Press Release

Harvest Programme

face mask

KFC Malaysia has contributed 20,000 face masks to support vulnerable and underserved communities across the Klang Valley amid recent air quality concerns, extending its community outreach efforts beyond food assistance.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) and The Lost Food Project (TLFP), aims to provide additional protection to homeless individuals, underserved families and residents of charity homes and People's Housing Programme (PPR) communities.
According to QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, the contribution will be distributed in two phases through its non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners, which collectively reach nearly 8,000 beneficiaries across the Klang Valley.
The initiative reinforces KFC Malaysia's commitment to supporting communities facing daily challenges while building on its existing efforts to improve food security and reduce waste.

The 20,000 face masks were officially handed over to representatives from KSK and TLFP during a ceremony at Menara QSR in Petaling Jaya on 15 October 2026.
The first phase of the initiative involved distributing face masks through the organisations' outreach networks to individuals who need assistance. On 17 October, KFC Malaysia representatives joined volunteers from both NGOs to distribute face masks and KFC meal packs to members of the homeless community at Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan Medan Tuanku in Kuala Lumpur.
Through their respective community programmes, KSK and TLFP support thousands of individuals and families, including residents of charity homes and PPR communities. Their wider outreach networks also enable assistance to reach communities beyond the Klang Valley.
The face mask contribution comes amid concerns over haze and air quality affecting parts of Malaysia, providing additional support to vulnerable groups who may have limited access to essential protective supplies.
KFC Harvest Programme to Continue Distributing Aid

The second phase of the initiative will be incorporated into upcoming activities under the KFC Harvest Programme, the company's food rescue and redistribution initiative.
Through these distributions, beneficiaries at participating charity homes and community centres will receive face masks alongside freshly prepared KFC meals and frozen chicken contributions.
QSR Brands head of governance Sahada Salihin said the initiative reflected the company's belief that its responsibilities extend beyond its food business.
She added that working with established NGO partners would help ensure assistance reaches communities that need it most.
The face mask donation also complements the company's existing community support efforts, allowing KFC Malaysia to provide essential supplies while continuing to address food insecurity among underserved groups.
KFC Harvest Programme Has Redistributed Over 61,000kg of Food

Introduced in Malaysia in 2019, the KFC Harvest Programme was established to rescue surplus food from participating restaurants and redistribute it to underserved communities and charity homes through NGO partners.
The programme has since expanded to cover 170 KFC restaurants nationwide and has redistributed more than 61,000kg of surplus food, benefiting thousands of individuals and families across Malaysia.
By redirecting surplus food to communities in need, the initiative helps minimise food waste while improving access to food for vulnerable groups.
The latest face mask contribution builds on this established network, demonstrating how existing community partnerships can be used to provide assistance beyond meals and food supplies.
KFC Malaysia Reaffirms Commitment to Community Well-Being
Sahada said the company hoped to continue creating a meaningful and lasting impact through its collaboration with KSK and TLFP.
She highlighted the importance of working alongside community organisations to support people facing everyday challenges, adding that the face mask initiative complemented the work already carried out through the KFC Harvest Programme.
Through its latest contribution, KFC Malaysia is extending its community outreach to address immediate needs while continuing its broader efforts to support food security and reduce waste.
With 20,000 face masks set to reach vulnerable communities through its NGO partners, the initiative highlights the role of corporate-community partnerships in delivering practical assistance to those who need it most.

Malaysia is considering a dedicated law to hold companies and individuals responsible for transboundary haze pollution accountable, as worsening air quality and recurring forest fires increase pressure on the government to secure action from Indonesia.
Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia could introduce legislation similar to Singapore’s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014. However, any proposed law would need clear enforcement mechanisms and sufficient evidence to identify those responsible for fires and link them to the haze affecting Malaysia.
The proposal comes as Putrajaya faces criticism, although the government has ruled out formal diplomatic protests or legal proceedings against Jakarta for now.
Evidence Is Key to Enforcing a Haze Law

Syed Ibrahim said there was no legal obstacle to introducing a transboundary haze law, provided it went through the required legislative process and received Parliament’s approval.
However, passing legislation would not automatically make enforcement straightforward. Authorities would need to establish the source of pollution, identify those responsible and demonstrate a connection between specific fires and the haze experienced in Malaysia.
This would require information such as fire coordinates, land ownership records, the companies or individuals operating on affected land, and evidence linking their activities to cross-border pollution. Gathering such information would involve extensive investigations before prosecution could proceed.
Syed Ibrahim said a dedicated law could deter open burning that threatens public health and the environment across national borders.
“Diplomacy must produce measurable action, while enforcement action must be based on evidence and the law,” he told Parliament.
Malaysia Rules Out Formal Action Against Jakarta

