<p>Two years after sparking global outrage with a controversial joke about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Singapore-born comedian Jocelyn Chia has resurfaced with bold reflections and a surprisingly optimistic outlook on the fallout. Dubbed &ldquo;comedy&rsquo;s bad girl&rdquo; by Fox News, Chia insists she has no regrets &mdash; and, ironically, she now credits the backlash from Malaysia for propelling her international comedy career.</p>
<p>The infamous clip, recorded during a performance at New York&rsquo;s Comedy Cellar and posted to social media in June 2023, featured Chia making light of the MH370 tragedy as part of a routine on Singapore&ndash;Malaysia rivalry. The 89-second video quickly went viral, drawing criticism from political figures, comedians, and the public across Southeast Asia and beyond.</p>

<p>Speaking to <em>The Straits Times</em>, Chia remained unapologetic. &ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t trying to offend anybody. I was just doing my job,&rdquo; she said, adding that her comedy hinges on context, intent, and delivery &mdash; traits associated with the sharp, no-holds-barred style of New York stand-up.</p>
<p>The Boston-born former lawyer, who spent her formative years in Singapore and still has family there, said the controversial bit was not new. It had featured in her routine for over a year before it attracted attention online. Nevertheless, Chia acknowledged that in hindsight, she should have responded more swiftly to explain the nature of her comedy and avoid misunderstanding.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I should&rsquo;ve clarified my intent and explained what New York-style comedy is all about,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Instead, I chose to stay silent and prioritise my mental health. I was in Colorado, doing a show and enjoying the mountains. I didn&rsquo;t want to worry about what was going on.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Backlash from Malaysia and Singapore</strong></p>

<p>The backlash was swift and fierce. Malaysia&rsquo;s former badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and comedian Harith Iskander condemned the joke. Malaysia&rsquo;s police even sought Interpol assistance to locate Chia &mdash; a move that ultimately did not materialise. Singapore&rsquo;s Foreign Minister publicly apologised for her remarks, stressing that Chia did not represent Singaporean values. High Commissioner Vanu Gopala Menon also clarified that Chia was no longer a Singaporean citizen. Singapore&rsquo;s Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan has also issued an apology after replying to Syed Saddiq on X (formerly known as Twitter).</p>

<p>The fallout cost her professional gigs as well. American tech giant IBM dropped her as a regular broadcast host following complaints from their Malaysian office. Other scheduled shows were cancelled, including performances in New York.</p>
<p>Despite the criticism, Chia maintained her stance. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to apologise,&rdquo; she reiterated. &ldquo;This is the reality of my work &mdash; some jokes land differently with different audiences.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Turning Controversy into Career Opportunity</strong></p>
<p>While she was shunned by some comedians in Malaysia and Singapore, the reaction in the United States was markedly different. Chia said she found a surge of support and respect from her American peers. &ldquo;One comic even praised my ability to &lsquo;jiu-jitsu&rsquo; a cancellation attempt and turn it to my favour,&rdquo; she shared.</p>
<p>Chia capitalised on the attention, appearing on American radio and podcasts, and joining a comedy panel on Fox News. She was later offered a six-week comedy residency in Japan for 2024 &mdash; a milestone that marked her shift to a more global comedy platform.</p>

<p>Today, Chia is headlining her Asia tour, with stops in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan. Later this year, she will relocate to Barcelona to kick off her European tour, with scheduled shows in Switzerland, Poland, Germany, and Belgium.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a long-held dream of mine to live in Europe and enjoy a beach lifestyle,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s ironic, but I&rsquo;m grateful to Malaysia. This incident changed my life for the better.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Still Carrying the Label</strong></p>
<p>Although she has since moved forward with her career, Chia admits that she&rsquo;s still grappling with the label of being the &ldquo;Malaysia Airlines joker.&rdquo; Yet, she remains undeterred. With her high-energy delivery and personal brand of unapologetic humour, she continues to draw material from cultural differences, migration, and social dynamics.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This is happening for me, not to me,&rdquo; she said, referencing a mantra by motivational speaker Tony Robbins.</p>
<p>As she steps onto new international stages, Jocelyn Chia remains a polarising figure &mdash; a cautionary tale for some, a comeback story for others &mdash; but undeniably a comedian who refused to be silenced.</p>
