Do you recall one of the pledges made by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim upon his inauguration as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister?
In case you missed it, his promise was to combat widespread corruption and implement economic reforms. Since the new government took office, we&rsquo;ve seen actions such as the removal of blanket subsidies on fuel, electricity, and poultry. While these measures were intended to address economic issues, they seem to have added to the financial strain for many Malaysians.
Putting things aside, the fight for reducing corruption has been ongoing and recently the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) uncovered RM248,443 in cash hidden beneath the bed of an immigration officer during a series of raids targeting an extensive 'counter setting' syndicate.

According to MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, the officer had concealed the money in the master bedroom of his Melaka residence. This discovery was part of a broader MACC operation that revealed a staggering RM800,000 hidden in the homes of two lower-ranking immigration officers.
In a separate raid, RM518,250 was found in a suitcase in the bedroom of a female immigration officer at her Pahang residence, as reported by Harian Metro.
Azam explained that the cash haul is part of the RM1.49 million seized from immigration officers involved in a syndicate accused of facilitating illegal entries into Malaysia. The officers are alleged to have manipulated the immigration clearance process using a method known as 'counter setting.'

He further detailed that 'counter setting' involves a syndicate promoting entry packages into Malaysia via social media platforms such as Facebook and Telegram. Agents would contact immigration officers through WhatsApp to arrange suitable dates for groups of foreigners to enter Malaysia as tourists. The officers would then approve these dates and provide details about the 'special counter' number for entry clearance.
&ldquo;This operation has exposed the depth of the syndicate&rsquo;s infiltration into immigration processes. The RM248,443 found under the officer's bed is just one part of a larger scheme,&rdquo; Azam noted.
In addition to the cash discovered under the officer's bed, MACC also seized USD 9,900 (RM41,990) and 5,470 Baht (RM696) in foreign currency. The operation also led to the confiscation of gold dinars, vehicles, and luxury items believed to have been acquired through illegal activities.

Meanwhile, Tan Sri Mirzan Mahathir and Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, the elder sons of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, have submitted their asset declarations to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed in a press conference that the brothers had filed their declarations within the allotted timeframe. He added that the investigation team is still liaising with Mirzan and Mokhzani&rsquo;s legal representatives.
The MACC had previously granted an extension for the asset declarations, though the length of the extension was not disclosed. Initially due in February, the deadline has been extended twice since then.
Mirzan is required to report his assets as part of an investigation related to the Panama Papers and his involvement in the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies. Mokhzani, meanwhile, is under scrutiny for alleged violations of the MACC Act and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).

Once these steps are completed, Bolt will monitor the flight status and automatically revise the ride&rsquo;s pick-up time in case of delays or remove the booking altogether if the flight is cancelled. The instruction was issued following a high-level coordination meeting on 16 May, chaired by Selangor&rsquo;s Executive Councillor for Public Health and Environment, Jamaliah Jamaluddin. The session, attended by representatives from the Selangor Health Department, Economic Planning Unit, district health offices, and local councils, was convened to discuss the prospect of a complete ban on vape sales in the state.

&ldquo;This measure is in line with national legislation and reflects Selangor&rsquo;s commitment to safeguard public health, especially that of our younger generation,&rdquo; she said in an official statement.
The state&rsquo;s decision follows growing public concern about the visibility of vape marketing, particularly near schools and public areas, which critics say normalises the habit among impressionable youth.
Vaping Among Teen Boys Described as &lsquo;Alarming&rsquo;

She described the figure as &ldquo;deeply alarming&rdquo; and warned that it signalled a dangerous trend that, if left unaddressed, could have long-term public health implications.
&ldquo;These statistics are not just numbers; they represent thousands of young lives potentially heading down a path of addiction and health problems,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We cannot afford to be passive. The time to act is now.&rdquo;
Online Sales Remain a Key Regulatory Challenge

Despite the legal nuances, Selangor is calling for widespread support to ensure the success of its anti-vape campaign. Jamaliah said that the cooperation of parents, schools, healthcare professionals, and civil society organisations is vital to changing the tide of vape use among teens.
&ldquo;We welcome the active involvement of stakeholders at all levels&mdash;state, federal, and grassroots&mdash;to ensure these measures are effective and enduring,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is not just a government effort. It must be a collective societal responsibility.&rdquo;