The proposal comes amid frustration over haze affecting parts of southern and central Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Selangor and Johor.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia did not intend to pursue legal proceedings or issue a formal diplomatic note against Indonesia, citing the need to preserve bilateral relations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also said the government has exhausted available channels for engaging Jakarta.
Worsening air quality has disrupted daily life, with in-person classes suspended across eight education districts in Selangor, affecting hundreds of thousands of students.
The situation has prompted criticism of Indonesia’s fire containment efforts and ASEAN’s wider response. Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged affected ASEAN countries to coordinate a stronger response, including restricting corporate financing for companies implicated in illegal slash-and-burn practices. Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has also called for Malaysia to take a firmer diplomatic stance.

Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance

Malaysia is continuing to work with Indonesia to tackle forest and land fires at their source.
Syed Ibrahim said Malaysia formally offered assistance on 9 September, including water bombing, amphibious aircraft and cloud seeding. Indonesia has agreed to accept assistance to tackle fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, with deployment arrangements coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and relevant agencies.
Malaysia is also exploring a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia on environmental protection and climate change. Proposed cooperation includes preventing forest and peatland fires, sharing hotspot data, managing high-risk areas and coordinating early intervention.
Malaysia has also proposed a Sustainable Haze Fund under ASEAN to support regional fire prevention, alongside science diplomacy and the bloc’s ambition to achieve a haze-free region by 2030.
During the parliamentary discussion, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid questioned how quickly assistance could be deployed while fires continued, noting that haze can cross borders regardless of whether the fires have been declared a national disaster.
Singapore’s Law Offers a Possible Model

Singapore’s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014 allows legal action against entities whose conduct contributes to haze pollution in Singapore, including when relevant activities take place overseas. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has indicated that Singapore could pursue legal action against companies linked to the fires, while also offering firefighting assistance to Indonesia.
Malaysia would need to ensure its own legislation could be enforced in practice. Investigating activity in another country and proving a link between specific fires and cross-border pollution can be difficult, making reliable evidence essential.
The recurring haze has renewed questions about public health, environmental responsibility and accountability across the region. Malaysia is continuing diplomatic engagement while examining its legislative options, but the key challenge will be ensuring cooperation delivers measurable improvements and that those responsible for harmful burning can be held accountable.

Diplomatic efforts continue, but will stronger legal action finally hold haze polluters accountable?

Malaysia Considers Transboundary Haze Law As Worsening Pollution Raises Pressure for Action

A 16-year-old student was arrested after allegedly attacking a teacher with an axe at Tunku Putra-HELP International School in Kuching, Sarawak, on 21 October, leaving the teacher injured and prompting a police investigation.
The incident occurred at around 8am when the teacher reportedly attempted to confiscate the weapon from the student. Police later confirmed that the weapon involved was an axe or hatchet, contradicting earlier reports circulating online that described it as a penknife.
The case has raised renewed concerns about school safety in Malaysia, particularly following several recent incidents involving serious violence at educational institutions.
Teacher Injured While Attempting to Confiscate Axe

According to the school, the incident took place in its TK4 area on Wednesday morning. The teacher was injured while attempting to intervene and take the weapon from the 16-year-old student.
Police received information about the incident at approximately 8.03am through the MERS 999 emergency line. The teacher was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.
In its statement, Tunku Putra-HELP International School said the teacher was in a stable condition and recovering well, with no critical injuries reported. The victim reportedly sustained a cut to the hand during the incident.
School staff managed to restrain the student and escort him to the principal’s office, where he remained under supervision until the authorities took over the case. The student’s parents were also informed.
The school confirmed that students in the affected classroom managed to evacuate safely and that no other injuries were reported.
Police Investigating Axe Attack and Firecrackers

Acting Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak confirmed that the student had allegedly brought an axe and firecrackers onto the school premises.
The clarification came after conflicting accounts circulated on social media, with some early reports describing the weapon as a penknife. Police subsequently confirmed that the incident involved an axe or hatchet.
Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including how the student brought the items into the school and what led to the confrontation.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon or dangerous object, and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957, relating to the possession of explosives.
The student was later released on police bail, according to subsequent police updates, as investigations continued. Authorities have not yet publicly established the motive behind the incident.
Livestream of Attack Circulates Online

