With nearly five million Malaysians reported to be grappling with mental health challenges, and a worrying rise in cases among children and youths&mdash;doubling between 2019 and 2023&mdash;conversations around emotional and psychological well-being are now firmly in the national spotlight.
Recognising this growing concern, the Malaysian government has steadily increased its efforts to address mental health needs, including the provision of psychological and therapy services at selected public clinics. But the latest and perhaps most significant move is the inclusion of mental health conditions in the mySalam national takaful protection scheme&mdash;a change that signals a broader shift in policy and public health priorities.
What is mySalam?

Launched in 2019, mySalam is a government-backed takaful (Islamic insurance) scheme specifically designed to support the B40 income group&mdash;those in the bottom 40% of household earnings. It provides financial assistance to individuals diagnosed with critical illnesses, helping to ease the financial burden of treatment and recovery.
In 2025, the scope of mySalam was expanded to cover 50 critical illnesses, up from 45 the previous year. These are categorised into 12 major groups, and the scheme continues to evolve to reflect the nation&rsquo;s healthcare needs.
The scheme is fully funded by the government in collaboration with Great Eastern Takaful Berhad, and no premiums are required from recipients. It currently offers two main benefits:

<li>Hospitalisation Allowance: RM50 per day (up to a maximum of 14 days or RM700 per year) for admissions to government, university, or military hospitals.</li>
<li>Critical Illness Benefit: A one-off lump sum of RM8,000 paid to eligible individuals diagnosed with any of the listed illnesses.</li>

Mental Health Now Covered Under mySalam

Effective 1 January 2025, three mental health conditions were officially added to the list of critical illnesses covered by mySalam. This represents a pivotal policy shift, as mental health conditions are now recognised alongside other serious physical ailments such as cancer, heart disease, and kidney failure.
However, eligibility for the RM8,000 payout comes with strict medical criteria. Only specific, medically severe cases are covered, and claims must be backed by documentation from certified psychiatrists using recognised diagnostic standards.
The Three Mental Health Conditions Now Covered

<li> Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) </li>
</ol>

Also known as Gangguan Kemurungan Utama, MDD is a debilitating condition characterised by persistent sadness, emptiness, irritability, and a significant decline in daily functioning. It can affect social life, employment, and general well-being.
To qualify under mySalam:

<li>Diagnosis must be made by a psychiatrist using the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) or its recognised updates.</li>
<li>The diagnosis must meet the criteria for a severe episode.</li>
<li>The patient must have undergone electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) administered by a psychiatrist.</li>
<li>There must be documented, continuous use of prescribed antidepressants or other relevant medication for at least 180 days post-diagnosis.</li>
</ul>
Exclusions: MDD resulting from substance or alcohol abuse, or cases classified as Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood, are not eligible.

<li> Schizophrenia </li>
</ol>

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder involving significant disturbances in thought, perception, and emotional responsiveness.

<li>Continuous treatment with antipsychotic medication for a minimum of 180 days.</li>
</ul>
Exclusion: Schizophrenia caused by substance or alcohol use is not covered.

<li> Bipolar Disorder </li>

<li>Patient must receive consistent treatment using mood stabilisers, antipsychotics, or atypical antidepressants for at least 180 days.</li>
</ul>
Exclusion: As with the others, bipolar disorder cases related to drug or alcohol use are excluded from coverage.
How to Claim the RM8,000 Benefit
For individuals diagnosed with any of the three listed mental illnesses, the claims process is relatively straightforward but must be completed before 30 June 2025.
Step-by-Step Guide:

<li>Download the &ldquo;Critical Illness Claim Form&rdquo; from the official <a href="https://www.mysalam.com.my">mySalam website</a>.</li>
<li>Photocopy both sides of your MyKad (identity card).</li>
<li>Have your doctor complete the form, including:</li>

<li>Full name and IC number of the patient.</li>
<li>Details of the diagnosis.</li>
<li>Doctor&rsquo;s signature and official clinic/hospital stamp.</li>
</ul>
<li>Submit the completed documents at any mySalam counter or pop-up booth located at participating government clinics or hospitals.</li>

Timely submission is critical, as claims after 30 June 2025 will not be accepted.

