Malaysia&rsquo;s political landscape was dealt a significant surprise this week after PAS officially announced that it has ended its political cooperation with Bersatu, signalling a major shift within the opposition bloc ahead of future elections.
The decision was confirmed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang following a special meeting of the party&rsquo;s Central Working Committee held at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Hadi, the decision was made after the party reviewed reports, studies and assessments regarding the current state of its relationship with Bersatu. PAS also endorsed a decision reached by its Syura Council on 2 June, which examined the matter from policy, legal and public-interest perspectives based on the principle of Muslim unity, or penyatuan ummah.
In a statement, Hadi said PAS had resolved to terminate its political cooperation with Bersatu with immediate effect while exploring new political arrangements and electoral cooperation ahead of upcoming state elections and the 16th General Election (GE16).
Growing Tensions Behind the Split

The announcement did not come entirely out of the blue, as tensions between PAS and Bersatu have been simmering for months.

One of the most notable flashpoints was the political crisis in Perlis, which saw the removal of PAS Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli and the appointment of a Bersatu representative as his replacement.
PAS leaders openly criticised Bersatu&rsquo;s handling of the matter, viewing it as evidence of increasing friction between the coalition partners.
The party had also expressed dissatisfaction over what it claimed was interference in political appointments involving PAS-led states such as Kedah and Kelantan, as well as opposition from Bersatu towards admitting new Malay-Muslim parties into PN.
In May, Hadi publicly acknowledged that PAS was reassessing its relationship with Bersatu and even suggested that the party could contest the next general election without its long-time ally.
Those comments were later followed by a letter from Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who defended his party&rsquo;s actions and sought to address the concerns raised by PAS.
Syura Council Raises Concerns Over Bersatu's Internal Issues

Prior to the special meeting, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari also hinted that relations between the parties had become strained, suggesting that damaged trust would not be easy to repair.
While acknowledging Muhyiddin&rsquo;s efforts to maintain good relations, Fadhli argued that political partnerships should be judged not only by statements and promises, but also by actions.
PAS Looking Towards a New Political Alignment

In recent weeks, rumours have intensified over the possibility of renewed cooperation between PAS and UMNO through a revival of the former Muafakat Nasional alliance. The speculation gained traction after Hadi confirmed that leaders from both parties had recently met.
However, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later clarified that the meeting did not involve discussions about reviving the defunct alliance.
Despite the denial, political observers are likely to continue monitoring any signs of future collaboration between the two parties as the next election cycle approaches.
What Happens to Perikatan Nasional?

When questioned by reporters after the special meeting, Ahmad Fadhli declined to elaborate on PAS&rsquo;s future within PN, saying only that the current situation remains unchanged.
&ldquo;As of tonight, that is the situation,&rdquo; he said when asked whether PAS was still part of the coalition.
Similarly, Perlis PN chairman Shahidan Kassim pointed out that Hadi&rsquo;s official statement made no mention of withdrawing from Perikatan Nasional.
&ldquo;The president&rsquo;s statement did not touch on PN, so the position remains as before,&rdquo; Shahidan said.
The special meeting itself reportedly focused on the relationship between PAS and Bersatu and did not discuss the party&rsquo;s membership in PN.
As a result, PAS technically remains a component party of Perikatan Nasional despite formally ending its political cooperation with Bersatu.
Uncertainty Ahead of GE16

What began as a challenging mountain expedition ended in a two-week survival ordeal for Malaysian hiker Jaslinda Saludin, who was rescued after going missing during the Trans Spencer Chapman trek at Gunung Batu Putih in Perak.
The 49-year-old was part of a group of 14 hikers and two mountain guides who began their ascent on 23 May at around 2am. The trek, which spans part of the rugged Titiwangsa mountain range, is known for its steep gradients, dense forest cover, and unpredictable terrain.
However, the expedition took a dramatic turn when Jaslinda and another climber reportedly experienced health issues during the ascent. While the other hiker stopped, she is believed to have continued onward alone and was last seen on 24 May.
That decision marked the beginning of an intense SAR operation that would span nearly two weeks across dense jungle, rivers, and mountainous terrain.
Missing in One of Malaysia&rsquo;s Toughest Jungle Terrains