The incident attracted widespread attention after footage allegedly showing the attack began circulating on social media.
Police said the student had livestreamed the incident from his perspective. The recording reportedly lasted approximately 12 minutes and six seconds before being removed from Facebook following action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Authorities have urged the public not to circulate graphic footage or spread unverified claims about the incident. The circulation of such material can cause further distress to those affected and potentially complicate efforts to manage sensitive information surrounding an ongoing investigation.
Members of the public have also been warned against speculating about the student’s identity, family background or alleged motives without verified information.
School Tightens Security After Incident

Following the attack, Tunku Putra-HELP International School closed its premises early on police advice to facilitate investigations. Parents and guardians were notified and asked to arrange for their children to be collected.
The school subsequently confirmed that classes would resume after receiving clearance from the authorities. It has reviewed its existing safety protocols and introduced additional security measures, including the deployment of three auxiliary police officers on campus.
Appropriate security checks will also be conducted on individuals entering the school, while management is considering further measures to strengthen long-term campus safety.
The school said its senior leadership team would hold assemblies to address students’ concerns and arrange counselling support for those who need it. The Sarawak Education Department has also contacted the school and offered assistance to those affected.
Calls for Stronger School Safety Measures

The incident has prompted calls for schools and relevant authorities to review their security arrangements and strengthen efforts to prevent violence.
Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Sarawak chief Azlan Norita described the incident as a serious reminder that the safety of teachers and students must remain a priority. He called for a thorough and transparent investigation, with appropriate action taken in accordance with the law.
Azlan also stressed that preventing similar incidents requires more than physical security measures. He highlighted the importance of students’ emotional wellbeing, mental health, social environment and disciplinary development, alongside the involvement of parents, teachers and counsellors.
The incident comes amid wider concerns about school violence in Malaysia. In October, a 16-year-old student was charged over the death of a schoolmate at SMK Dato' Seth in Yong Peng, Johor. Other cases involving alleged student-on-student violence and bullying have also prompted calls for stronger safeguards in schools.
While each case has its own circumstances, the incidents have intensified public discussion about how educational institutions can better protect students and staff.
As police continue investigating the Kuching school axe attack, attention will remain on establishing what happened and whether further measures are needed to prevent similar incidents. The case also highlights the importance of combining effective campus security with early intervention, student support and a safe environment for everyone in the school community.

K-Pop Duo AKMU Set To Perform In Kuala Lumpur As Part Of 2027 Asia Tour

Malaysia has banned civil servants from using the popular navigation app Waze for official duties, citing concerns over data security, location tracking and national sovereignty. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also encouraged Malaysians to consider switching to TuJu, a locally developed navigation application managed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).
The decision followed the third meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) for 2026, chaired by Anwar on 20 October. The government’s move has sparked renewed debate about digital privacy, the security of location data and whether local alternatives are ready to replace established navigation platforms such as Waze and Google Maps.
Civil Servants Ordered to Stop Using Waze Immediately

According to a circular dated 20 October issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, civil servants have been instructed to stop using Waze with immediate effect.
Ministry secretaries-general, heads of federal departments, statutory bodies, state government secretaries and local authorities have been directed to communicate and enforce the decision among their respective personnel.
The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), under the National Security Council in the Prime Minister’s Department, has been designated as the coordinating agency for questions and requests for clarification regarding the directive.
However, the restriction applies to civil servants, and the government has not announced a nationwide ban on Waze for members of the public. Anwar has instead encouraged Malaysians to consider TuJu as an alternative.
Why Is Malaysia Raising Concerns About Waze?

Anwar said the recommendation was prompted by potential security risks involving users’ personal information and data on their movements. He pointed out that Waze is subject to Israeli laws, raising concerns about how location information could be handled under a foreign legal framework.
Waze was founded in Israel in 2008 before being acquired by Google in 2013. Although it is now owned by the American technology company, Waze Mobile remains associated with Israel and operates under a legal framework linked to the country.
Like other navigation services, Waze can collect information such as location data, routes, destinations, searches and device details, depending on how the app is used and configured. When collected over time, location information can potentially reveal travel routines, frequently visited places and movement patterns.
Such information could raise security concerns, particularly when it involves government personnel or sensitive locations. Nevertheless, NACSA has reportedly acknowledged that there is no evidence Waze has analysed users’ movement patterns for the purposes raised in the discussion.
The government’s position centres on reducing potential exposure and strengthening Malaysia’s control over sensitive information, rather than establishing that Waze has misused its users’ data.
In a statement on social media, Anwar stressed that the security of Malaysians’ personal information and identities could not be compromised as the country continues to expand its digital services.
What Is TuJu, Malaysia’s Local Navigation App?

