Malaysia Lacked Budget To Send Athletes

Local breakdancer and national athlete Firdaus &ldquo;Sora&rdquo; Nawir recently disclosed that Malaysia could have had a representative at the Olympics&mdash;if only there had been sufficient funding. Responding to a netizen's question about why Malaysia hasn't competed in Breaking, despite its vibrant breakdancing community, Firdaus explained, &ldquo;I had to finance my participation in each qualification competition myself. Qualifying for the Olympics is no easy feat. It got to the point where I had to stop competing overseas because I simply couldn&rsquo;t afford it.&rdquo;

In case you weren't aware, Malaysia boasts local talents with a strong background in competitive breakdancing. Some of our national athletes have even earned multiple medals in the sport, including Sam Jee Lek, also known as Legosam, who secured a gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games.

However, qualifying for the Olympics is far from easy. Just like in sports such as golf, tennis, or swimming, breakdancing athletes must compete in numerous events to earn a qualification spot. These spots are only awarded at specific competitions, like the World Championships and the Olympic Qualifier Series, for those hoping to represent their country. While these competitions are open to anyone who wants to participate, the major challenge is that they are usually held overseas, making it prohibitively expensive for our local athletes to attend.
Netizens Disappointed At The Efforts Of The Government
After Firdaus tweeted about the lack of funding that forced him to abandon his attempts to compete overseas, many netizens expressed their disappointment. They lamented the government's failure to allocate more funds for national athletes, noting it was a missed opportunity not to have a representative in breakdancing given the potential for success.
Netizens also took the chance to thank Firdaus and other national breakdancing athletes for their dedication to representing Malaysia internationally, despite the lack of support from the government.

Breaking Won&rsquo;t Be In LA 2028
Unfortunately, this year marked the debut and final appearance of breakdancing at the Olympics, as it will not return for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. This means we&rsquo;ll be down one opportunity to compete for a gold medal. However, for the 2028 LA Olympics, five new sports will be added to the event lineup:

Now, everyone would be familiar with Squash as it is synonymous with the legendary Datuk Nicol Ann David, an eight-time World Squash Champion who held the world No. 1 ranking for an astounding 108 consecutive months until September 2015.
Nicol&rsquo;s legacy lives on through emerging talents like Sivasangari Subramaniam, who made history in April 2023 by winning the London Classic, securing Malaysia's first major women&rsquo;s squash title since Nicol's reign.
You may be wondering, why hasn&rsquo;t Squash been added over all the years of the Olympics and that&rsquo;s because since 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed host countries to temporarily add new sports to the Olympic program, opening the door for both returning and debut events. This policy led to the inclusion of karate, baseball/softball, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Paris 2024 retained skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing, while introducing breaking (breakdancing) as a new event, paving the way for squash to make its Olympic debut.
With four years to go, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics present a promising and exciting chance for our country to secure its first gold medal.

The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has issued a formal termination notice to ride-hailing platform inDrive, signalling the potential end of the company&rsquo;s operations in Malaysia. The notice, dated 24 April 2025, gives the company three months to either resolve the situation or return its Intermediation Business Licence (IBL) by 24 July 2025.
APAD cited non-compliance with conditions outlined under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715) and regulatory requirements introduced in 2019. These include failing to ensure that its drivers possess valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and E-Hailing Vehicle Permit (eVP) licences&mdash;documents that are legally mandatory for all e-hailing drivers in Malaysia.

The situation escalated due to a rise in safety-related incidents involving inDrive drivers, which further undermined public trust in the platform. APAD&rsquo;s decision also reflects wider efforts by Malaysian authorities to tighten oversight over e-hailing services and curb unauthorised operations.
This enforcement action bears striking resemblance to the case of Maxim, another Russian-founded ride-hailing firm that was expelled from the Malaysian market in 2023. At the time, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) discovered that out of 5,000 vehicles listed under Maxim, only 8% were properly licensed. That led to a full revocation of Maxim&rsquo;s licence and a ban on its services in the country.
inDrive Responds: &lsquo;We&rsquo;re Engaging with Authorities&rsquo;

&ldquo;We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and accessible mobility solutions to the tens of thousands of people across Malaysia who rely on our platform every day,&rdquo; the company said. &ldquo;As a global mobility and urban services platform, inDrive operates with the highest regard for local laws, regulations, and the communities we serve.&rdquo;
The company also reassured its driver-partners and passengers that its services would continue uninterrupted while discussions with authorities were ongoing. inDrive Malaysia sent a message to its drivers stating it was &ldquo;currently in communication with the relevant regulatory authorities to seek further clarification regarding a recent development involving our operations.&rdquo;
It further promised to issue public updates once greater clarity has been achieved. In the meantime, drivers have been encouraged to continue offering services as usual, although their compliance with local licensing laws remains under scrutiny.
A Rocky Regulatory History in Malaysia

What sets inDrive apart from major competitors like Grab is its unique pricing model&mdash;users can negotiate fares directly with drivers, a concept inspired by traditional marketplace bargaining. This &ldquo;name-your-price&rdquo; approach has attracted budget-conscious riders and drivers seeking greater control over their earnings.
What Happens Next? Appeal Process and Ministry Review
While APAD&rsquo;s notice is a serious blow, inDrive still has the opportunity to appeal. The company may submit a formal appeal through APAD, which will then forward the matter to the Ministry of Transport for further consideration. The final decision on whether inDrive will be allowed to continue operating in Malaysia lies with the ministry.
APAD&rsquo;s statement made it clear that enforcement action is a last resort, but one that will be taken without hesitation if necessary. The agency urged all existing e-hailing operators to prioritise service quality and passenger safety, stressing that non-compliance would no longer be tolerated in an increasingly regulated digital mobility environment.
The Bigger Picture: A Tighter Grip on E-Hailing
This case is part of a broader regulatory tightening across Malaysia&rsquo;s transport sector, particularly in the e-hailing space. With the rise of app-based services, the government is now under pressure to ensure that public safety, driver qualifications, and operational transparency are not compromised for the sake of rapid expansion or price competition.
For inDrive, the next few weeks will be critical. The company must either convince authorities of its willingness and ability to comply&mdash;or prepare to exit one of Southeast Asia&rsquo;s most promising mobility markets.

After more than a decade of dazzling performances with EXO and a string of solo hits under his belt, Baekhyun is finally embarking on his first-ever solo world tour &mdash; and it&rsquo;s one for the books. Who Is Baekhyun?

Baekhyun is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and actor renowned for his dynamic vocals and charismatic stage presence. He debuted in 2012 as a member of the K-pop group EXO, as well as its sub-units EXO-K and EXO-CBX, and later became the leader of the supergroup SuperM.
