Indonesia has urged Malaysia and Singapore to understand the circumstances behind the worsening transboundary haze, with a senior government official describing the forest and land fires as a natural phenomenon rather than the result of human error. The remarks come as smoke from fires across Sumatra and Kalimantan continues to affect air quality in neighbouring countries, prompting diplomatic discussions and offers of firefighting assistance.
Syahganda Nainggolan, head of Indonesia’s Government Communications Agency (Bakom), acknowledged the concerns raised by both countries but also highlighted Indonesia’s contribution to the region’s environment. His comments came as Malaysia and Singapore stepped up efforts to work with Jakarta to contain the fires, while Indonesian authorities deployed tens of thousands of personnel and aircraft to support firefighting operations.
Indonesia Says Haze Is A Natural Phenomenon

Speaking at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) office in Jakarta on Saturday, 10 October 2026, Syahganda said Indonesia understood the concerns of its neighbours but maintained that the current fires were driven by natural conditions rather than human error.
He called on Malaysia and Singapore to consider the circumstances surrounding the crisis, describing it as a natural phenomenon that was beyond human control.
Syahganda also defended Indonesia’s environmental contribution, pointing to the role its forests play in supplying oxygen to the wider region.
“We don’t just send smoke. When there is no smoke, we send oxygen. The oxygen in Singapore and Malaysia also comes from our forests,” he said, according to reports by Indonesian media.
He added that diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Malaysia remained good despite the haze, and said the Indonesian government continued to communicate with both countries about the fires and its efforts to control them.
However, his remarks come amid growing concern over the impact of the fires on public health, education and daily life across Southeast Asia. While weather conditions can contribute to the spread of wildfires, the extent of the damage and the causes of individual fires remain important considerations in addressing the recurring haze problem.
Malaysia Offers To Send Firefighting Teams To Indonesia

Malaysia has offered to send firefighting personnel to help Indonesia contain the fires, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim raising the worsening haze situation directly with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Anwar subsequently instructed Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to engage with his Indonesian counterpart to discuss the situation and explore ways for both countries to work together.
Mohamad previously said Prabowo had agreed in principle to Malaysia’s offer of assistance. However, the two governments were still discussing operational arrangements, including where Malaysian personnel would be deployed and how they would coordinate with Indonesian teams.
Malaysia hopes the technical discussions can be concluded quickly so that assistance can be sent to affected areas, particularly in Kalimantan, where fires have contributed to the haze affecting neighbouring countries.
Mohamad has warned that Malaysia’s air quality situation had become increasingly serious, with readings in some locations reaching unhealthy levels and approaching the hazardous category.
Anwar has also instructed the Foreign Ministry to contact the ASEAN Secretariat to seek a meeting of regional environment ministers, with the aim of coordinating efforts to tackle transboundary haze.
Indonesia Deploys More Than 60,000 Personnel To Fight Fires

Indonesia has outlined the scale of its response as it continues to battle fires across several provinces.
Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said he had spoken with Mohamad to explain the measures being taken by Indonesian authorities, including the deployment of more than 60,000 personnel and the use of helicopters and aircraft for firefighting and weather-modification operations.
Indonesian authorities have also kept aircraft on standby for water-bombing missions and aerial patrols, supported by ground teams working to contain the fires.
However, the situation remains challenging because of dry weather and limited visibility caused by smoke. Indonesian officials have said rainfall could help ease the situation, although the timing and extent of any improvement remain uncertain.

Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry reported a sharp increase in detected hotspots on 10 October. Its monitoring system recorded 793 hotspots nationwide as of 9.10pm local time, compared with 437 the previous day. The six priority provinces accounted for 421 hotspots, up from 270 a day earlier.
Central Kalimantan recorded the highest number among the listed provinces, with 288 hotspots, followed by South Sumatra with 60 and West Kalimantan with 44. South Kalimantan recorded 28, while Jambi recorded one. No hotspots were reported in Riau in that update.
The ministry warned that daily changes in hotspot numbers should not lead authorities to lower their guard, as fire conditions can change rapidly.
Air quality monitoring based on fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, also indicated unhealthy to very unhealthy conditions in several areas, with pockets of hazardous pollution reported in parts of Kalimantan, Sumatra and Papua.
Indonesia Welcomes Offers Of Help From Malaysia And Singapore