&ldquo;Since its launch in 2019, mySalam has played a key role in easing the financial strain for Malaysians diagnosed with critical illnesses or requiring hospitalisation,&rdquo; he said in a recent statement.
&ldquo;Expanding our coverage to include mental health and rare diseases underscores our ongoing commitment to adapt the scheme to current healthcare realities and to protect those facing difficult diagnoses.&rdquo;

What was intended as a major flood mitigation and river restoration project has turned into an unsettling revelation of hidden tragedies and deep-seated pollution. Over a dozen human bodies, including that of a baby, have been discovered as part of the Klang River Flood Mitigation Project, carried out under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative.
These revelations have stunned both the project team and the public, offering a stark reminder of the environmental and societal challenges that lurk beneath Malaysia&rsquo;s most urbanised waterways.
Bodies Found Amid River Dredging

According to Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin, the discovery of human remains has not been an isolated incident, but a grimly recurring reality since works began on 1 November 2022. The project, which includes dredging and widening the river to reduce the risk of flooding, has exposed more than ten bodies, with some weeks witnessing back-to-back discoveries.
&ldquo;To date, we&rsquo;ve handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and fire department for further investigation,&rdquo; Syaiful revealed during a press visit to Zone 8 of the project in Kota Kemuning on 16 June.
He described the emotional impact of the discoveries on workers, noting that the infant body was particularly distressing. &ldquo;There was even a point where we found three bodies in three consecutive days,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;These are not the kinds of findings you prepare for in civil engineering.&rdquo;
Unprecedented Pollution: Fridges, Sofas and Motorcycles in the Riverbed

Beyond the haunting discovery of bodies, the flood mitigation teams have also encountered shocking levels of river pollution. As workers excavated sediment and debris, they pulled out massive items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, mattresses, bedframes, sofas, and even motorcycles from the bottom of the Klang River.
&ldquo;I honestly don&rsquo;t understand how an entire refrigerator ends up in a river,&rdquo; Syaiful said, baffled by the sheer scale of illegal dumping. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not just one or two isolated items&mdash;this has clearly been going on for a long time.&rdquo;
The level of pollution has made dredging efforts significantly more complex. To date, more than 918,936 cubic metres of waste material&mdash;including sediment, solid waste, and rocks&mdash;have been removed from the river as part of the ongoing restoration effort.
Additionally, LLSB records show that since 2016, a total of 94,000 metric tonnes of floating waste have been collected from the river&rsquo;s surface&mdash;highlighting both past neglect and the present urgency of clean-up operations.
Holistic Approach to River Restoration

The Klang River Flood Mitigation Project is part of a broader, long-term plan under the SMG framework to address flood risks while restoring the Klang River&rsquo;s ecosystem and turning it into a sustainable water resource. The initiative aims to expand the river&rsquo;s flow capacity by up to 40% and improve water quality to at least Class III on the Water Quality Index (WQI), allowing for future treatment into potable water.
Current works focus on Zones 6, 7, and 8 in Shah Alam, covering areas identified as flood-prone, including Alam Impian, Section 24, Section 17, and Kota Kemuning. The project includes widening the river from 50&ndash;60 metres to 80&ndash;100 metres, strengthening embankments with flood walls, geo bags, sheet piles, and introducing earth bunds for structural resilience.
The initiative also supports the Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage (SASUD) programme and the development of a water treatment plant at Sungai Rasau, aligning efforts to ensure Klang River becomes a future source of raw water supply for Selangor.
Minimal Community Disruption Promised