TuJu is a Malaysian navigation application developed by Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd in November 2025, with the aim of providing motorists with navigation and highway-related information.
The app offers several features designed to assist drivers, including:

Route information, travel distances and estimated arrival times.

Toll fare calculations for journey planning.

Traffic updates and access to highway CCTV snapshots.

Information on rest and service areas (R&R), including available facilities.

Details of nearby petrol stations and emergency assistance.

Options to report road incidents and closures.

TuJu also connects with the MyJalan platform, which allows road users to submit complaints about issues such as potholes and damaged roads.
Its highway-focused functions could be useful for motorists who frequently travel on Malaysian expressways. However, having access to road information is not the same as providing the seamless, reliable navigation experience many drivers expect from established apps.
TuJu Faces Questions Over Navigation Accuracy and Usability

Despite the government’s endorsement, TuJu has faced criticism from users and reviewers who have questioned whether it is ready to replace Waze or Google Maps for everyday driving.
Reported shortcomings include confusing turn-by-turn instructions, limited lane guidance at complicated junctions and inconsistent navigation information. These issues could be particularly problematic around Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, where closely spaced highway exits and interchanges require clear, timely directions.
Other concerns include missing features, differences between its Android and iOS versions, and the lack of support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These omissions may inconvenience drivers who rely on their vehicle’s built-in infotainment system for navigation.
TuJu’s data collection practices have also attracted attention. Users may be required to register or sign in before accessing its navigation features, while its privacy notices describe the collection of location, movement and usage information, among other data.
This has raised questions about how much personal information the app needs to collect and how that information is managed. The government’s promotion of a locally developed alternative does not, by itself, establish that the app collects less data or offers stronger privacy protections than its competitors.
For TuJu to gain wider acceptance, improvements to navigation accuracy, reliability, compatibility and transparency around data handling will be important. Motorists are unlikely to abandon familiar services unless the alternative can meet their everyday needs.
Government Strengthens Wider Cybersecurity Measures

The recommendation to switch navigation apps was one of several cybersecurity matters discussed during the National Cyber Security Committee meeting.
Other topics included the implementation of the Cyber Security Act 2024, the security of MyDigital ID and the protection of National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII).
Anwar also highlighted preparations for future cybersecurity threats posed by quantum computing, including the development of post-quantum cryptography (PQC), alongside emerging risks associated with autonomous artificial intelligence.
The government is also working to strengthen Malaysia’s integrated identity ecosystem, with MyKad serving as a physical credential and MyDigital ID supporting digital transactions. These initiatives are intended to protect personal information as more government services move online.
The broader objective is to improve the country’s digital resilience while ensuring that public services remain secure and reliable.
What Does the Waze Decision Mean for Malaysian Motorists?
For now, civil servants must comply with the directive when carrying out their official duties, while members of the public remain free to choose their preferred navigation apps.
The government’s recommendation places TuJu in the spotlight as Malaysia seeks to strengthen its digital sovereignty and reduce potential security risks associated with foreign technology platforms.
However, the decision also highlights a challenge facing locally developed digital services: earning public trust requires more than domestic ownership. Reliable performance, clear privacy policies and practical features will be essential if TuJu is to become a genuine alternative to Waze and Google Maps.
For Malaysian motorists, the key question is whether TuJu can deliver the accuracy and convenience needed for daily journeys while addressing concerns about data security. Until its reported shortcomings are resolved, its ability to replace more established navigation apps remains uncertain.

A homegrown navigation app is now in the spotlight, but can it deliver the accuracy and convenience Malaysian drivers expect?

Malaysia Bans Civil Servants From Using Waze, Urges Malaysians to Switch to Local TuJu App

Malaysia has recorded its highest-ever score in the Economic Freedom of the World index since it was introduced in 1970, although the country has slipped two places in the global rankings as other economies made faster progress.
According to the Center for Market Education (CME), Malaysia scored 7.57 out of 10 in the Economic Freedom of the World: 2026 Annual Report, improving slightly from 7.55 previously. Despite the record score, Malaysia fell from 33rd to 35th place among 165 countries and jurisdictions assessed.
In a statement issued on Monday, 19 October, the think tank said Malaysia's economic freedom had improved considerably since the beginning of the century. However, it warned that the latest ranking should not be a reason for complacency, particularly as other countries continue to implement reforms at a faster pace.
Malaysia Remains ASEAN's Second-Freest Economy

