Only One Survivor Pulled from the Wreckage

In a rare miracle, one passenger survived: a British national of Indian origin named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Seated in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, Ramesh was able to escape the burning wreckage. He sustained multiple injuries but remained conscious and coherent when transported to hospital.
&ldquo;Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,&rdquo; Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from his hospital bed. &ldquo;When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance.&rdquo;
Footage taken after the crash showed Ramesh bloodied and limping as he was helped into an ambulance. Police later confirmed he had managed to jump from the aircraft through the emergency exit, and that he remains the only known survivor.
Devastation on the Ground

&ldquo;My son is safe, and I have spoken to him,&rdquo; said a woman named Ramila, whose son had just returned to the hostel for lunch. &ldquo;He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries.&rdquo; Another local, Poonam Patni, recounted the horror: &ldquo;When we reached the spot there were several bodies lying around and firefighters were dousing the flames. Many of the bodies were burned.&rdquo;
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Authorities have asked families of the deceased to provide DNA samples for identification due to the severe burns suffered by many victims.
Cause of Crash Still Unknown
The aircraft had only just departed Ahmedabad&rsquo;s runway when it issued a Mayday call. Moments later, it vanished from radar. CCTV footage showed the plane struggling to climb before falling rapidly and disappearing from view, followed by a massive fireball rising from behind residential buildings.

Malaysia is mourning the loss of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students following a devastating bus crash along the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat, or JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak. The tragedy has prompted swift government action on multiple fronts, including the revocation of transport permits, cancellation of student loans, and the rollout of substantial financial assistance packages to victims&rsquo; families.
Fatal Crash Sparks Nationwide Grief

The incident occurred when a bus carrying 42 UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak collided with a Perodua Alza on the highway. The impact of the crash killed 15 students on the spot, while many others sustained serious injuries. The bus was reportedly being operated by a company based in Kedah, now found to have violated transport regulations.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the nation, with leaders across government expressing their sorrow and solidarity with the affected families. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim personally conveyed his condolences and has since announced a coordinated response to support the victims and ensure accountability.
Transport Ministry Revokes Bus Operator&rsquo;s Permits

In a press conference following the incident, Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that the bus operator had committed two significant regulatory violations. Firstly, the bus in question had been illegally sublet to a third party in Kelantan for RM500 per month, which contravenes vehicle permit rules. Secondly, the operator failed to activate the bus&rsquo;s GPS tracking system during its journey, thereby obstructing efforts to trace the vehicle's route and operational compliance.
As a result, the Ministry of Transport has taken decisive action by revoking all vehicle permits owned by the operator, with no opportunity for appeal. &ldquo;This is a serious breach of public safety and regulatory trust. We will not compromise when it comes to the safety of our people,&rdquo; Loke stated.
To prevent similar incidents in the future, the Land Transport Agency (APAD) will establish a centralised database containing driver profiles, including past convictions and blacklisted individuals. The database will allow bus operators to perform thorough background checks before hiring drivers, ensuring only qualified and safe personnel are employed in public transportation.
Financial Assistance for Families of Victims and Survivors

In a move to alleviate the financial burden on grieving families, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that each family who lost a loved one would receive RM10,000, while those with injured relatives would be provided with RM5,000 in immediate assistance. These payments are being coordinated at the federal level and will be disbursed promptly.
Government spokesperson and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the aid during a press briefing, also noting that the Attorney-General&rsquo;s Chambers has been directed to examine all insurance aspects related to the crash. This is to ensure families receive any entitled compensation without undue delay or bureaucratic hurdles.
PTPTN Cancels Student Loans for the Deceased

In a compassionate and symbolic gesture, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has announced the complete cancellation of all outstanding student loans held by the 15 students who lost their lives in the crash.
&ldquo;This is a measure of respect and support for the families,&rdquo; said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. &ldquo;They should not have to worry about financial obligations in such a time of grief.&rdquo; The Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, echoed the sentiment, stating that the move is in line with existing PTPTN policy and reflects the government&rsquo;s commitment to protecting students and their families during extraordinary circumstances.
Additional Support from Education and Welfare Ministries

The Ministry of Higher Education, through its foundation Yayasan Perkasa Siswa, has pledged further support. Each bereaved family will receive RM2,000 in funeral assistance, while students who were injured in the accident will receive RM1,000 in disaster relief funds.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will provide RM1,000 in aid to each of the 10 UPSI students currently receiving treatment in intensive care units across two hospitals in Perak. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the funds are being drawn from the Yayasan Kebajikan Negara under the Skim Pemberian Ehsan Kepada Keluarga Mangsa, a special assistance programme for disaster victims and their families.
Calls for Greater Accountability and Reform

The tragic accident has reignited public concern over the safety of long-distance travel for students and the enforcement of transport regulations. Transport Minister Anthony Loke reiterated that the government will take stern action against any operator found to be in violation of safety standards. &ldquo;This is not an isolated case. We must learn from this tragedy and ensure our enforcement mechanisms are foolproof moving forward,&rdquo; he said.
The government is also urging private bus companies to take greater responsibility for the condition of their vehicles and the qualifications of their drivers. Regular audits, enhanced digital tracking systems, and stricter licensing protocols are among the proposed reforms to be rolled out in the coming months.