Despite the scale of the project, LLSB has assured the public that community disruption has been kept to a minimum. Measures have been taken to mitigate dust, noise, and traffic disturbances, including the provision of alternative routes, noise monitoring, and early communication with affected residents.
&ldquo;This is not just a construction site,&rdquo; said Syaiful. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a community-focused infrastructure project aimed at preventing disasters like flash floods while also creating long-term ecological value.&rdquo;
While engineering and environmental planning are progressing, Syaiful emphasised that public behaviour remains a critical challenge. He called for greater civic awareness, pointing out that many of the items dumped into the river could have been recycled or disposed of responsibly.
&ldquo;Some of these things may have washed in during floods, but not all of them. The volume is too high,&rdquo; he stressed. &ldquo;This shows a lack of civic responsibility. People must change the way they think about waste and how we treat our rivers.&rdquo;
Looking Ahead: A Cleaner, Safer Klang River
Syaiful confirmed that the flood mitigation and rehabilitation efforts will expand to other sections of the Klang River, prioritised based on flood risk assessments and population density.
He acknowledged that the project is not without its difficulties. &ldquo;Our challenges are significant&mdash;but we believe that this integrated, large-scale approach is the future of water management and flood prevention in Selangor.&rdquo;

Once the local court cases are resolved, Zdorovetskiy is expected to be deported from the Philippines as an &ldquo;undesirable alien.&rdquo; However, complications remain. Both the United States and Russia have thus far declined to take custody of him, potentially prolonging his stay in the Philippines even after sentencing.
The BI reiterated that deportation cannot proceed until all legal matters are settled. Commissioner Viado made clear that hospitality must never be mistaken for tolerance of disrespect or illegal activity.
&ldquo;Foreign nationals are welcome in the Philippines&mdash;but they are expected to obey our laws and respect our communities. Those who choose otherwise must face the appropriate legal consequences,&rdquo; he said.
Until then, Zdorovetskiy remains behind bars in Muntinlupa with no bail, no release date, and a trial that could stretch on for months.

The tragic discovery of a 39-year-old schoolteacher&rsquo;s decomposed body in her Johor home has sparked widespread concern and prompted authorities to issue a public appeal for assistance in tracing her only known living relative. The woman, who had been absent from work since September last year, is believed to have died alone nearly a month prior to the discovery of her remains.
Alarming Smell Leads to Grim Discovery

On the evening of Thursday, 12 June, residents of Bandar Selesa Jaya in Skudai were alarmed by a strong foul smell emanating from a house in their neighbourhood. After days of tolerating the stench, one concerned neighbour finally lodged a police report at the Nusa Bestari Police Station at approximately 8:06pm.
Responding officers forced entry into the premises, where they were met with a harrowing scene: the lifeless, heavily decomposed body of a woman&mdash;later identified as Lo Kwan Fong, also known as Luo Qunfeng (transliteration)&mdash;was found inside the house.
According to Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan, the Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief, the victim is believed to have died about a month earlier. Early observations ruled out any signs of a struggle or forced entry.
No Foul Play Suspected, But Autopsy Inconclusive

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru by forensic specialists. The body had reportedly deteriorated to such an extent that internal indicators were no longer viable for a conclusive assessment.
&ldquo;The autopsy could not ascertain the cause of death. However, there were no signs of criminal activity, and we have classified this as a case of sudden death,&rdquo; said ACP Kumarasan.
This classification rules out foul play for now, though police have not entirely closed the file, pending any new leads or forensic insights.
Months of Absence and Increasing Isolation

Lo, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, had not reported for work since 24 September 2024. However, those closest to her say she became increasingly withdrawn in the months prior to her disappearance.
In February 2025, her colleagues paid her a visit at home. It was the last confirmed contact anyone had with her. Subsequent efforts to reach her, including further home visits and attempts to call, went unanswered. Neighbours also noted that they had not seen her in a long time, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the strong odour began to spread that authorities were contacted.
She led a quiet, solitary life. According to her colleagues, she was reserved and rarely spoke about her personal affairs. She had reportedly lost both parents before 2010, and it was believed she had no siblings. She never married and had no children.
The only relative she had ever mentioned was her maternal aunt, who had moved to Singapore many years ago. This aunt, now estimated to be around 74 years old, is presumed to be her only surviving family member. However, no direct contact information for the aunt is known, making the search more difficult.
Her colleagues, heartbroken by the manner in which she passed, have since appealed for public assistance in finding this relative so that Lo can be laid to rest by family, not strangers.
Funeral Plans On Hold As Search for Kin Continues

