When you hear the word Disney, a few iconic images likely come to mind: Mickey Mouse, beloved classic films, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to Disney&rsquo;s acquisition of Marvel. However, Disney&rsquo;s recent live-action remake of Snow White has sparked considerable controversy. The trailer, which was unveiled at Disney's D23 event on August 9, 2024, quickly became a flashpoint for backlash, racking up over 1 million dislikes on YouTube, far outnumbering its 84,000 likes. Despite YouTube's changes to public dislike visibility, the overwhelmingly negative response is still apparent through browser extensions, highlighting the deep division surrounding the film.

It&rsquo;s A Remake Of A Classic Film, Why The Controversy?

The origins of the controversy trace back to the film's early development. Issues first arose with the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White, a decision that has drawn criticism from multiple angles. Zegler herself has been the subject of online vitriol, particularly after making comments in 2023 that some fans found disrespectful to the original animated classic. Her remarks, including calling the original movie "weird" and referring to Prince Charming as a "stalker," alienated a segment of the Disney fanbase. Additionally, her labelling of the remake as the "PC Snow White" only fuelled further discontent.

Another significant point of contention has been the portrayal of the seven dwarfs. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized Disney for perpetuating outdated stereotypes by remaking a film that originally used dwarfs as magical creatures. In response, Disney attempted to sidestep this issue by reimagining the characters, opting for CGI representations instead. However, this decision backfired, as it not only disappointed those who hoped for more authentic representation but also led to widespread criticism of the visual effects, with some comparing the CGI dwarfs to the unsettling "uncanny valley" effect.
Compounding the film's challenges is the negative reaction to a leaked scene, which many found visually unappealing due to its heavy reliance on CGI. The scene, featuring a dwarf character resembling Mad Magazine&rsquo;s Alfred E. Neuman, was ridiculed online, adding to the film's growing list of problems.

Finances Are Off The Roof
Financially, the stakes are high for Disney, with production costs for Snow White reportedly ranging from $209 million to as much as $330 million, according to various sources. This significant investment adds pressure for the film to perform well at the box office, despite the growing scepticism surrounding it.

The controversy surrounding Snow White is not entirely unique. Disney's recent adaptations, such as The Little Mermaid, faced similar backlash, including accusations of "wokeness" and review bombing, yet still managed to achieve commercial success. This suggests that while online negativity is pervasive, it doesn't always translate to real-world box office performance.
Directed by Marc Webb and written by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, Snow White stars Rachel Zegler in the titular role alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The film's production has been lengthy, with principal photography starting in March 2022 and wrapping up in June of the same year, followed by multiple rounds of reshoots as recently as summer 2023. Despite the setbacks and ongoing controversies, Snow White is scheduled for release on March 21, 2025. Whether it will be a hit or a flop remains to be seen, but it is certainly one of Disney's most talked-about projects in recent memory.
YouTube Comments Section Pop Off 
With the entire internet buzzing about the film, it&rsquo;s no wonder that fans are flooding the comments with criticism, seizing the chance to roast the movie. Some have joked that this might be one of the rare Disney films no one wants to pirate, while others sarcastically thank Disney for investing so much money just to bring fans together in the comments section to bash the film.

Has Disney Lost Their Touch For Films &amp; Hiring Proper Actors?
When it comes to Disney, the company has certainly faced its share of criticism over the years, particularly concerning its films and series. A prime example is the recent Star Wars: The Acolyte, which has been met with significant online backlash.

In October 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. Since then, many of the Star Wars films and series have faced their share of criticism, though Rogue One and Andor received notable praise.
Recently, despite a promising start, Star Wars: The Acolyte will not be returning for a second season. The show, which delved into the dark side of the Force during the High Republic era, was cancelled due to significant fan backlash and declining viewership. Controversies surrounding the series included perceived inconsistencies with established Star Wars lore and contentious character dynamics. Despite initial plans for a multi-season arc, the series' mixed reception and lower-than-expected ratings led Disney and Lucasfilm to cancel its renewal, leaving many fans disappointed and several storylines unresolved.

Another point of contention is Disney's decision to cast controversial figures like Jonathan Majors, who initially portrayed Kang the Conqueror. Majors made his debut in Loki Season 1 and later appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He was set to be a major antagonist in the MCU, but those plans shifted after Marvel severed ties with him following charges of domestic violence and assault. This development marked the end of his involvement in the MCU.

As we await the release of Snow White in March 2025, the trailer is not yet among YouTube's Top 20 most disliked videos, but it&rsquo;s certainly making a mark with its high dislike count. For perspective, the current record holder for the most disliked video on YouTube is "YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind," which has a staggering 86.63% dislikes, totalling 20.358 million. Following it is "Baby Shark" with 14.972 million dislikes.
While the dislike count for Snow White may continue to rise, it&rsquo;s important not to judge the film solely by its trailer. The final product could still surprise us, so let&rsquo;s hold out hope that it&rsquo;s better than anticipated.
