual Open Uni Games give players a chance to warm up, get social, and meet fellow pickleballers before the real competition begins.
The main event kicks off 12 and 13 July at The Pickle Grounds, One World Hotel, with Mixed Doubles and Men&rsquo;s Doubles categories open to Novice-level players (defined as a DUPR rating below 3.25). Each of the five participating universities will send six teams per category, turning the weekend into a showdown of pride, skill, and hopefully not too many unforced errors.

What began as an ordinary late-night drive through the streets of George Town turned into a terrifying ordeal for a young woman, after a confrontation on the road allegedly escalated into a violent and humiliating assault involving a firearm. The alleged assailant? A man bearing the prestigious title of &lsquo;Datuk Seri&rsquo;.
The shocking incident, which unfolded in the early hours of 1 June, has not only sparked public outrage but also raised troubling questions about the ease with which influential individuals in Malaysia obtain and wield firearms &mdash; sometimes, quite literally, against unarmed members of the public.
Pistol Allegedly Shoved Into Victim&rsquo;s Mouth

According to the police report filed by the 28-year-old victim, the confrontation escalated rapidly and turned violent. The suspect was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. He is said to have brandished a gold-coloured pistol and, in a deeply disturbing act of aggression and humiliation, forced the weapon into the woman's mouth.
He then allegedly pistol-whipped her, using the grip of the firearm to strike her face, causing severe injuries. The suspect also reportedly punched her repeatedly in the face using both the weapon and his bare hands. The victim sustained a broken nose and bruising around her left eye as a result of the attack.
Following the incident, she received emergency treatment at Penang General Hospital before filing a formal complaint with the Northeast District Police at 5.57pm the same day.
Suspect Turns Himself In, Firearm and Licence Confiscated

Two days after the violent episode, on 3 June, the suspect turned himself in at the Northeast District Police Headquarters at approximately 9.30am. Northeast District Police Chief, ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad, confirmed the details in an official statement. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon, and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960, which prohibits the use or possession of firearms while intoxicated.
