Have any plans this August? Living in KL offers plenty of adventures around town, assuming there's no traffic jam. If you&rsquo;re free on August 17, you might want to catch singer-songwriter Dhruv, who just announced a listening party in Kuala Lumpur.
To promote his upcoming album, &lsquo;Private Blizzard&rsquo;, the British-born artist will hold a series of listening events throughout August in major Southeast Asian cities, including Mumbai, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Singapore, and KL.
In addition to the listening events, Dhruv will also host pop-up shows in Mumbai and KL. Details on ticket prices and venues are yet to be announced.
Who Is Dhruv?

Dhruv Sharma, born on February 25, 1999, is a British-Indian singer-songwriter who has garnered widespread attention in the music industry. Growing up in Singapore, Dhruv developed an early passion for music, learning the piano and writing melodies as a child. He moved to the United States to attend Yale University, where he balanced his studies with his burgeoning music career.
Dhruv released his debut single "Double Take" in 2019 while still a student, which later went viral on TikTok in 2021, becoming a sleeper hit and topping charts in countries like the Philippines and Thailand. So, Why A Listening Party And Not A Concert?
Dhruv shared that the concept of hosting listening parties stems from his experiences growing up in Singapore, where he understands the frustration of artists often bypassing the region. In 2023, the R&amp;B singer was set to perform at the Good Vibes Festival but couldn't enter the country due to circumstances beyond his control.

Back then, Dhruv also took to his Instagram stories to express his frustration over the incident, revealing that he and his team were stranded at KLIA for over 14 hours. He expressed his regret at being unable to enter the country and apologized to fans who had bought tickets to see him perform. Dhruv assured his followers that returning to Malaysia would be his top priority.
It&rsquo;s worth noting that the Good Vibes Festival 2023 was eventually cancelled after its first day due to controversy surrounding The 1975's frontman Matty Healy, who made a controversial speech about LGBT rights and was later seen in an onstage kiss with band member Ross MacDonald.

In a dramatic conclusion to one of Malaysia&rsquo;s most high-profile political court cases in recent years, former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been fully acquitted of all corruption-related charges by the Court of Appeal. The unanimous decision, delivered by a three-judge panel, reverses the Kuala Lumpur High Court&rsquo;s previous conviction, which had sentenced the Muar MP to seven years in prison, two strokes of the rotan, and a RM10 million fine.
Justice Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, who chaired the panel, announced the decision on 25 June 2025, alongside Justices Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin. Justice Noorin, delivering the court&rsquo;s judgment, emphasised that the original trial had been marred by serious legal and procedural missteps, leading the panel to conclude that Syed Saddiq should never have been convicted in the first place.
Flawed Trial and Misinterpretation of Evidence

Justice Noorin explained that the trial judge had erred significantly in assessing the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence. In particular, she stated that the judge failed to consider key pieces of contradictory evidence and had accepted witness testimony that may have been made under duress from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
&ldquo;The learned trial judge did not fairly evaluate the defence and wrongly treated it as a mere denial,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;There was no element of dishonesty when Syed Saddiq instructed his staff to withdraw party funds, as he was legally entitled to do so at the time.&rdquo;
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.
The Charges and What They Meant
Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

<li>Abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million from Bersatu Youth (ARMADA) funds;</li>
<li>Dishonestly misusing RM120,000 from a company linked to ARMADA, allegedly for personal use;</li>
<li>Two counts of money laundering, involving RM50,000 each, transferred into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.</li>
</ul>
The High Court had ordered the sentences for CBT and misappropriation to run consecutively, meaning he faced seven years in jail. The money laundering convictions would have added an additional two years, running concurrently. Syed Saddiq&rsquo;s sentence also included two strokes of the rotan and a RM10 million fine. The sentence had been stayed pending the appeal.
Emotional Reactions in the Courtroom

Present during the hearing was actress and singer Bella Astillah, a close friend of the family, who was seen seated with his relatives, wearing a floral blue baju kurung.