Indonesian officials have welcomed the willingness of Malaysia and Singapore to assist with firefighting efforts, describing the offers as a sign of regional friendship and cooperation.
However, there are still questions about what form of assistance would be most useful on the ground.
Berton Panjaitan, acting spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said firefighting personnel on the ground could be more effective than additional aircraft in certain conditions because smoke had reduced visibility.
He clarified that this was his personal assessment rather than an official request for international assistance, adding that negotiations over foreign support were being handled by other government ministries.
Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry also expressed appreciation for the offers from both neighbours. Spokesman Ristianto Pribadi said the ministry was prepared to support technical coordination within its responsibilities and according to the needs of firefighting operations.

Indonesia’s Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki had earlier said Prabowo had communicated with leaders of friendly countries, including Malaysia and Singapore, about strengthening cooperation to tackle the fires.
Singapore has also offered support. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said she had been in contact with her Indonesian counterpart to express concern and offer assistance where possible.
Singapore’s 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reached 192 in central Singapore at 6pm on 9 October, its highest reading of 2026 at that point and close to the very unhealthy range, which begins at 201.
The worsening air quality also raised concerns about the Singapore Grand Prix, held from 9 to 11 October. Indonesian officials said the priority remained protecting the health and safety of communities in Indonesia and across the region.
Haze Crisis Highlights Need For Regional Cooperation

The recurring haze crisis continues to test cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, particularly as fires in one country can affect air quality, public health and economic activity across national borders.
Malaysia’s offer to send firefighting teams and Singapore’s willingness to provide assistance reflect efforts to address the situation through regional cooperation. However, the effectiveness of these efforts will depend on operational coordination, conditions on the ground and the ability to prevent fires from spreading or recurring.
Indonesia’s authorities have attributed the current difficulties partly to unfavourable weather conditions, while the rise in detected hotspots highlights the need for continued vigilance and effective fire suppression.
As diplomatic discussions continue, the immediate priority remains containing the fires and reducing smoke pollution. Longer-term measures, including forest and peatland protection, effective enforcement and improved fire prevention, will also be important in reducing the risk of similar haze episodes in the future.

Eight years after Crazy Rich Asians became a global box-office hit, the beloved franchise is officially returning with a new television series on HBO. The upcoming eight-episode drama will continue the story following the events of the 2018 romantic comedy, bringing several familiar faces back to explore the glamorous world of Singapore’s ultra-wealthy elite.
The returning cast includes Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng and Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young, Nick’s formidable mother. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, although HBO has yet to announce a release date or confirm where filming will take place.
The announcement marks a new chapter for the franchise after plans for a feature-film sequel remained in development for several years without moving into production.
Original Crazy Rich Asians Cast Reunites

The new HBO series will reunite four major cast members from the original film, allowing audiences to revisit the characters who helped make Crazy Rich Asians a cultural phenomenon.
Wu will return as Rachel Chu, a New York-based economics professor who discovers that her boyfriend, Nick Young, belongs to one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Golding reprises his role as Nick, while Chieng returns as his status-conscious cousin, Eddie Cheng. Yeoh will appear in a recurring capacity as Eleanor Young, whose disapproval of Rachel became one of the original film’s central conflicts.
Other familiar faces, including Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong and Nico Santos, have yet to be confirmed for the television adaptation.
The original film followed Rachel as she travelled to Singapore with Nick to attend his best friend’s wedding. Unprepared for the extravagant lifestyles, complicated family relationships and social expectations surrounding Nick’s family, Rachel found herself navigating a world where wealth and reputation carried considerable influence.
The film ended with Nick proposing to Rachel, setting the stage for the next chapter of their relationship. While HBO has not revealed the new series’ storyline, it is expected to continue exploring the characters and relationships introduced in the film.
Eight Episodes Instead Of A Movie Sequel

