Malaysians who rely heavily on their vehicles have some good news as the government has restored the monthly BUDI95 subsidised RON95 quota to 300 litres, effective 1 September 2026.
The increase reverses the temporary reduction from 300 litres to 200 litres introduced in April. At the same time, eligible private diesel-powered pick-up and jeep owners can now receive up to 400 litres of subsidised diesel per month.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the changes during his National Day address on 30 August, saying the government was acting ahead of Budget 2027 because cost-of-living pressures could not wait until October. The Finance Ministry subsequently confirmed that the revised quotas would be implemented automatically for eligible existing recipients.
BUDI95 Quota Returns To 300 Litres

Under BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95), eligible Malaysians can purchase subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre.
From 1 September, the basic monthly eligibility limit has increased from 200 litres to 300 litres, essentially restoring the quota that was in place when BUDI95 was first introduced in September 2025.
The government said around 16 million Malaysians benefit from subsidised RON95 under the programme. The adjustment is automatic for existing eligible BUDI95 recipients, meaning they do not need to submit a new application simply because the quota has increased.
The original reduction to 200 litres took effect on 1 April 2026 as the government responded to higher global crude oil prices and increased subsidy costs.
Why Was The Quota Reduced In The First Place?

The 200-litre limit was introduced as a temporary measure amid significant pressure on the government's fuel subsidy bill.
At the time, the government said the adjustment was necessary as international oil prices rose sharply, increasing the cost of maintaining subsidised fuel. However, the lower quota also prompted complaints from some motorists, particularly those who travel long distances for work, family commitments or business.
With the latest adjustment, the government says it has taken into account the needs of Malaysians who rely heavily on their vehicles, including those travelling long distances and small traders who depend on vehicles for their livelihoods.
The Finance Ministry also said the restoration was made possible by better fuel supply management, stronger enforcement, improved economic performance and the government's current financial capacity.
BUDI Diesel Quota Can Go Up To 400 Litres

There is also an increase for eligible diesel vehicle owners.
The basic BUDI Diesel monthly entitlement has been restored to 300 litres, with subsidised diesel remaining at RM2.10 per litre.
Eligible owners of private diesel-powered pick-up trucks and jeeps can apply for an additional 100 litres, bringing their total monthly entitlement to up to 400 litres.
More than half a million eligible diesel vehicle owners can apply for the additional allocation.
Those who were already approved for the extra 100 litres do not need to apply again, as their entitlement will be automatically adjusted to 400 litres from 1 September. Those who have not applied can submit their application through the BUDI MADANI portal.
No Need To Reapply For The Basic Increase
For existing BUDI95 and BUDI Diesel recipients, the return to the higher basic quota is automatic, subject to their existing eligibility.
This means eligible BUDI95 users will receive the revised 300-litre monthly limit, while eligible BUDI Diesel recipients will receive the applicable revised allocation without having to restart the application process.
For pick-up and jeep owners seeking the additional 100 litres under BUDI Diesel, a separate application is still required unless they have already received approval previously.
Government Says Subsidies Must Still Be Protected From Misuse

Despite increasing the quotas, the government said it would continue strengthening measures to prevent subsidy leakage, smuggling and misuse.
BUDI95 was originally designed as a targeted fuel subsidy system, with eligibility tied to Malaysian citizenship and driving licence information.
When the programme was launched, the government said the 300-litre ceiling was already sufficient for the overwhelming majority of private motorists, based on national vehicle usage data.
The latest restoration therefore does not represent a return to an unrestricted blanket petrol subsidy.
What Malaysians Need To Know
For eligible motorists, the changes from 1 September 2026 are straightforward:
BUDI95: Up to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 per month at RM1.99 per litre.
BUDI Diesel: Up to 300 litres per month at RM2.10 per litre for eligible recipients.
Private diesel pick-up and jeep owners: Up to 400 litres per month with the additional 100-litre allocation, subject to eligibility and application requirements.
Anwar has positioned the move as an immediate measure to help ease cost-of-living pressures before Budget 2027, which is due to be tabled in October.

Malaysians looking to experience Formula 1 from behind the scenes can now apply to volunteer at the 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from 2 to 4 October 2026. Organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) together with the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN), the initiative is offering 500 volunteer positions for the F1 event.
Applications opened on 2 September 2026, giving local youths and motorsports enthusiasts the chance to gain hands-on experience at one of the biggest international sporting events to be held in Malaysia this year.
What Will F1 Volunteers Be Doing?

Selected volunteers will work under JBSN through the Rakan Muda Volunteer Programme and will be assigned to several areas around the circuit.