Despite its decline in the global rankings, Malaysia remains the second-freest economy in ASEAN, trailing only Singapore, which secured third place worldwide with a score of 8.43.
Malaysia continues to rank ahead of several regional economies, including Thailand in 57th place, Brunei and the Philippines in joint 61st place, and Indonesia in 72nd place.
Globally, Hong Kong topped the index with a score of 8.53, followed by Switzerland, Singapore, New Zealand and the United States.
Malaysia's score is also above the regional average of 6.99, indicating that the country's overall economic freedom remains relatively strong compared with its regional counterparts.
Nevertheless, the two-place drop highlights the difference between improving a country's own performance and keeping pace with other economies. Although Malaysia achieved a higher score, other countries made sufficient progress to overtake it in the rankings.
Malaysia's Economic Freedom Has Recovered Since the Asian Financial Crisis

The CME noted that Malaysia has made considerable progress since the economic difficulties experienced during the Asian financial crisis.
According to the report, Malaysia scored 6.99 and ranked 36th in 1995 before its score fell to 6.12 in 2002 following the financial crisis, capital controls and policy disruptions.
The country's position deteriorated further, reaching 97th place in 2009. However, Malaysia has gradually improved its standing since then, reflecting its longer-term progress in economic freedom.
The latest score of 7.57 marks its strongest performance since the index was established, suggesting that Malaysia has made significant gains over the decades despite facing economic and policy challenges along the way.
The improvement also reinforces Malaysia's position as one of Southeast Asia's more economically open economies, although the latest ranking suggests there is still room for further reform.
Government Ownership Remains a Key Concern

CME chief executive officer Dr Carmelo Ferlito said Malaysia's monetary stability and relatively flexible labour market remained important strengths supporting its economic performance.
However, he warned that the government's extensive involvement in commercial activities continued to present a challenge.
According to Ferlito, government-linked companies (GLCs) and state-owned banks account for a substantial state presence in the economy, which he described as among the heaviest in the world.
He also raised concerns about public administration, stating that it had become less impartial since 2019.
While the country's record score is encouraging, Ferlito stressed that Malaysia should not become complacent as other economies continue to advance their economic reforms.
His comments highlight the ongoing debate over the role of government in the economy, particularly the balance between state participation, private-sector competition and market efficiency.
What Malaysia Needs to Do to Reach the Global Top 20

Ferlito said Malaysia would need to pursue further structural reforms if it hopes to break into the world's top 20 economies in the economic freedom rankings.
Among the measures he identified were reducing state ownership in the economy, ensuring that the civil service operates according to clear rules and remains impartial, simplifying the country's tariff structure, and opening markets to greater competition.
Reducing barriers to competition could help create more opportunities for private businesses, while clearer and more impartial public administration could support a more predictable business environment.
Simplifying tariffs could also make trade arrangements easier to navigate, potentially improving market access for businesses and investors.
However, the proposed changes would require sustained policy efforts rather than relying solely on incremental improvements in the country's overall score.
Record Score Shows Progress, But More Reforms Are Needed
Malaysia's latest economic freedom score represents a milestone, reflecting its recovery from the setbacks experienced in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis and its subsequent improvement over the years.
Nevertheless, its fall to 35th place globally serves as a reminder that maintaining competitiveness requires continued progress as other countries strengthen their own economic policies.
With Malaysia still ranked second in ASEAN, the country has a relatively strong regional position. The challenge now is to translate that standing into further improvements in economic openness, market competition and public administration.
As highlighted by CME, reaching the global top 20 will require Malaysia to address the role of state-owned entities, strengthen impartial governance and create greater opportunities for competition.
Whether Malaysia can climb higher in future editions of the index will depend not only on maintaining economic stability, but also on how effectively it implements the reforms needed to keep pace with the rest of the world.

Malaysia Achieves Highest Economic Freedom Score Since 1970, But Slips To 35th Globally

Malaysian kopitiam chain Oriental Kopi has responded to public criticism over its menus, which reportedly feature food descriptions in English and Chinese but do not include Bahasa Malaysia. The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on the use of the national language by local businesses and how Malaysian brands represent the country's multicultural identity.
The issue gained traction on Threads after a user shared a photograph of the restaurant's menu and questioned why Bahasa Malaysia was absent despite Oriental Kopi presenting itself as a proudly Malaysian brand. The post drew widespread attention, with some Malaysians calling for the menu to be updated, while others questioned whether the criticism was being applied consistently to other food and beverage businesses.
Oriental Kopi founder Datuk Calvin Chan Jian Chern has since acknowledged the feedback, apologised for the oversight and confirmed that the company is working on a new menu design that will include Bahasa Malaysia.