Rather than continuing the story through another feature film, the franchise is taking an episodic approach. The eight-episode format will give the creative team more time to develop its characters and explore the wider world established in Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will work alongside Kwan, original film director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, among other executive producers.
Lim described the project as a family reunion, expressing excitement about returning to Kwan’s fictional world.
She also highlighted how the series format would allow the team to explore the characters in greater depth than a single film could. The writers’ room is already working on the project, although specific story details have not yet been announced.
Kwan also welcomed the adaptation, saying that seeing his characters return in a television series would give their stories more room to develop. His original Crazy Rich Asians novel was published in 2013, followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017.
It remains unclear whether the HBO series will directly adapt material from the subsequent novels or introduce an original storyline inspired by the book series.
Jon M. Chu Says Returning Feels Like Coming Home

Chu, who directed the 2018 film and later helmed projects including In the Heights and the Wicked films, celebrated the announcement on social media.
Reflecting on the original movie’s impact, he said it had changed his life and described the cast as one of the most creative and entertaining groups he had worked with. He also expressed excitement about bringing the team together again after watching its members develop their careers over the past eight years.
Chu noted that audiences had continued to embrace the film, from hosting mahjong nights inspired by its scenes to revisiting it as a favourite during flights. He also joked that the announcement finally answered the question he had repeatedly received from fans: when the sequel would arrive.
The reunion brings back much of the creative team responsible for the original film, which helped bring greater visibility to Asian representation in mainstream Hollywood.
A Cultural Milestone Returns To The Screen

Released in 2018, Crazy Rich Asians was widely recognised for featuring an all-Asian principal cast in a major Hollywood studio production, at a time when Asian representation and the issue of whitewashing were prominent topics in the entertainment industry.
The romantic comedy performed strongly at the box office, earning more than US$239 million worldwide against a reported production budget of US$30 million. Its success also helped introduce international audiences to Singapore’s food, architecture, luxury hotels and cultural landmarks, including Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and Newton Food Centre.
Beyond its commercial performance, the film became a significant moment for Asian audiences who rarely saw their communities represented on such a scale in Hollywood romantic comedies.
With the upcoming HBO series, the franchise will have an opportunity to revisit its characters while expanding the stories and relationships that made the original film popular.
For now, fans will have to wait for further announcements regarding the plot, additional cast members and premiere date. With production expected to begin in 2027, the return of Crazy Rich Asians promises a longer look at the romance, family drama and extravagant lifestyles of the Young family.

Crazy Rich Asians Returns With Eight-Episode HBO Series, Reuniting Original Cast

Anthropic has launched OSS Scanner, a free, opt-in AI-powered vulnerability scanner designed to help open-source developers identify security weaknesses before attackers can exploit them. The service uses the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence models, including Claude Mythos, to conduct periodic security scans and deliver reports directly to participating project maintainers.
The launch comes as AI tools become increasingly capable of detecting software vulnerabilities, creating new opportunities for cybersecurity teams while raising concerns about how quickly attackers could exploit similar capabilities. Although OSS Scanner aims to help developers identify flaws sooner, its reports are generated entirely by AI without human review or verification.
How Anthropic’s OSS Scanner Works

Inspired by Google’s OSS-Fuzz, which helps identify vulnerabilities through automated software testing, OSS Scanner provides security scans to eligible open-source projects at no cost.
Participating developers can receive reports containing explanations of potential vulnerabilities, reproducible examples to help verify findings, information about when bugs may have been introduced and proposed patches where available. This could help maintainers investigate weaknesses and release fixes before they are exploited.
The service builds on Anthropic’s experience using AI to identify software vulnerabilities through Project Glasswing. Over the past six months, the company said its models have identified more than 29,000 potential vulnerabilities across important software projects. However, its teams have only been able to manually review and triage around 6,000 findings, highlighting the difficulty of verifying security reports at scale.
OSS Scanner aims to reduce this bottleneck by allowing developers to receive potential vulnerability reports as soon as they are generated, rather than waiting for manual verification.
AI Reports May Still Contain Errors