Authorities were alerted soon after she failed to return with the group, triggering a large-scale search effort involving the Fire and Rescue Department, police, forestry mountain guides, NGOs, and Orang Asli villagers.
Perak Forestry Mountain Guide coordinator Muzafar Mohamad described the search environment as extremely demanding, even for experienced personnel.
&ldquo;The terrain is filled with valleys, waterfalls and difficult ground. Even for experienced mountain guides, reaching certain sections is not easy,&rdquo; he said.
Search teams repeatedly combed the same zones, including areas where Jaslinda would later be found. However, dense vegetation, shifting river paths, and limited visibility made the operation challenging.
Despite extensive efforts, it was ultimately members of the Orang Asli community who first spotted her near a river at Kampung Lubuk Gaharu, Pos Musoh, on 6 June.
&ldquo;I Didn&rsquo;t Eat for Two Weeks&rdquo;

In the aftermath of her rescue, Jaslinda described the ordeal in stark and emotional detail, saying she had gone without food for the entire duration of her disappearance.
&ldquo;I had no food. I didn&rsquo;t eat for two weeks. I only ate today,&rdquo; she said in a video circulating online shortly after being found.
Her survival, she explained, depended entirely on whatever she could find in the forest. This included river water, dew collected from leaves, and water sourced from pitcher plants.
&ldquo;I drank black water, brown water, water from pitcher plants&hellip; I felt like I was hanging between life and death,&rdquo; she said.
She also described moments of disorientation where she would walk in circles while trying to retrace her steps and reconnect with her group.
&ldquo;I felt like I was dying going up and down, up and down. The ground was too soft,&rdquo; she added.
At one point, she also recalled encountering a cave-like shelter where she briefly took refuge as exhaustion set in.
Survival on the Edge: Dehydration and Exhaustion

Officials later confirmed that Jaslinda endured extremely limited access to clean water, particularly during the first few days of her disappearance.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said she survived by relying on natural water sources such as rivers and dew, and occasionally consumed wild forest produce.
There were also periods of approximately three days where she had no proper access to water, significantly increasing the risk of dehydration in Malaysia&rsquo;s humid tropical conditions.
Rescuers noted that she had sustained multiple injuries during her ordeal, including insect bites, abrasions, and wounds to her head. She is also believed to have fallen several times, including drops of up to five metres while navigating uneven terrain and river crossings.
Despite this, her ability to continue moving through the jungle is being credited to both determination and survival instinct.
Found by Orang Asli Villagers

Her eventual discovery came not from organised search teams, but from Orang Asli villagers who were heading towards a river in the Lubuk Gaharu area.
One of the villagers, Nazri Bah Eng, said she appeared weak, disoriented, and close to collapse when they found her.
&ldquo;She was crying and extremely exhausted. We immediately brought her back to the village chief&rsquo;s house and gave her food and drinks,&rdquo; he said.
She was later transported to Tapah Hospital via Emergency Medical Rescue Services at around 9.20pm the same day.

&ldquo;She is able to eat, speak and communicate normally,&rdquo; she said, adding that recovery has been progressing well and discharge is expected soon.
Jaslinda is currently being treated for external wounds, abrasions, and a leg injury requiring a partial cast. Doctors are also monitoring her carefully due to the risks associated with prolonged starvation and refeeding syndrome, a condition that can occur when food is reintroduced too quickly after extended fasting.
Emotional Recovery and Family Relief

Beyond her physical recovery, family members say Jaslinda is also regaining emotional strength.