Volunteers will be involved in assisting spectators, managing entrances, interacting with local and international visitors and supporting the overall operation of the event.
For young Malaysians interested in motorsports, event management, hospitality, customer service or sports, the programme offers an opportunity to gain practical experience while contributing to a major international event.
KBS said the initiative is also intended to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership and volunteerism, while giving participants an insight into how a large-scale sporting event is managed.
Who Can Apply For The F1 Volunteer Programme?

The opportunity is open to Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above.
Applicants must be physically fit and in good health, while also demonstrating discipline, integrity, teamwork and good communication skills. Knowledge of foreign languages is considered an added advantage, particularly given the international nature of the event.
KBS has encouraged Malaysians, especially young people and students who may not normally have the opportunity to visit Sepang International Circuit, to take advantage of the programme.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari described the initiative as a chance for Malaysians to experience the F1 event as more than spectators by becoming part of the team helping to deliver it.
Only 500 F1 Volunteer Slots Are Available

While applications are open to Malaysians nationwide, there is a limit to the number of people who will be selected for the F1 event.
The first 500 successful applicants will be assigned to the F1 Grand Prix. Another 500 volunteer positions are also being made available for the MotoGP event taking place at Sepang later in October.
According to the ministry, registration will close once 1,000 applications have been received or on 9 September 2026, whichever comes first.
This means those interested in joining the F1 volunteer team may want to submit their applications early, as the available places could fill before the official closing date.
Applications Faced Technical Issues

The high level of interest also caused some problems with the online registration system.
JBSN said the MyProfil application platform experienced technical difficulties after receiving an unusually high volume of traffic shortly after applications opened on 2 September.
The department said immediate technical action was taken to restore the system and advised applicants experiencing problems to try accessing the platform again from time to time.
JBSN also apologised for the inconvenience and thanked Malaysians for their strong interest in the volunteer programme.
Accommodation And Transport Are Not Provided

Potential applicants should also take note of an important consideration before signing up.
Accommodation and transport will not be provided as part of the volunteer programme. Selected volunteers will therefore need to arrange and cover their own travel and accommodation expenses for the duration of the F1 event.
Those travelling from outside the Klang Valley may need to factor these additional costs into their plans before applying.

Sirajuddin also said JAKIM and the state authorities would not compromise with efforts that, in their view, sought to normalise conduct contrary to the religious values outlined in their statement.

TikTok could be taking its financial services push a step further by allowing users to send money directly through direct messages, potentially turning private chats into another way to make payments.
References to the feature were reportedly discovered in the code of TikTok&rsquo;s US iPhone app. However, TikTok has stressed that the feature is not currently being tested in any market, meaning it remains an early-stage project and may never be released.
How Would TikTok Payments Through DMs Work?

According to reports, the proposed feature would allow users to send payments directly inside an existing TikTok conversation.
The recipient could reportedly &ldquo;tap to accept&rdquo; the incoming payment before a set expiry date, while the sender would receive updates on the transaction through push notifications or their TikTok inbox. There also appear to be references to users being able to attach a message or note to a payment, similar to the way users can add captions to transactions on services such as Venmo.
The idea would make sending money feel much like sending a normal TikTok message, potentially removing the need to switch to a separate banking or payment application. For example, users could potentially send money to friends after discussing a purchase, pay someone they met through the platform or transfer money to a creator &mdash; all without leaving TikTok.
TikTok Pay Could Power The Feature

The reported peer-to-peer payment system could be powered by TikTok Pay, ByteDance&rsquo;s existing payment service.
TikTok Pay is currently available in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, where it is used for transactions through TikTok Shop. A peer-to-peer payment feature would represent a significant expansion of TikTok Pay, moving it beyond payments to merchants and towards direct transfers between individual users.
ByteDance has already explored similar ideas in China. Its Chinese platform, Douyin, has supported peer-to-peer payments through Douyin Pay, allowing users to make purchases, pay during livestream shopping and send tips.
TikTok Is Moving Further Into Financial Services

The reported feature fits into TikTok parent company ByteDance&rsquo;s wider push into financial technology and social commerce.
TikTok is no longer simply a platform for short-form videos. Users can already shop through TikTok Shop, purchase digital coins, send virtual gifts to creators and interact with businesses directly through the app. A direct payment system could allow TikTok to keep even more of those transactions within its own ecosystem.
According to Sensor Tower data cited in reports, consumers worldwide have spent more than US$2.9 billion (around RM12.3 billion) on TikTok so far this year. The platform has also reportedly remained the world's leading app for in-app purchase revenue since 2022.
With such a large amount of spending already taking place on TikTok, adding peer-to-peer payments could provide another way for the company to connect its social, entertainment and commerce services.
Could TikTok Challenge Venmo And Other Payment Apps?

