Ever aspired to work for tech behemoths like Microsoft or Google?
If so, your aspirations might be closer than you think. Malaysia is gearing up for significant developments in the realm of Data and Cloud centres. Previously, we rejoiced at the news of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's visit to Malaysia, where he unveiled a RM10.5 billion investment earmarked for Malaysia's digital transformation over the next four years.

Now, joining the ranks of tech titans investing in Malaysia, Google has announced its commitment of RM9.4 billion to establish its inaugural data centre and Google Cloud region in the country.

The investment, trade, and industry ministry (Miti) has announced that Google will invest RM9.4 billion to establish its first data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia.
The ministry stated that this investment would support 26,500 jobs across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and finance, with a total economic impact valued at RM15.04 billion. Google's largest planned investment in Malaysia will be situated in Sime Darby Property's Elmina Business Park in Greater Kuala Lumpur.
Miti noted that the Google data centre will bolster popular digital services such as Search, Maps, and Workspace. Additionally, it will play a vital role in allowing Google to bring the advantages of AI to users throughout the country.
&ldquo;The Malaysia cloud region will join 40 regions and 121 zones currently in operation around the world to meet the growing demand for cloud services locally and globally, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) literacy programmes for Malaysian students and educators,&rdquo; the ministry said in a statement.
This investment follows Miti-facilitated discussions between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Alphabet Inc. chief financial officer Ruth Porat, and a memorandum of understanding signed with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority on Nov 14 last year.
Tengku Zafrul Aziz, leading Miti, expressed that the investment aligns with Malaysia's digital progress as outlined in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
He added, "We also appreciate Google's initiative to aid in fostering a strong talent ecosystem by promoting the enhancement of our people's digital skills, businesses, and careers."
Unlocking New Opportunities For Malaysians

"This investment is not just about infrastructure; it's about unlocking new possibilities for businesses, educators, and every Malaysian," said Farhan S Qureshi, country director for Google Malaysia, in a blog post on Thursday.
Qureshi highlighted that the Google data centre would support services like Google Search and Google Maps, and "pave the way for delivering the transformative power of AI to users and customers across the country."
He also mentioned that the Google Cloud region would offer high-performance, low-latency cloud services to enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations, with key controls in place to uphold the highest security and compliance standards.
Big Step Towards Attracting More Digital Investors

Malaysia's Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, recently lauded Google's USD2 billion investment in Malaysia, a move set to bolster the nation's digital transformation. "Google's investment marks a significant milestone in Malaysia's digital transformation journey, reaffirming our position as a key player in the global technology landscape," said Prime Minister Anwar. "We look forward to harnessing the benefits of this collaboration to drive inclusive growth and prosperity for all Malaysians,&rdquo; he said in his tweet.