Responding to the criticism on Threads, Calvin thanked the public for highlighting the issue and reiterated the company's respect for Bahasa Malaysia as the country's national language.
He also acknowledged that the omission was a shortcoming on the company's part and asked for patience while the team works on improvements.

“As a brand born in Malaysia, we always respect Bahasa Melayu as our national language. We apologise for this shortcoming. We're already in the process of introducing a new menu design that will include Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.
In a separate response, Calvin emphasised that Oriental Kopi welcomes customers from all races and backgrounds. He added that the company remains committed to representing Malaysia through its traditional heritage dishes and thanked the public for giving the brand an opportunity to improve.
The response received positive reactions from some social media users, who welcomed the founder's willingness to acknowledge the feedback and address the concern.
Why Are Malaysians Criticising Oriental Kopi's Menu?

The controversy centres on the absence of Bahasa Malaysia from the descriptions of Oriental Kopi's food items, with screenshots circulating online showing descriptions presented in English and Chinese.
Some Malaysians argued that including the national language should be a basic consideration for a local restaurant, particularly one that celebrates its Malaysian identity. Others expressed disappointment that customers who prefer reading menus in Bahasa Malaysia might not have the same experience as those who are comfortable with English or Chinese.
Some users also called for a boycott until the restaurant introduces the language into its menus, while others urged the company to make the necessary changes rather than allowing the controversy to escalate.
The discussion also gained momentum after Oriental Kopi had shared posts expressing pride in being a Malaysian brand. For some customers, the absence of Bahasa Malaysia appeared inconsistent with that identity.
One customer, who described themselves as a regular at the restaurant, said they enjoyed its food and drinks but believed the menu could better reflect Malaysia's multicultural society.
The comments highlight how language choices can influence public perceptions of a brand, particularly when it comes to businesses that position themselves as part of Malaysia's local food heritage.
Some Malaysians Question Why Oriental Kopi Is Being Singled Out

Despite the criticism, not everyone agreed with the way the issue was raised. Some social media users questioned why Oriental Kopi was receiving particular attention when other food and beverage chains also feature menus primarily in English or use a different combination of languages.
Brands mentioned in the discussion included ZUS Coffee, Tealive, Luck Bros Kopi and Tea Garden, with some users arguing that similar expectations should apply consistently across the industry.
Others maintained that businesses should be encouraged to include Bahasa Malaysia regardless of their ownership, target audience or preferred menu language.
The debate has therefore expanded beyond Oriental Kopi itself, raising broader questions about how Malaysian businesses can balance their branding, customer preferences and the country's linguistic diversity.
While some see the inclusion of Bahasa Malaysia as an important way to recognise the national language, others believe criticism should be directed at business practices rather than focused on a single brand.
What Is Oriental Kopi Doing to Improve Its Menu?

For now, Oriental Kopi has confirmed that a redesigned menu featuring Bahasa Malaysia is in progress, although the company has not announced a specific date for its introduction.
Founded in 2020, Oriental Kopi is known for its Nanyang-style coffee, egg tarts, polo buns and other traditional kopitiam favourites. The brand has expanded across Malaysia, with additional outlets in Singapore, and has built a following among customers from different backgrounds.
Its response suggests that the company intends to address the menu issue while maintaining its identity as a Malaysian food and beverage brand.
The next step will be the introduction of the updated menu and whether the changes meet customers' expectations.
Ultimately, the controversy serves as a reminder that language can play an important role in how local brands connect with their customers. As discussions surrounding Bahasa Malaysia continue, Oriental Kopi's planned menu update could also encourage other businesses to review how their menus reflect the communities they serve.

Cornetto Matcha Strawberry University Roadshow Brings Matcha Fun To Malaysian Campuses

When financial difficulties pushed his company into a deficit, entrepreneur Ade Azhar Ismail found himself with just RM33 left in his savings account.
Rather than give up, he returned to his roots by selling nasi lemak from the boot of his car in Seksyen 9, Shah Alam.
Ade, who has spent almost 16 years as an entrepreneur and previously earned a five-figure income as the CEO of his own distribution company, admitted that returning to roadside selling was not an easy decision.
However, what started as a way to generate an income during a difficult period eventually grew into a new business venture, earning RM9,000 in profit in its first month.
From A 60-Person Team To Just 14 Employees