A built-in payment feature could put TikTok into more direct competition with established services such as Venmo and Zelle in the US.
However, TikTok would have one major advantage: it already has a huge audience. Instead of convincing users to download another financial app, TikTok could place payment functionality directly into an application they already use to communicate, watch content and shop.
This could be particularly useful for creators and sellers. Users already share payment details such as Venmo or Cash App usernames through TikTok profiles, so an integrated system could potentially eliminate the need to move transactions elsewhere.

Other social platforms are heading in a similar direction. X has been expanding its X Money service, while Facebook Messenger has offered peer-to-peer payments in the US for years.
The bigger trend appears to be social media companies attempting to evolve into &ldquo;everything apps&rdquo;, where users can communicate, shop and manage financial transactions in one place.
But There Are Privacy And Scam Concerns

Making payments as easy as sending a message could certainly be convenient, but it could also create new challenges.
A payment request appearing inside a familiar conversation could potentially make scams and fraudulent transactions harder for users to spot. Criminals could use hacked accounts, fake profiles or convincing messages to pressure people into sending money.
There are also concerns about younger users. TikTok has a huge teenage and young adult audience, and making payments almost frictionless could potentially encourage impulsive spending or make financial scams easier to execute.
TikTok's existing financial tools have also faced legal scrutiny in the US, with some lawsuits involving allegations related to financial and child exploitation, money transmission laws and money laundering. These cases concern existing features and should not be treated as evidence of problems with a peer-to-peer payment system that does not yet exist.
No Launch Date Has Been Confirmed
For now, TikTok's reported peer-to-peer payment feature should be viewed as a development project rather than an upcoming confirmed feature.
The discovery of code shows that ByteDance is exploring the possibility, but TikTok has said it is not currently being tested in any market.
There are also no confirmed details on potential transaction limits, fees, eligibility requirements, banking partners or whether the feature would launch in Malaysia, the US or other markets.
Still, the idea highlights how TikTok is evolving beyond social media and into commerce and financial services.
For Malaysian users, the more immediate takeaway is that TikTok Pay already exists locally through TikTok Shop. Whether Malaysians will eventually be able to send money to friends simply by opening a TikTok DM, however, remains to be seen.

TikTok Could Soon Let Users Send Money Through Peer-To-Peer Payments In DMs

Shopee users in Malaysia now have another way to pay for their online purchases, with Touch &rsquo;n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) now supported through DuitNow QR.
The addition fulfils a long-standing request from Malaysian shoppers who have wanted to use their TNG eWallet balance directly when checking out on Shopee. However, there is a catch &mdash; TNG eWallet is not available as a direct payment option. Instead, shoppers will need to select DuitNow QR at checkout and complete the payment through the TNG eWallet app.
How To Pay For Shopee Purchases With TNG eWallet

The process is relatively straightforward.
When checking out on Shopee, users can select DuitNow QR as their preferred payment method. Shopee will then generate a QR code for the transaction.
From there, shoppers have two options. They can either save or take a screenshot of the QR code and open it through the TNG eWallet app, or use the app's Universal Scan feature to scan the code directly.
Once scanned, TNG eWallet will display the total payment amount along with Shopee Marketplace as the merchant. Users can then review the details and confirm the transaction to complete their purchase.
While it is not quite the seamless integration some users may have expected, the DuitNow QR option effectively allows TNG eWallet users to pay for Shopee purchases without having to rely on a card or online banking.
Interestingly, Shopee's payment information still lists Touch &rsquo;n Go and Boost as unsupported e-wallet payment methods, meaning DuitNow QR currently serves as the workaround for TNG eWallet users.
TNG eWallet Users Can Also Earn Cashback

The new payment option comes with another potential perk for shoppers.
Eligible users can earn 1% cashback on Shopee purchases through TNG eWallet's Shop &amp; Earn programme, with cashback capped at RM6.67 per order.
To qualify, shoppers need to enter Shopee through the Shop &amp; Earn page in the TNG eWallet app before making their purchase. Simply paying with TNG eWallet through DuitNow QR does not necessarily guarantee cashback if the required Shop &amp; Earn process is not followed.
Cashback is typically tracked within two days and confirmed within 14 days.
However, there are several exclusions shoppers should be aware of.
Which Shopee Purchases Are Not Eligible For Cashback?

According to TNG Digital, cashback does not apply to certain types of purchases and transactions.
These include:

<li>Local services</li>

Shopee LIVE products and streaming-priced items are also excluded, while purchases made using promo codes or vouchers that are not featured on the Shop &amp; Earn platform may not qualify.
Additional charges such as fees, taxes, service charges, shipping and delivery costs are also excluded from the cashback calculation.
As such, shoppers should check the Shop &amp; Earn terms before making a purchase if they are specifically shopping to earn cashback.
What Other Payment Methods Does Shopee Malaysia Support?