Despite the benefits of faster scanning, Anthropic acknowledges that reports generated without human review may be inaccurate, duplicate known vulnerabilities or misinterpret a project’s security requirements.
To evaluate an early version of OSS Scanner, the company asked specialist penetration testers to examine 97 critical- and high-severity findings across 48 projects. Anthropic reported that 85 findings, or approximately 88%, met its standards for its coordinated vulnerability disclosure (CVD) process.
Of the remaining 12 findings, 11 involved genuine issues that duplicated known vulnerabilities or other findings, while only one was considered invalid. Although the results suggest that the scanner can produce useful reports, they do not guarantee that every future finding will be accurate.
Anthropic said it would continue improving the system based on feedback from maintainers. It also acknowledged that severity ratings can sometimes be overstated or that reports may not account for a project’s specific security model.
The company will maintain its existing CVD process, through which vulnerabilities are manually verified before disclosure. For OSS Scanner’s initial unverified reports, Anthropic does not intend to impose a standard 90-day disclosure deadline. However, if a finding is subsequently verified by a human through its CVD programme, the company may apply its disclosure policy from the date the maintainer is notified of that verification.
Cryptocurrency Projects Among Early Applicants

Interest in OSS Scanner has extended to cryptocurrency projects, where vulnerabilities can potentially expose user funds or disrupt essential network operations.
Early applicants included Nethermind, an Ethereum client developer, and ZEUS, a self-custodial Bitcoin and Lightning wallet. VirtEngine, a decentralised cloud computing marketplace built on the Cosmos SDK, also submitted an application.
These projects highlight how AI-assisted security scanning could help protect software responsible for processing blockchain transactions, managing private keys and supporting cryptocurrency payments. However, submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance, as Anthropic evaluates projects individually.
Its selection criteria consider factors such as a project’s importance to infrastructure and user security, exposure to remote attacks, and the number of users or downstream projects that depend on it.
Interest also extends beyond cryptocurrency, with developers working on AI assistants, machine-learning infrastructure, cloud storage, software development tools and energy-related systems among the wider applicant pool.
How Open-Source Developers Can Apply

Core maintainers of eligible projects can apply by submitting a pull request to the OSS Scanner GitHub repository using the required project template.
Applicants must provide their repository link, an email address for the primary contact and a path to a Dockerfile that prepares the project’s environment, installs dependencies and builds the software. This enables the AI agent to conduct its security audit within a prepared container without internet access.
Optional information includes additional email contacts, a project website, a public GPG key for encrypting report emails and a threat model outlining which parts of the code should be tested and how vulnerabilities should be classified.
Not every project will qualify. Anthropic said its selection criteria are similar to those used by OSS-Fuzz, prioritising projects with a critical impact on infrastructure and user security.
Anthropic Expands Its Cybersecurity Efforts
OSS Scanner is part of Anthropic’s broader cybersecurity initiatives, alongside Project Glasswing and its Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, which aims to support organisations protecting essential systems.
The company has warned that AI could make it cheaper and faster for attackers to discover vulnerabilities, develop exploits and conduct cyber operations. This creates pressure on developers to identify and fix weaknesses before they can be used against their software.
Anthropic believes that continued advances in AI could eventually make it easier to detect bugs before software is released, build more secure systems from the outset and strengthen active cyber defence.
For open-source maintainers, OSS Scanner offers an additional way to identify potential vulnerabilities without paying for security scans. Its long-term value, however, will depend on the accuracy of its reports and how quickly developers can verify findings and implement fixes.
As AI continues to reshape cybersecurity, faster vulnerability detection could give defenders a valuable advantage. Human oversight and careful verification will nevertheless remain essential to ensuring that security issues are addressed accurately and responsibly.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Malaysians were reported killed or injured in a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, 10 October 2026. However, the incident has left several Malaysians stranded as airport operations were suspended and airlines cancelled or diverted flights.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation reported that the attack killed 12 people and injured 309 others, with some of the injured reportedly in critical condition. The victims included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.
The attack is among a series of strikes targeting Saudi Arabia amid escalating fighting involving Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed forces. Further attacks on Saudi airports have since heightened concerns over aviation safety and the potential for the regional conflict to intensify.
Wisma Putra Provides Assistance To Stranded Malaysians

In a statement issued on Sunday, 11 October, the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh was maintaining contact with Malaysians affected by the travel disruptions and providing the necessary consular assistance.
The ministry urged Malaysians living in Saudi Arabia, travelling through the country or planning to visit to remain vigilant and monitor developments through official channels.
Travellers with upcoming flights were advised to verify their flight status directly with their respective airlines before heading to the airport. They were also reminded to prepare for possible delays or cancellations and follow safety instructions issued by Saudi authorities.
Wisma Putra encouraged Malaysians in the country to register and keep their contact details updated through the e-Konsular portal to facilitate communication and access to consular assistance.

