If you scroll through Instagram or TikTok, you’ll all know that there’s been a trend of people asking others what they do for a living or even asking the worth of their whole outfit. While this has been pretty popular overseas, a couple of local influencers have recently been doing the same content here in Malaysia.
If you remember the term “RKOI” (Rich Kids of Instagram) then you can definitely know what to expect from this video. Half the time when people try out this trend, netizens will get pretty curious about the lifestyle of the individual who’s able to afford all these luxury brands as they wear it about like nobody’s business. Though it can be entertaining to see content like this, we have to remember that content like this can pretty much expose the individuals which leads them to explaining their source of income isn’t always the most morally right thing.
Woman Shares Her Experience Of Being A Sugar Baby In Malaysia
Sam Wong (@samwongsx), a notable local influencer, has garnered a significant following by prompting Malaysians to elaborate on their choice of attire. Despite Malaysians generally being perceived as straightforward and uncomplicated individuals, there's one person who has recently stood out from the crowd, attracting considerable attention on social media due to the perceived value of her outfit.
During the interview, Sam Wong (@samwongsx) inquired about the cost of the woman's outfit, expressing admiration for her look from a distance. Initially, the woman started off modestly, stating that her outfit was priced at RM80 each, and her Zara boots cost RM300. However, things took an unexpected turn when she later disclosed the prices of the remaining items, including high-end accessories such as a Hermes bag, a Cartier ring, and even a Rolex watch. The total value of her entire outfit amounted to a staggering RM175,960.
Sam was understandably surprised by the exorbitant cost and questioned how someone so young could afford such luxury items. To his shock, the woman revealed she is a sugar baby affiliated with Sugarbook.
For those unfamiliar, Sugarbook was initially promoted as an online dating platform but faced backlash for allegedly promoting immoral activities, resulting in its ban from accessible Malaysian internet. Despite the ban, users can still access the website using a virtual private network (VPN).
The woman further disclosed her monthly earnings as a Sugarbook user, revealing that she makes RM15,000 per month as a sugar baby. She expressed contentment with her occupation, stating a preference for dating her sugar daddy over her previous relationships with individuals who were financially struggling.
During the interview, Sam raised the question of whether she would consider dating individuals who were "broke or not so rich," and her response was affirmative. However, she added the condition that they should be able to earn at least RM20,000 per month for her to consider a relationship.
Woman Faces Backlash From Netizens
Naturally, given the revelation that the woman identifies as a sugar baby involved with Sugarbook, the video garnered a myriad of contrasting comments. Some criticized Sam for seemingly endorsing questionable activities, while others expressed disapproval, suggesting that the woman should feel ashamed of her occupation rather than proudly admitting to it. On the contrary, a supportive faction defended her right to make personal choices and live the way she wants.
Conversely, scepticism arose among those who doubted the authenticity of her lavish lifestyle and high-end possessions. Accusations surfaced, with some asserting that her bag and jewellery were counterfeit, arguing that they did not appear genuine. Adding a touch of irony, aside from challenging her alleged use of fake goods, some individuals criticized her pronunciation of the brand names.
Here’s some of the comments:
In the wake of the substantial backlash directed at the woman, Sam posted a follow-up video, shedding light on the extreme actions taken by certain netizens. He disclosed that some individuals had crossed boundaries by allegedly stalking and harassing the woman and her family members following the viral spread of his initial video.
He emphasized that his street interviews serve as a platform for discussions that often remain overlooked by mainstream media, aiming to break stereotypes. Unexpectedly, the comments section spiralled into a frenzy, prompting him to urge netizens to refrain from harassing the woman and her family. He underscored the potential harm caused by hurtful comments, emphasizing that their impact can linger for extended periods, affecting individuals in the video for days, years, or even a lifetime.
Ultimately, everyone has their own path in life, and it's important not to pass judgment on others based on their choices. Disagreements with someone's lifestyle shouldn't translate into dictating how they should live. As Sam wisely emphasized, let's embrace kindness both in the real world and on the internet.