The addition of DuitNow QR gives Shopee users another payment option alongside its existing methods.
Shopee Malaysia currently supports payment methods including SPay, credit and debit cards, online banking, Google Pay, Apple Pay, cash-on-delivery (COD) and cash payments at selected physical payment locations.
For online banking, shoppers can choose from numerous participating banks, including Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Public Bank, Hong Leong Bank, HSBC, Bank Islam, Bank Rakyat, OCBC and UOB, among others.
Eligible shoppers can also access instalment plans through selected credit cards, while Shopee's SPayLater service provides a buy-now-pay-later option for users who meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
A Step Towards More Flexible Digital Payments
Although TNG eWallet has not been added as a standalone payment option on Shopee, its integration through DuitNow QR gives Malaysian shoppers more flexibility at checkout.
It also highlights how DuitNow QR is increasingly becoming a bridge between different digital payment platforms, allowing users to make payments across participating merchants and services without being tied to a single e-wallet ecosystem.
For regular Shopee shoppers who already keep money in their TNG eWallet, the new option offers another convenient way to pay &mdash; and potentially earn a little cashback along the way.

Content creation has become an increasingly attractive career path, with millions turning to platforms such as YouTube to build audiences, personal brands and, eventually, make money. YouTube now has more than 3 million creators in its Partner Programme (YPP), while Shorts receives more than 200 billion views every day.
But for aspiring creators hoping to earn through advertising, the road to monetisation is about to get tougher.
YouTube Is Doubling The Grind For Ad Revenue

Starting 1 February 2027, new creators applying for YouTube's Partner Programme will need significantly higher viewing figures before they can access advertising and YouTube Premium revenue sharing.
Currently, creators need at least 1,000 subscribers and either:
<ul>
<li>4,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 12 months; or</li>
<li>10 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days.</li>
</ul>
Under the new requirements, those figures will double to:
<ul>
<li>8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous 365 days; or</li>
<li>20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days.</li>
</ul>
The 1,000-subscriber requirement remains unchanged.
The new thresholds will only apply to creators joining YPP for advertising and Premium revenue. Existing YPP members will not be affected by the higher entry requirements.
YouTube said the changes mark its first significant overhaul of the Partner Programme requirements since 2018.
Shorts Creators Face A New Hurdle

The changes will also affect creators already earning from Shorts.
From February 2027, creators will need to maintain at least 10 million qualified Shorts views within a rolling 90-day period to remain eligible for Shorts advertising and subscription revenue sharing.
Those who fall below the threshold will remain in YPP and can continue earning from their long-form videos. Shorts revenue sharing will automatically resume once they cross the 10 million-view mark again.
YouTube said creators already generating significant revenue from Shorts are unlikely to be heavily affected.
Why Is YouTube Raising The Bar?

According to YouTube Vice President of Creator Products Amjad Hanif, the changes are designed to make Shorts revenue more "meaningful" for creators.
With the enormous growth of Shorts, YouTube says it wants to reward creators who consistently drive views, engagement and conversations on the platform.
However, for smaller creators, reaching 20 million Shorts views in 90 days or 8,000 watch hours in a year could make the journey towards ad monetisation considerably harder.
Smaller Creators Still Have Other Options
YouTube is not completely closing the door on smaller channels.
The requirements for Fan Funding and Shopping features will remain unchanged. Creators can still qualify for the lower YPP tier with:

<li>500 subscribers</li>
<li>At least three public uploads within 90 days</li>
<li>Either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the past year or 3 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days</li>
</ul>
This tier does not provide advertising or YouTube Premium revenue, but allows eligible creators to access tools that let fans directly support their work.
YouTube is also planning new incentive programmes for creators who fall below the Shorts threshold, including potential bonuses through YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals and earnings boosts for creators who start or grow trends.
More details are expected to be announced later.
Premium Lite Could Open Another Revenue Stream

Alongside the monetisation changes, YouTube is expanding Premium Lite to all countries where full YouTube Premium is available.
Premium Lite offers uninterrupted viewing of most videos, as well as offline downloads and background playback, although it does not provide the same ad-free experience for YouTube Music.
The subscription will also contribute to a dedicated creator revenue pool. YouTube says 60% of net Premium Lite subscription revenue will go into this pool, compared with 30% for full Premium.
The money is then distributed according to subscriber watch time and views, with creators receiving 55% of allocated revenue from long-form videos and 45% from Shorts.
YouTube also expects to pay creators more in 2027 than it did in 2026.
The Creator Grind Is Getting Real
YouTube's changes reflect just how competitive the creator economy has become. With more than three million creators already in YPP and billions of daily Shorts views, simply going viral may no longer be enough to turn content into a steady income.
For aspiring YouTubers, the message is clear: building a consistent audience and keeping viewers engaged will matter more than ever.
The dream of making "YouTube money" is still alive &mdash; but from 2027, creators may have to grind a lot harder to get there.