According to Harian Metro, Ade has never worked a salaried job, having started his business journey through direct selling by selling toys.
In 2009, he became the CEO of his own company, which distributed products including air fresheners, storybooks, children's books, educational reading materials and books on the life of the Prophet.
At its peak, the company had around 60 employees. However, its sales team gradually shrank, with Ade saying only 14 employees remain. Many of those who left were Gen Z workers who were no longer interested in direct selling.
The loss of his sales team, along with several business partners leaving, affected the company's operations and contributed to it running at a deficit from the middle of last year.
Despite the difficulties, the company remains operational. Ade decided not to draw a CEO's salary and instead started selling nasi lemak, using the proceeds as his income while putting the remainder towards the company.
He Initially Felt Embarrassed Selling By The Roadside

Returning to street trading was not easy for someone who had spent years running a company.
Ade admitted that he initially felt embarrassed about facing his siblings, relatives and employees while selling nasi lemak from his car boot.
However, he eventually put those feelings aside after remembering that his own business journey had started with direct selling. Friends and fellow business owners also supported him by visiting his selling spot and buying nasi lemak.
Ade said his family was initially unaware of the difficulties he was experiencing. His wife only found out about his new venture on the 15th day.
Since he sourced the nasi lemak from a distant relative rather than preparing it himself, she did not realise that he had started selling food by the roadside.
Started With Just 30 Packets

Ade's first day began with just 30 packets of nasi lemak.
He recalled feeling discouraged and even like a “loser” before starting, but his confidence grew once customers began buying. By the end of the day, all 30 packets had been sold.
Encouraged by the response, he continued with the business. A video of him selling nasi lemak later went viral on social media, bringing more attention to his venture.
Ade said his first month's profit reached RM9,000. By his 53rd day of selling, he had started recruiting workers and expanded the car-boot business to five additional locations.
Now Selling Up To 1,200 Packets A Day

By the 81st day, Ade and his team were selling as many as 1,200 packets of nasi lemak a day.
The business operates in two shifts, with the first beginning at 8.30am and the second starting at 5pm and continuing until the nasi lemak is sold out.
Roadside trading comes with challenges, from unpredictable weather to keeping up with growing demand. Despite this, Ade said they had sold out every day from the first day through to his 81st day.
Although the work is tiring, he said he enjoys meeting customers, including those who travel from far away to support his business.
“Let Go Of Embarrassment And Ego”
Ade sees the experience as an opportunity to reflect on his past mistakes and make improvements.
For others facing financial or business difficulties, he advised them not to let embarrassment or pride stop them from finding a way forward.
“Let go of embarrassment and ego. Find a way out of your problems,” he said.
Ade also encouraged people to make use of whatever experience and resources they already have instead of being afraid to start again.
“Don't be afraid to start and, God willing, we can rise again and rebuild what we once worked for, even if we have to start from the bottom,” he said.

From RM33 In Savings To RM9,000 Profit: Former CEO Turns To Nasi Lemak To Rebuild His Business

Few Malaysian food brands have built the kind of hype surrounding Khairul Aming’s products. Whenever a new product drops, fans often rush to get their hands on it before it inevitably sells out within minutes.
But with that popularity comes another familiar problem: scalpers.
The issue recently resurfaced on Threads after a user questioned why Sambal Nyet Bilis was being resold for significantly higher prices, prompting Khairul Aming himself to respond.
Khairul Aming’s Products Often Sell Out In Minutes

Khairul Aming has built a reputation for creating products that generate huge demand even before they officially launch.
His latest Sambal Nyet Bilis, for example, reportedly sold out in under two minutes after being released on TikTok. A subsequent restock of 150,000 bottles on Shopee also sold out within minutes.
With demand consistently outstripping supply, it is perhaps unsurprising that some buyers have turned to resellers — and some resellers have taken advantage of the situation by charging more. Beyond the products themselves, Khairul Aming’s launches have also become popular for the experiences and giveaways that come with them.

His previous campaigns have included opportunities for customers to win trips, including a New Zealand holiday, while his latest initiatives have teased another potential getaway to Italy. These giveaways have added another layer of excitement around his product launches, encouraging even more people to participate.
But the popularity of the products has also brought one major headache: scalpers.
Sambal Nyet Allegedly Being Resold For RM25

A recent Threads post highlighted the issue after a user claimed that Sambal Nyet Bilis, originally sold for around RM15.90 per bottle, was being resold for as much as RM25.
The user questioned whether Khairul Aming was aware of the situation or simply chose not to address it. They acknowledged that scalpers will always exist when demand is high, but argued that the situation had gone too far.
The complaint eventually caught Khairul Aming’s attention, leading him to explain why dealing with resellers is not as straightforward as some may think.
“Takkan Saya Nak Pergi Ketuk Pintu Rumah Dia?”