BTS fever has officially returned to Malaysia, and fans are proving just how far they are willing to go for a chance to see the global K-pop superstars perform live.
The battle for tickets to BTS World Tour ARIRANG in Kuala Lumpur has turned into one of the biggest concert ticketing events the country has seen in recent years, with more than a million fans flooding online queues, cyber caf&eacute;s packed with hopeful concertgoers, and hotels around Bukit Jalil already seeing increased demand months before the concerts take place.
More Than A Million Fans Rush For Tickets

The frenzy began with the ARMY Membership Presale, which was exclusively available to fans with an official BTS ARMY membership through Weverse.
Hours before sales officially opened at 11am, thousands of fans had already entered virtual waiting rooms to improve their chances of securing tickets. As the sale began, queue numbers climbed rapidly, eventually reaching an astonishing 1.3 million users on the official ticketing platform.
Social media platforms such as X and Threads were flooded with screenshots of queue numbers, countdown timers and fans documenting their ticket-buying preparations. Many shared photos of multiple devices running simultaneously, hoping to improve their odds in what quickly became a highly competitive race.
Some fans admitted they felt both excited and anxious as they waited for hours to reach the purchasing page, while others jokingly urged fellow ARMY members to &ldquo;calm down&rdquo; as the queue continued growing.

The excitement wasn't confined to homes and offices.
Across the country, groups of fans gathered at cyber caf&eacute;s, turning them into makeshift BTS ticketing headquarters. Videos shared online showed rows of fans seated in front of computers, carefully monitoring queue numbers while waiting for access to the ticketing system.
Some cyber caf&eacute;s reportedly reached full capacity as fans sought stable internet connections and access to multiple computers. Others who arrived too late were forced to continue their ticket-buying attempts elsewhere after finding the venues packed.
The scenes highlighted the dedication of Malaysian ARMYs, many of whom have waited years for BTS&rsquo; return to local shores.

Despite being scheduled to run until late evening, the ARMY Membership Presale sold out completely within five hours.
By around 4pm, concert promoter Live Nation Malaysia confirmed that all allocated tickets had been snapped up, leaving many fans disappointed but hopeful for the next sales phase.
Among the successful buyers was a fan who said he had waited more than four hours before finally securing his tickets. Having followed BTS since 2019, he described the experience as unlike any previous concert ticket purchase.
Another fan revealed she had already prepared backup plans to travel to neighbouring countries such as Thailand if she failed to obtain tickets for the Kuala Lumpur shows.
The intense demand continued during the Live Nation Presale, where queue numbers once again exceeded one million users before available allocations were sold out.
Hotels Near Bukit Jalil Seeing Increased Demand
The excitement surrounding BTS&rsquo; return is already having an impact beyond the concert venue.
Several hotels near Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil have reported a noticeable increase in bookings following the announcement of ticket sales. Accommodation providers said many fans were eager to secure rooms close to the venue for convenience during the concert weekend.
Travel platform Trip.com has also introduced special packages combining concert tickets with hotel stays, providing fans with another way to attend the highly anticipated shows.
Scalpers Face Crackdown

As with many major concerts, ticket resellers quickly emerged shortly after sales began.
Listings appeared on online marketplaces and social media platforms within hours, with some tickets being offered at significantly inflated prices. Certain VIP packages were reportedly listed for more than double their original value.
In response, official ticketing platform GoLive Asia issued a warning, stating that tickets linked to suspicious, fraudulent or prohibited activities could be cancelled without prior notice.
The company also confirmed that any voided tickets would be returned to the ticketing system, potentially giving genuine fans another chance to purchase them.
Final Chance For Fans

For those who missed out during the presales, there is still one final opportunity.
Due to overwhelming demand, organisers have announced the addition of Restricted View (RV) seats for both concert dates. These seats, along with any remaining inventory and reclaimed tickets, are being made available during the general on-sale.
BTS World Tour ARIRANG in Kuala Lumpur will take place on 12 and 13 December at Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, with ticket prices ranging from RM338 to RM1,288.
Featuring RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, BTS is currently on the North American leg of its world tour after launching the highly anticipated comeback tour in South Korea earlier this year.