The court has since ordered that his passport and bail money be returned. The Attorney General&rsquo;s Chambers has not yet confirmed whether it will seek to appeal the decision to the Federal Court.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for restraint and compassion following a highly charged student protest at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), where a caricature of his face was burned during an anti-corruption rally. In his statement, Fadhil invoked the legacy of Anwar Ibrahim himself &mdash; who, as a student leader in the 1970s, led similar acts of protest. He pointed to Anwar&rsquo;s involvement in burning a copy of 13 Mei, a book by Malaysia&rsquo;s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, during a student demonstration over perceived injustices.
&ldquo;We were inspired by Anwar&rsquo;s own activism. Just as he once burned a book he believed undermined the truth, we burned his caricature to highlight betrayal and hypocrisy,&rdquo; Fadhil wrote. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think Anwar, upon seeing the video, would be reminded of who he once was.&rdquo;
He also added that the outrage from Anwar's loyalists &mdash; including youth groups such as ABIM and AMK &mdash; missed the point, as they were more concerned with optics and reverence than the actual issues being raised.
UMS: Burning Was &lsquo;Immature and Uncivilised&rsquo;

UMS, however, has firmly condemned the act. Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor described the incident as &ldquo;uncivilised, immature, and unreflective of the intellectual standards expected of university students.&rdquo;
He confirmed that 13 students had been identified as participants in the protest, and two were directly involved in burning the caricature. The university indicated that disciplinary proceedings were being considered under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). A committee of academics would be established to review the matter and determine appropriate action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
Despite the criticism, the protest&rsquo;s central message appears to have struck a chord with many Malaysians disillusioned by the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts, particularly in East Malaysia.

Datin Vivy Sofinas Yusof and her husband, Datuk Fadzarudin Shah Anuar &mdash; co-founders of the once-celebrated fashion and e-commerce brands FashionValet and dUCk &mdash; are set to stand trial in 2026 for allegedly misappropriating RM8 million in investment funds. The funds, entrusted to their company by two government-linked investment giants &mdash; Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) &mdash; were meant to support and develop local entrepreneurship.
Instead, the high-profile couple is accused of transferring the RM8 million from FashionValet Sdn Bhd into a separate entity they also owned &mdash; 30 Maple Sdn Bhd &mdash; without obtaining approval from FashionValet&rsquo;s board of directors. The alleged financial misconduct is said to have taken place on 21 August 2018 at Public Bank&rsquo;s Bukit Damansara branch in Kuala Lumpur.
Trial Dates Set for 2026

After months of legal developments, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has now fixed 15 days for the full trial next year. Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad confirmed the following dates:

</ul>
The next case mention is scheduled for 27 October 2025, allowing the defence team more time to examine forensic reports and prepare their arguments. According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, the prosecution intends to call 26 witnesses to testify over the course of the trial.
Vivy and Fadzarudin, both aged 37, were not present during the recent case management hearing on 23 June 2025, as their legal counsel had secured an exemption from court attendance. The couple continues to be represented by lawyer M. Athimulan.
Pleading Not Guilty to CBT and Alternative Charge

The charges, first read in court on 5 December 2024, fall under Section 409 of the Penal Code, read in conjunction with Section 34, which pertains to criminal breach of trust (CBT) committed by a public servant or an individual in a position of trust. If found guilty, they face between two and 20 years&rsquo; imprisonment, whipping, and a fine.
Additionally, the couple faces an alternative charge under Section 403, also read with Section 34, for dishonestly misappropriating property belonging to the company. This charge carries a lighter penalty &mdash; a prison term ranging from six months to five years, and may also include caning and a fine upon conviction.
Both Vivy and Fadzarudin have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Controversy Surrounding Internal Acquisition

The acquisition was made through the issuance of 851,686 new ordinary shares in FashionValet. According to filings with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), the internal valuation placed the value of the dUCk brand at RM68.8 million, with an additional RM21 million assigned as goodwill.
Although 30 Maple had posted profits of RM8.5 million in 2017 and RM7.7 million in 2018 &mdash; along with a RM10 million dividend payout &mdash; the timing and structure of the RM95 million acquisition deal sparked scepticism.
Critics argue that the founders effectively channelled public investment funds back into their personal company, raising ethical concerns over whether such internal transactions should have received greater scrutiny, especially given the involvement of taxpayer-linked capital.
From Digital Darlings to Legal Defendants
