Over the past few months, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has been discussing the implementation of Account 3. Unlike Accounts 1 and 2, which are designated for retirement or specific needs like education and healthcare, with the option for partial withdrawals at age 50, Account 3 offers members the flexibility to withdraw funds whenever they choose, rather than waiting until retirement.
After much discussion, it seems that changes are finally on the horizon for EPF members, with an official start date now in place for Account 3.
EPF Account 3 Will Officially Start From 11 May

EPF has declared its intention to restructure its members' current two accounts into three, effective May 11 onwards. This restructuring initiative is designed to enhance income security post-retirement while catering to the evolving life cycle requirements of individuals.
This will now be the new structures of the three accounts:
<ul>
<li>Akaun Persaraan: Replaces Account 1, holds savings for retirement</li>
<li>Akaun Sejahtera: Replaces Account 2, focuses on life cycle needs</li>
<li>Akaun Fleksibel: Allows withdrawals for short-term needs.</li>
</ul>
How Does The New Accounts Work?
Before the advent of Account 3, 70% of each member's monthly contribution was funnelled into Account 1, dedicated to retirement, while the remaining 30% went to Account 2. However, with the introduction of Account 3, contributions will now be split into three categories: 75% to Account 1, 15% to Account 2, and 10% to Account 3.
Starting May 11, Account 3 will launch with a zero balance. From May 11 to August 31, 2024, members will have a one-time opportunity to transfer a portion of their savings from Sejahtera to Fleksibel as an initial balance. However, it's important to note that if members choose not to opt-in for this initial transfer, their funds will remain untouched, and the existing balance will remain in Akaun Sejahtera, as stated by EPF. It&rsquo;s also worth noting that the transfer amount would highly depend on the member&rsquo;s Sejahtera account balance.

<ul>
<li>Any amount that is below RM1,000 will go to Fleksibel.</li>
<li>Amounts between RM1,000 to RM2,999, RM1,000 will go to Fleksibel and the remaining amount will go to Sejahtera.</li>
<li>Amounts that are RM3,000 and above will have a specific portion of it transferred to each account (Persaraan, Sejahtera and Fleksibel).</li>
</ul>
Upon reaching the age of 55, the combined savings from the three accounts will be amalgamated into Akaun 55. Any contributions made thereafter, upon reaching 55, will be directed to Akaun Emas.
Flexible Withdrawals But At A Minimum Amount

Individuals seeking to withdraw funds from Account 3 have the freedom to do so at their discretion, for any purpose they deem fit. It's important to bear in mind, though, that the minimum withdrawal amount is RM50. Members interested in making withdrawals must apply either online via KWSP i-Akaun or in person at any EPF branch nationwide.
"The main focus of the EPF Account Restructuring initiative is to empower members in making decisions to balance future needs for retirement between short-, medium- and long-term financial needs.
"This initiative will also help increase members' retirement savings so that they will have sufficient retirement income to sustain their needs after retirement," said EPF chief executive officer Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn.
Starting May 12th, individuals intending to access their Account will have full system access. Further details can be obtained from EPF branches, the official website, and the KWSP i-Akaun app.
The pivotal question we must ponder is whether we should opt to withdraw funds from Account 3 or reinvest them into Accounts 1 and 2.
From a longevity standpoint, redirecting funds to Accounts 1 and 2 seems prudent. However, given the current economic climate, many find themselves in dire need of immediate financial support. Perhaps a balanced approach is warranted: setting a self-imposed restriction to utilize funds from Account 3 solely for emergencies, considering its accessibility.

On 2 May, the pair orchestrated a dramatic fake kidnapping at a hotel along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, replete with disturbing video evidence to support their act.
In the staged footage, Ye appeared half-naked, bound, gagged, and soaking wet &mdash; an apparent victim of waterboarding and abuse. To further sell the illusion, the alleged kidnappers claimed he had been beaten and strangled. Voice-changing software was reportedly used to create convincing phone calls demanding the ransom.
The intent was to terrify Ye&rsquo;s 40-year-old mother, Cheng Zhiwen &mdash; a successful businesswoman based in Dubai &mdash; into handing over millions for her son&rsquo;s &ldquo;safe return&rdquo;.
Family Falls for the Hoax, Then Calls Authorities

What followed was a large-scale investigation involving multiple Malaysian law enforcement agencies and the Singaporean authorities. With no signs of forced entry or abduction, suspicion began to mount. Immigration and travel records revealed that Ye had crossed into Malaysia via Johor Bahru voluntarily after reportedly playing online games in Singapore the day before the incident.
A Trail of Lies Leads to Arrests &amp; A Scam Rooted in Past Rejection