Rather than ignoring the criticism, Khairul Aming responded directly and pointed out the practical limitation faced by any business once a product has already been purchased.
“Sambal tu dah kat tangan dia, apa saya boleh buat. Takkan saya nak pergi ketuk pintu rumah dia. Saya pun tak kenal pun siapa yang jual balik tu.”
He also said he hoped people would understand that he could not control everything that happened once the product had left his hands.
According to the entrepreneur, his response to the criticism was particularly frustrating because it appeared to suggest that he was deliberately allowing scalpers to resell his products at inflated prices.
He stressed that his team was already working hard to produce enough products to meet demand.
He’s Open To Solutions

Interestingly, Khairul Aming did not simply dismiss the criticism.
Instead, he challenged the commenter to suggest a realistic solution that could potentially be implemented. He essentially offered to consider the idea if there was a practical way to prevent or reduce scalping.
That response was welcomed by some netizens, who felt it was unfair to blame Khairul Aming for something that happens after a customer has already completed a legitimate purchase.
Others pointed out that scalping is not unique to Sambal Nyet, with limited-stock and highly sought-after products regularly being resold at higher prices.
The Scalper Problem Is Bigger Than Sambal Nyet

At its core, the issue comes down to supply and demand.
When a product sells out almost immediately, there will always be people willing to pay more to get it without waiting for the next restock.
One way to discourage the practice is simply not to buy from scalpers. If resold products remain unsold at inflated prices, there is less incentive for people to purchase large quantities purely for resale.
For Khairul Aming, the challenge is finding the balance between producing enough Sambal Nyet to meet demand while ensuring that his products remain accessible to genuine customers.
For now, the entrepreneur appears to be listening to the criticism — but as he pointed out, once the sambal is already in someone else’s hands, controlling what happens next is another matter entirely.

Some flavours are more than just something we eat. They can bring back memories of school days, family breakfasts, afternoon tea breaks and snacks shared with friends.
That nostalgia is at the heart of Inside Scoop’s Lokal Legends 2026, which returns this year with its biggest collection yet. The annual campaign brings together nine familiar Malaysian brands and transforms their signature products into limited-edition ice cream flavours.
Launched in conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day celebrations, the campaign celebrates the local brands that have become part of everyday Malaysian life — this time, with a scoopable twist.

From Local Favourites To Ice Cream

Since its introduction in 2024, Lokal Legends has grown into one of Inside Scoop’s most anticipated annual campaigns, with fans often guessing which brands will make the next lineup and sharing their wishlists online.
According to Inside Scoop Co-Founder Edmund Tan, the campaign is about celebrating the brands that have become part of the Malaysian experience.
He said the excitement surrounding each year's reveal reflects the strong connection Malaysians have with homegrown brands — from those they grew up with to those associated with family gatherings and everyday routines.
This year’s partners share a similar sentiment, with each bringing a familiar product and story into an entirely different format. Secret Recipe Group CEO Patrick Sim revealed that the Chocolate Indulgence® collaboration went through 13 different versions before arriving at the final recipe.
ZUS Coffee, meanwhile, is bringing its popular Ube flavour into ice cream after receiving an enthusiastic response to its Ube drinks last year.
A Supermarket Full Of Malaysian Nostalgia

For 2026, Inside Scoop has taken the campaign beyond the flavours themselves with a supermarket-inspired concept.
Supermarkets are a familiar part of everyday Malaysian life, bringing together everything from breakfast staples and snacks to drinks and treats. Inside Scoop has recreated that experience through the Lokal Legends Supermarket, bringing all nine collaborations together under one roof.
For the campaign launch, the Inside Scoop outlet at Galeria SA Sentral was transformed into the themed supermarket. Visitors could explore dedicated brand aisles, learn more about the collaborations and sample the new flavours in an interactive setting.
The concept also gives the campaign a nostalgic feel, connecting the ice cream flavours with the products and brands Malaysians might usually find while doing their weekly grocery shopping.
Get All Nine In One Box

For those who want to try the entire collection, Inside Scoop is also offering a 9-Scoop Party Pack, featuring all nine Lokal Legends flavours in one box.
The set comes with an exclusive Lokal Legends Ice Cream Passport and sticker pack, allowing fans to collect and celebrate each of the nine collaborations.
Whether it is a familiar childhood snack, a kopitiam breakfast staple or a favourite modern drink, the collection gives Malaysians a chance to revisit familiar flavours in a completely different form.