Riyadh Airport Hit By Multiple Attacks In One Week

The deadly strike on Saturday was part of a series of attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport over the course of a week.
According to reports, a missile struck the airport complex housing Terminals 3 and 4, which serve domestic flights. The attack caused significant disruption, with footage showing passengers fleeing amid explosions and debris inside the airport.
Saudi authorities reported that the strike killed 12 people and injured more than 300. The incident was described in reports as one of the deadliest attacks on a Gulf Arab country since the Iran war began in March 2026.
However, the violence did not end there. On Sunday, 11 October, another unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 at the Riyadh airport, causing a fire that killed one person and injured 11 others, according to Saudi civil aviation authorities. Saudi air defences also intercepted a cruise missile near the airport.
Authorities subsequently confirmed an attack near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, in eastern Saudi Arabia, where damage assessments and safety inspections were under way.
The repeated attacks have raised concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia’s aviation infrastructure, particularly as the country becomes more directly involved in the escalating conflict in Yemen.
Flights Cancelled As Saudi Airports Suspend Operations

Following the initial attack, Saudi aviation authorities temporarily suspended operations at King Khalid International Airport, forcing airlines to cancel, delay or divert services.
Several international carriers announced disruptions to flights serving Riyadh and other Saudi destinations. Kuwait Airways cancelled flights to and from Riyadh, while Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways also cancelled some services. Other airlines had already suspended selected routes amid growing security concerns.
Flight disruptions were also reported at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam following the subsequent attack there.
The incidents have affected passengers travelling to and from Saudi Arabia, including Malaysians whose journeys have been interrupted. Travellers connecting through the kingdom may also face changes to their itineraries, depending on airline schedules and airport operating conditions.
International travel advisories have also been updated. British authorities advised against all but essential travel to several Saudi cities and urged caution around airports, while US aviation authorities warned airlines to exercise caution when operating to or over the kingdom.
Given the evolving security situation, Malaysians with upcoming travel plans are advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest information rather than relying solely on previously issued flight schedules.
Anwar Ibrahim Condemns Attack And Expresses Solidarity With Saudi Arabia

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim strongly condemned the attack, expressing condolences to the families of those killed and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
He stressed that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure could not be justified, warning that such incidents would deepen the suffering caused by the wider conflict.
Anwar also reaffirmed Malaysia’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its people during the difficult period, while expressing hope that diplomacy and reason would prevail to prevent further escalation.
The attack has drawn international condemnation as concerns grow over the potential expansion of the conflict and its consequences for civilian safety, regional stability and international transport.
Escalating Yemen Conflict Raises Wider Security Concerns

The attacks on Saudi airports come as fighting between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces intensifies.
The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the Saturday attack on Riyadh airport and have issued warnings against using Saudi airports and airspace. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has continued military operations against the group in Yemen, including airstrikes and support for government forces attempting to regain territory.
Saudi authorities have also reported intercepting missiles and drones in several areas, highlighting the wider security risks posed by the escalating hostilities.
The situation has prompted concerns among Saudi Arabia’s allies over the country’s air defence capabilities and the potential need for additional military support. US President Donald Trump has said Washington is considering whether to become more directly involved in Saudi operations against the Houthis.
The conflict also threatens important regional transport and energy routes, including shipping corridors near the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Further escalation could have implications for international trade, aviation and energy markets.
What Malaysians Travelling To Saudi Arabia Should Know
For Malaysians currently in Saudi Arabia or planning to travel there, the Foreign Ministry’s advice remains to stay alert, monitor official announcements and confirm flight arrangements directly with airlines.
Passengers should avoid travelling to the airport until they have checked whether their flights are operating, particularly while airport closures and schedule changes remain possible. Malaysians who are stranded or require assistance should contact the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh and ensure their contact details are updated through e-Konsular.
Although no Malaysian casualties have been reported from the attacks, the continuing security situation means travellers should remain prepared for further disruptions.
Wisma Putra is monitoring developments and coordinating consular support as the situation unfolds, while Malaysia continues to express solidarity with Saudi Arabia following the loss of civilian lives.