However, inconsistencies in Ye&rsquo;s story during police interviews led to further scrutiny. The entire kidnapping narrative soon began to fall apart under pressure, exposing the elaborate ruse for what it truly was &mdash; an attempted fraud.
According to reports, the idea may have stemmed from an earlier failed attempt to get money from family. Just two months prior, Ye had allegedly approached his grandfather with a claim that he had been duped in a cryptocurrency scam and requested 40,000 yuan (about RM23,900). When the elder refused to comply, Ye appeared to have escalated his tactics dramatically.
Legal Consequences and Courtroom Developments

During proceedings before Judge Azrul Darus, both students pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at RM30,000 each, with two sureties. The judge also ordered them to surrender their passports as part of the bail conditions. The case is scheduled for mention on 27 May.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Syafina Radzuan is leading the case, while lawyers Ernie Sulastri Ahmad and Ramesh Sivakumar represent the accused.

For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.

While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.

More than a decade after the horrific downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the United Nations&rsquo; aviation body has formally ruled that the Russian Federation was responsible for the 2014 air disaster over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board. The decision marks a significant step in the long quest for truth, justice, and accountability led by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands.
MH17 Shot Down by Russian Missile Over War-Torn Ukraine

The tragedy sent shockwaves around the globe, coming just four months after the disappearance of MH370, another Malaysia Airlines flight, whose fate remains unresolved.

Recently, a viral post across social media and WhatsApp chats drew public attention to a potential scam involving QR codes. Shared by Facebook user Bang Rajan VII in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/487246842365526/posts/1325506565206212/">local community group</a>, the post featured a video and several photos of vehicles parked in a shopping complex, each with what appeared to be summons slips placed on their windscreens.
At first glance, the situation raised red flags&mdash;why would cars parked legally within a shopping centre receive summonses? Many assumed it was the latest phishing ploy targeting unsuspecting Malaysians.

Upon closer inspection, however, eagle-eyed netizens spotted inconsistencies in the summons slip. A glaring typo&mdash;&ldquo;Jalan Pegankutan Jalam 1988&rdquo;&mdash;was one clue, but the biggest giveaway came from the plate number printed on the notice: &ldquo;MALF2025&rdquo;. It turns out, the &lsquo;summons&rsquo; was actually an unorthodox promotional gimmick for the upcoming Malaysia Auto and Lifestyle Festival (MALF2025), set to take place from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Sepang International Circuit. The official website of the event was even listed discreetly at the bottom of the slip.

Shopee sellers are bracing for yet another increase in operational costs as the e-commerce platform confirmed a hike in its SPayLater seller fee. The change, set to take effect on 8 May 2025, will see the fee rise from 3.5% to 4.5% for all completed orders involving the SPayLater payment option.
The update was announced through Shopee&rsquo;s official Seller Education Hub, continuing a trend of rising charges for merchants using the platform.
What Is SPayLater?

SPayLater is Shopee&rsquo;s Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) scheme, designed to give buyers flexibility in managing their purchases. Instalments up to three months typically carry no extra fees for buyers, but longer tenures can incur charges of up to 36%, depending on the duration.
However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

A number of sellers have even suggested raising their prices to cushion the impact of the new fee, potentially making Shopee less competitive for buyers as a result.
Sellers Speak Out: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s Getting Too Much&rdquo;
Among those voicing concern is Loh, a power tool seller who requested partial anonymity. Speaking to local media, Loh said that the compounding cost of selling on Shopee&mdash;including this new SPayLater fee&mdash;is driving him to reconsider the platform entirely.
&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;
A Pattern of Increasing Charges

Shopee Hikes SPayLater Seller Fee To 4.5% From 8 May

Malaysia&rsquo;s real wages have deteriorated drastically over the past four decades, leaving today&rsquo;s workforce with significantly reduced purchasing power, former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim warned in a recent interview with Sinar Harian. He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

Quoting recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhammad pointed out that around 40% of university graduates today earn less than RM2,000 per month in their first job. &ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

As of 31 December 2024, there were 16.78 million workers in the country, with 2.37 million or roughly 14% of them being foreign workers.
These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. Muhammad highlighted that many local nurses are now migrating to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE, where they can earn two to four times more than they would at home.
For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

Muhammad also criticised the nation&rsquo;s obsession with GDP growth as a benchmark for success. &ldquo;GDP doesn&rsquo;t put food on the table,&rdquo; he said bluntly. &ldquo;Real progress should be measured through employment quality, wage growth, and job structure&mdash;not aggregate output.&rdquo;
He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;
