<p>A recent social media post questioning why babies are counted as part of the diner count at Rembayung has sparked widespread discussion online, prompting restaurant owner and entrepreneur Khairul Aming to explain the reasoning behind the policy.</p>
<p>The issue began when a customer claimed her family encountered difficulties entering the restaurant because her seven-month-old baby was counted as an additional guest. According to the woman, she had booked a table for four adults, but her sister was allegedly not allowed to enter because the baby, who was seated in a baby chair, was also considered one pax.</p>
<p>The post quickly went viral, with some netizens criticising the restaurant&rsquo;s SOP and describing it as unnecessarily strict.</p>
<p><strong>Safety Was The Main Reason Behind The Policy</strong></p>

<p>Responding to the criticism, Khairul Aming clarified that the rule was introduced primarily for safety reasons after months of operating the restaurant.</p>
<p>He explained that when Rembayung first opened, babies were not included in the pax count if parents chose to carry them. However, the situation became more complicated as more families began arriving with strollers and young children.</p>
<p>According to Khairul, the restaurant receives around 1,000 customers daily, making safety a major concern.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This SOP was created to protect babies and children. It was never intended to make things difficult for parents,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p><strong>Limited Space Creates Potential Hazards</strong></p>

<p>Khairul explained that every table at Rembayung is surrounded by walkways used by staff carrying hot dishes and drinks served in glassware.</p>
<p>When strollers are placed along these pathways, they can obstruct movement and increase the risk of accidents. He pointed out that if hot food or drinks were accidentally spilled onto a stroller or child, it could result in serious injuries.</p>
<p>By counting babies as part of the total pax count, the restaurant can remove an adult chair and create dedicated space for a stroller or baby chair without blocking walkways.</p>
<p>The policy, he said, allows the restaurant to maintain a safer environment for both customers and staff.</p>
<p><strong>Why Carried Babies Are Also Counted</strong></p>

<p>Many online users questioned why babies sitting on their parents&rsquo; laps are still counted as one pax.</p>
<p>Khairul said the restaurant previously allowed such flexibility, but it eventually created inconsistencies. Some parents would carry older children, while others requested different exceptions based on age.</p>
<p>He added that children can be unpredictable and may accidentally knock over hot dishes or glassware, creating safety risks not only for themselves but also for surrounding diners.</p>
<p>To avoid confusion and ensure fairness, Rembayung decided that all babies and children, regardless of age, would be counted as part of the reservation.</p>
<p><strong>Previous Flexibility Led To Misunderstandings</strong></p>
<p>Khairul also revealed that Rembayung had previously allowed arrangements where adults dined inside while a family member remained outside with a baby.</p>
<p>However, he said one such incident later resulted in criticism online after claims surfaced that the restaurant had allowed a baby to remain outside in the heat. Although the arrangement had reportedly been the family&rsquo;s own decision, the backlash highlighted how easily situations could be misunderstood.</p>
<p>Following several similar experiences, the restaurant updated its booking terms after Hari Raya Aidilfitri to include all babies and children in the pax count.</p>
<p><strong>&lsquo;The Restaurant Actually Loses Money&rsquo;</strong></p>

<p>Addressing suggestions that the policy was introduced to maximise revenue, Khairul firmly denied the claim.</p>
<p>In fact, he said the rule actually reduces potential earnings because babies do not order meals.</p>
<p>&ldquo;If there are 30 to 50 babies at Rembayung every day, those could have been seats occupied by paying adult customers,&rdquo; he explained.</p>
<p>According to him, the restaurant potentially loses thousands of ringgit in sales by reserving space for babies and young children, but the policy remains in place because safety is the priority.</p>
<p><strong>Consistency Is Important</strong></p>
<p>Khairul also stressed that exceptions cannot be made on a case-by-case basis.</p>
<p>He explained that allowing one family to bypass the rule would likely result in similar requests from others, leading to accusations of unfair treatment.</p>
<p>With Rembayung often fully booked more than two weeks in advance and serving around 1,000 customers daily, consistent enforcement of SOPs is necessary to ensure smooth operations.</p>
<p>While acknowledging that some customers may disagree with the policy, Khairul apologised to anyone who felt inconvenienced and reiterated that the rule was introduced after careful consideration of real operational challenges.</p>
<p>Ultimately, he said the decision to count babies and children as one pax is not about profits, but about ensuring a safe, comfortable and fair dining experience for all customers.</p>