No Malaysians Injured In Deadly Riyadh Airport Attack As Flights Face Disruptions

Schools across several parts of Malaysia are closing as worsening haze and unhealthy air quality raise concerns over the health and safety of students, teachers and other education staff.
The Education Ministry (KPM) has introduced new guidelines requiring schools and educational institutions under its administration to close when air pollution reaches specified levels. The directive follows growing concern over the impact of the haze, including calls from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim for the authorities to prioritise the well-being of schoolchildren and education personnel.
Under the latest measures, schools in areas recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) above 180 must close, while schools in areas where readings remain above 150 for three consecutive days must also suspend physical classes.
Affected schools are required to implement Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) to ensure students can continue their education during the closures.
Which States Are Closing Schools Due To The Haze?

As of 9 October 2026, school closures have been announced across several states and federal territories in response to deteriorating air quality.
The affected areas include:

Johor: All 1,198 schools were ordered to close on 8 and 9 October, affecting approximately 617,258 students.

Selangor: Schools and educational institutions under the Education Ministry have been ordered to close from 9 October until further notice.

Melaka: Schools under the Education Ministry are closed from 9 October, with religious schools and kindergartens also included in the state’s announced closures.

Negeri Sembilan: Schools under the Education Ministry have been ordered to close from 9 October following unhealthy API readings in several districts.

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya: Schools under the Education Ministry are closed on 9 October due to the worsening haze.

Pahang: The closure applies to schools in Rompin, rather than the entire state.

The Education Ministry has stated that schools in Perlis, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will continue operating as usual under the arrangements announced on 8 October. However, the situation may change if air quality deteriorates further.
Parents and guardians should check the latest announcements from their schools and the relevant state and district education departments, as closure arrangements and reopening dates may differ by location.
Education Ministry Introduces New API Closure Thresholds

The Education Ministry's latest directive establishes two main conditions for school closures.
First, schools and educational institutions in areas where the API reading exceeds 180 must close from 9 October. Second, schools in areas where the API remains above 150 for three consecutive days must close from 12 October.
The rules are intended to reduce students' and school staff's exposure to polluted air, particularly when haze conditions persist or become more severe.
The measures follow Sultan Ibrahim's expressed concern over the deteriorating situation and the need to protect students and education workers.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has also directed state education departments and district education offices to continue monitoring air quality and take immediate action when necessary.
The ministry has acknowledged that sudden school closures can disrupt parents' daily routines and said it would work towards communicating decisions earlier to give families more time to make arrangements.
What Happens To Classes During School Closures?

Schools affected by the haze closures must conduct Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) to minimise disruption to students' education.
The ministry has instructed schools to select suitable learning methods based on students' access to learning resources, individual needs and abilities, as well as teachers' preparedness.
Teachers and members of the implementation support group may also be allowed to work from home during the closure period, subject to the ministry's instructions and operational requirements.
In Johor, assessments under the Year 4 Learning Matrix (MPT4), along with other affected assessments, will be postponed and rescheduled.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to follow official school communications and education department announcements rather than assume that schools will reopen on a particular date.
Haze Raises Health Concerns For Students

The latest closures come as unhealthy air quality readings are recorded in multiple locations across the country.
In Selangor, monitoring stations reported unhealthy readings in areas including Johan Setia, Shah Alam, Banting, Petaling Jaya and Klang on the night of 8 October. Negeri Sembilan and Johor have also experienced elevated readings, prompting school closures in affected areas.
Malaysia's API is categorised into several levels:

0–50: Good

51–100: Moderate

101–200: Unhealthy

201–300: Very unhealthy

301 and above: Hazardous

As haze conditions can change throughout the day, residents should monitor the latest readings and follow official health and safety advice.
Parents are also advised to keep children hydrated, limit outdoor activities during periods of poor air quality and watch for symptoms such as coughing, a sore throat or shortness of breath. Medical attention should be sought promptly if a child experiences concerning symptoms.
Parents Advised To Follow Official Reopening Updates
With school closures now affecting multiple states and federal territories, the Education Ministry and state education departments are continuing to monitor the haze situation.
For families, the key takeaway is that school closures may be extended if air quality remains unhealthy, particularly in areas that meet the ministry's API thresholds.
Parents should refer to announcements from their schools, state education departments and district education offices for the latest information on closures, PdPR arrangements and reopening dates.
The priority remains protecting students and school staff while ensuring learning can continue as safely and smoothly as possible until conditions improve.