BTS Ticket Frenzy Sweeps Malaysia As Millions Join Online Queues For Kuala Lumpur Concerts

A 45-year-old woman and three family members who acted as her guarantors have been ordered to repay RM857,000 in education loans to MARA, after the Sungai Petani High Court dismissed their appeal against an earlier Sessions Court ruling.
The decision comes as Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) continues to intensify efforts to recover unpaid loans, with the agency recently reiterating that it will not compromise with borrowers who deliberately default on repayments.
High Court Upholds MARA&rsquo;s Claim

Judicial Commissioner Darmafikri Abu Adam ruled that there was no merit in the appeal filed by Siti Norbaya Ahmad Nor and her three guarantors &mdash; Siti Zaliha Ahmad Nor, Siti Farhana Ahmad Nor, and Jamilah Long.
In a written judgment released last week, the court found that the Sessions Court's findings were supported by evidence and did not contain any significant errors that warranted intervention.
The appellants were also ordered to pay RM10,000 in legal costs.
A key argument raised by the appellants was that MARA's recovery action should be barred under the Limitation Act 1953, particularly concerning a loan agreement signed in 2011. However, the High Court rejected this argument, ruling that MARA had acted within the legally prescribed timeframe.
According to the court, MARA had exercised its contractual discretion to defer repayment obligations while Siti Norbaya continued her studies under a subsequent sponsorship arrangement, meaning the lawsuit filed in 2022 remained valid.
From Manchester Master's Degree To Cambridge PhD

Court documents revealed that Siti Norbaya first received financial assistance from MARA in 2011 to pursue a Master's degree at the prestigious University of Manchester.
Two years later, she secured a second MARA loan to undertake a PhD programme at the renowned University of Cambridge.
Her three family members signed both agreements as guarantors, making them legally responsible should she fail to fulfil the terms of the loan.
MARA later initiated legal proceedings after alleging that she had failed to repay the accumulated debt.
Failure To Complete PhD Led To Breach Of Contract

A major issue before the court was whether Siti Norbaya had complied with the conditions attached to her doctoral sponsorship.
The court noted that Clause 4.6 of MARA's 2013 offer letter and Clause 3.1(a) of the accompanying loan agreement clearly required her to complete her PhD studies within four years.
In a letter dated 15 February 2017, Siti Norbaya acknowledged that she was unable to complete her doctorate within the original sponsorship period. MARA subsequently granted her an extension until August 2017.
However, despite the additional time, she still failed to complete the programme.
The court ruled that her inability to finish the PhD within the extended period of four years and seven months constituted a clear breach of contract.
As a result, MARA became entitled to invoke Clause 3.5 of the agreement, allowing it to demand repayment of the entire loan amount.
University Status Did Not Affect MARA&rsquo;s Rights

During the proceedings, Siti Norbaya argued that she had obtained a "reinstatement" status from the university.
However, the court held that any internal academic decisions made by the university had no bearing on MARA's contractual rights.
Judicial Commissioner Darmafikri stressed that the intentions of both parties had been clearly outlined in the loan agreement from the beginning and could not be reinterpreted later to avoid repayment obligations.
The court further noted that, as of the trial date, Siti Norbaya had still not completed her PhD studies.
MARA Maintains Tough Stance On Defaulters

The ruling comes amid MARA's broader push to recover outstanding loans and strengthen financial discipline within the agency.
MARA chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki recently revealed that the agency's non-performing loans (NPLs) reached RM893 million in 2024, representing 49.6 per cent of its loan portfolio.
According to him, 97,866 out of 197,348 active borrowers had been blacklisted as of October 2024 after failing to service their loans for at least three months. Asyraf stressed that MARA funds are public trust funds and not private money, adding that every sen recovered can be channelled towards helping future students and entrepreneurs.
He also stated that MARA would not entertain requests for exemptions, even if they came through influential individuals or prominent figures. The chairman described legal action against deliberate defaulters as part of MARA's ongoing transformation agenda, aimed at ensuring accountability and protecting public funds.
A Reminder For Borrowers And Guarantors
The case also highlights the significant responsibilities carried not only by borrowers but also by guarantors who agree to back education loans.
By signing the agreements, the guarantors became jointly liable for the debt when the borrower failed to fulfil the conditions of the sponsorship programme.
With the High Court now affirming the Sessions Court's decision, Siti Norbaya and her three guarantors remain liable to repay the RM857,000 loan amount, in addition to the RM10,000 legal costs awarded by the court.