Lo&rsquo;s body remains at the morgue while police and hospital authorities wait for her next of kin to come forward. Several kind-hearted members of the community have expressed willingness to help arrange a funeral service, but Lo&rsquo;s colleagues say they are holding out hope that a family member&mdash;particularly the aunt in Singapore&mdash;can be located.
&ldquo;Although people have come forward to help with her final rites, we truly hope her relative can be found to give her the proper farewell she deserves,&rdquo; said one co-worker. &ldquo;No one should have to die and be buried alone, especially someone who contributed to shaping the lives of young students.&rdquo;
Police and Public Appeal for Information
Authorities are now actively tracing Lo&rsquo;s family and have issued a public call for anyone with information to assist. Those who may have known Lo&rsquo;s family background or her late mother&rsquo;s connections in Singapore are urged to come forward.

The incident unfolded near the popular Lot 10 shopping mall, where a group of Malaysian university students noticed a man behaving oddly as he trailed a woman wearing a skirt. He was holding a paper bag in an unnatural position&mdash;angled just beneath the woman's skirt&mdash;as they crossed the street. Inside the bag, his smartphone was facing upward, allegedly positioned to secretly film beneath her clothing.
Realising something was wrong, the group&mdash;including the woman&rsquo;s friends&mdash;immediately confronted him. One of them grabbed his hand and asked, &ldquo;Bro, what are you recording?&rdquo; as another began recording the confrontation. The man, who was wearing a face mask, attempted to flee but was stopped at a nearby traffic light and later tackled to the ground when he tried to escape again.
Students Take Action Before Police Arrive

As onlookers gathered, the suspect was pinned down and held in a headlock by one of the students to prevent him from fleeing again. A security guard eventually intervened and took control of the scene before the police arrived. While waiting, the group demanded the suspect unlock his phone.
Initially, no incriminating content was visible, prompting concerns that the man may have deleted evidence. However, one of the students realised that some Android devices can switch between multiple user accounts or operating environments. Upon switching systems, they made a chilling discovery.
Staggering Archive of Voyeuristic Material Uncovered

The phone reportedly contained approximately 500GB of illicit upskirt videos and images&mdash;a collection so vast that it shocked even the seasoned among the group. Many of the victims appeared to be unaware they were being filmed, and several were reportedly not wearing safety shorts, making the act even more invasive.
Additional material found on the device allegedly included records linked to online gambling platforms, prompting speculation that the suspect may be involved in other illegal activities.
Suspect Believed to Be a Cyberjaya Student
Further investigation by the group revealed that the man is believed to be a student at a university in Cyberjaya. This revelation has sparked concern that such predatory behaviour might be occurring undetected within academic environments.
Fearing that the man could evade serious consequences or return to campus under false pretences, the students decided to publicly share their experience and the video of the confrontation. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want this person to tell people he was arrested for gambling and just carry on as if nothing happened,&rdquo; said one of the students involved.
Motivated by Justice, Not Fame
The video quickly went viral, with many praising the students for their courage and initiative. However, the individuals behind the video were quick to clarify their motivations. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not doing this for attention or praise. We just want to make sure he doesn&rsquo;t get away with it&mdash;and that women are warned,&rdquo; said the victim&rsquo;s friend in a statement.
The students stressed that sharing the video was about raising awareness, not showcasing heroism. They also warned other university students to stay vigilant, as there was evidence suggesting the suspect might not have acted alone.