Haze Forces School Closures Across Malaysia As Education Ministry Sets New API Rules

Putrajaya has introduced a new way to get around the administrative capital, with an autonomous electric bus now carrying passengers for just RM1 per trip.
The new service officially began operations on 7 October 2026, operating under Putrajaya's Nadiputra public bus network. The autonomous electric bus serves Route P113, connecting MRT Putrajaya Sentral with several key government and administrative locations before returning to the MRT station.
The service is operated in collaboration with Handal Indah and Malaysian autonomous driving technology company eMooVit Technology, giving members of the public an opportunity to experience self-driving electric public transport as part of an actual passenger service.
Where Does The Putrajaya Autonomous Bus Go?

The P113 autonomous electric bus operates as a loop, beginning and ending at MRT Putrajaya Sentral.
The route covers six stops:

MRT Putrajaya Sentral

Kementerian Kewangan (Ministry of Finance)

Istana Kehakiman (Palace of Justice)

Kementerian Belia & Sukan (Ministry of Youth and Sports)

Dataran Gemilang

Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPJ)

After stopping at Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya, the bus returns to MRT Putrajaya Sentral.
This makes the service particularly useful for passengers travelling between the MRT station and several major government offices and administrative hubs in Putrajaya.
Unlike previous autonomous vehicle demonstrations, the new service is now operating on a public transport route and carrying passengers as part of its operations.
When Does The Autonomous Bus Operate?

The P113 autonomous bus does not operate continuously throughout the day. It currently runs from Monday to Friday, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Departures from MRT Putrajaya Sentral are scheduled at the following times:
Morning

7.15am

8.15am

9.15am

10.15am

Afternoon

2.45pm

3.45pm

4.45pm

5.45pm

Passengers should also take note that the published departure and arrival times are subject to prevailing traffic conditions.
With a significant gap between the morning and afternoon services, passengers planning to try the autonomous bus should check the timetable before heading to Putrajaya Sentral rather than expecting the bus to operate throughout the day.
How Much Does The Putrajaya Autonomous Bus Cost?

The fare is RM1 per one-way trip, making it an affordable option for anyone who wants to experience the new autonomous public transport service.
However, passengers should pay attention to the available payment methods before boarding.
The official service announcement specifies cashless payment using Visa and Mastercard debit or credit cards.
At present, Touch 'n Go and My50 are not listed as supported payment methods for the P113 autonomous bus. While this does not necessarily confirm that these options cannot be used, passengers are advised to bring a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card to avoid payment issues.
How Does The Self-Driving Bus Work?

The autonomous electric bus uses a combination of technologies to detect its surroundings and navigate the road.
These include LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors, radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors, which allow the vehicle to monitor its environment and identify objects around it.
eMooVit Technology has previously carried out autonomous bus demonstrations and pilot programmes in locations including Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and the Sunway BRT corridor.
The company has also been developing autonomous electric bus technology for several years, with its vehicles undergoing various testing and demonstration runs before the latest service began carrying passengers.
Although the bus is designed to operate autonomously, it also appears to have provisions for human intervention if required during more serious or unusual situations.
Is The Putrajaya Autonomous Bus A Permanent Service?

It remains unclear whether the P113 autonomous electric bus will become a permanent fixture of Putrajaya's public transport network.
However, official records indicate that Perbadanan Putrajaya previously issued a tender for an autonomous electric bus service with an 18-month duration. The tender was subsequently awarded to Handal Indah, with a final value of approximately RM779,770.
This suggests the current service is part of a longer-term operational trial rather than simply a short demonstration.
The introduction of the P113 route also gives Putrajaya an opportunity to assess how autonomous electric buses perform in real-world public transport conditions, including their reliability, passenger demand and ability to operate alongside regular road traffic.

With fares starting at just RM1, the new Putrajaya autonomous electric bus offers Malaysians a relatively affordable opportunity to experience driverless public transport in a real-world setting.
For now, its limited operating hours mean passengers will need to plan their journey around the scheduled departures. However, the service could provide an important step towards introducing more autonomous and electric public transport in Malaysia, particularly as cities look for cleaner and smarter ways to move people.
